What Is a Toner?

What Is a Toner?

With the advent of K-beauty, our view of toners have drastically changed. It’s applied immediately after cleansing the face, in turn, restoring the moisture that was washed away.

Toners have a water-like consistency, but, of course, it isn’t just water. It contains a lot more beneficial ingredients. Depending on the formula of the toner, they can take away remaining impurities, hydrate your skin, and restore your skin pH balance. Recent products have multi-tasking formulas to target various skin concerns.

Originally, toners were incorporated with astringents like alcohol to further remove the dirt from your face after using a facial wash. However, this does not hold true anymore

Its formulation has now evolved to cater more to nourishing and soothing the skin after cleansing. New generation toners can assist in removing dirt and may improve penetration of other skincare products.

Though toners are not necessarily needed in one's basic skincare routine, you may opt to add a toner based on the needs of your skin. For instance, if you feel that your usual routine doesn't provide the actives that your skin needs, you may include a toner. It can also add to your skin pampering.

How to Choose a Toner – Buying Guide

To find a great toner, you first need to understand what your skin needs. We have done the research and asked for comments from an expert to guide you on your next toner purchase!

Choose Based on Your Skin Type and Concerns

People can have similar skin types, but no one has the same skin. We all have our own skin concerns we’d like to deal with, so finding the right formula is important. Below, we’ll discuss which ingredients are best for each skin type.

Oily, Acne-Prone Skin: Sebum Regulators Like Salicylic Acid and Bentonite Clay

Oily, Acne-Prone Skin: Sebum Regulators Like Salicylic Acid and Bentonite Clay

Oily skin tends to come with other skin concerns like enlarged pores and acne, which are mainly caused by excess sebum production. To counteract this, look for toners that contain salicylic acid and as this regulates sebum production

Bentonite clay is another great ingredient because it can control shine and purify the skin, allowing your pores to breathe. Astringents, toners that contain alcohol, are also a good choice. They refine pores and prevent impurities from entering, so pimples can’t form.

Another ingredient that is said to be good for oily and acne-prone skin is witch hazel. However, it has gained mixed reviews - some say it worked wonders for their skin, while some say it caused an allergic reaction. To be on the safe side, you can consult your dermatologist before using a product with witch hazel.

For oily and acne-prone skin, opt for an exfoliating toner that may contain beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and polyhydroxy acids (PHAs).

BHA, such as Salicylic acid, are lipid-soluble and can penetrate deep into the pores. PHA, such as gluconolactone, resurfaces skin and can help other skincare ingredients penetrate deeper. An important note to remember when using exfoliating toners is to avoid over-exfoliating.

Dry Skin: Deeply Hydrating and Nourishing Ingredients Like Fermented Yeast and Amino Acids

Dry Skin: Deeply Hydrating and Nourishing Ingredients Like Fermented Yeast and Amino Acids
Dry skin can be dull and flaky. Dry skin needs deeply hydrating and nourishing ingredients like fermented yeast and amino acids. Pearl extract is an antioxidant that also brightens the complexion. If you have dull skin, toners that contain papaya extracts and lactic acid, which exfoliate, are also a good choice.

Most importantly, people with dry skin should avoid toners that contain alcohol, salicylic acid, and witch hazel, as these will dry and irritate the skin.

For dry skin that needs an extra boost of moisture, a hydrating toner is recommended. Ingredients to look for in a hydrating toner include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides - these ingredients increase skin moisture.

Combination Skin: pH Balancing Ingredients Like Glycolic Acid and Vitamin E

Combination Skin: pH Balancing Ingredients Like Glycolic Acid and Vitamin E

People with combination skin face various skin concerns. They can have both an oily T-zone area and dry patches elsewhere. Clogged pores and breakouts are also no strangers.

Harsh formulas can dry out the skin and potent ones can cause breakouts or irritations. Toners for combination skin should be able to balance out your skin by removing excess dirt and oil while hydrating it.

Combination Skin: pH Balancing Ingredients Like Glycolic Acid and Vitamin E

Natural acne-fighting ingredients and gentle exfoliants, such as willow bark, witch hazel, and gentle acids, are also perfect for combination skin since they’re effective without being too harsh.

For the dryer parts of the face, don’t just focus on moisturizing it. Acne-safe ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, and glycerin help restore the skin’s pH balance while smoothening and softening it. Vitamin E and glycolic acid are also other ingredients that can restore natural pH of the skin.

Skincare for combination skin is tricky since you'll need to balance out the needs of your skin. The oner best suited for combination skin must have a mixture of antioxidants and hydrating ingredients

Sensitive Skin: Skin-Calming Botanicals Like Calendula Extract and Chamomile

Sensitive Skin: Skin-Calming Botanicals Like Calendula Extract and Chamomile
Sensitive skin is easily irritated, so using toners the soothe and calm it is key. Ingredients like aloe vera and chamomile are just some examples of skin-calming botanicals. Calendula extract, which comes from the petals of marigolds, has been used for hundreds of years to treat redness, inflammation, or stressed skin.

Honey, a natural antibacterial, not only treats acne but also calms and moisturizes the skin. For sensitive and oily skin types, grapeseed oil is a godsend. It keeps the dry parts moisturized and keeps the oil at bay. Some natural ingredients to avoid are lavender and rose oil, which may irritate your skin.

For sensitive skin, opt for ingredients that are aimed at calming with the use of botanicals such as Centella Asiatica and cucumber extracts. Other ingredients that soothe sensitive skin include aloe vera and prebiotics. Choose a toner that is free from alcohol since this can irritate your sensitive skin.

Mature Skin: Exfoliating and Skin Renewing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids Like Glycolic and Citric Acid

Mature Skin: Exfoliating and Skin Renewing Alpha-Hydroxy Acids Like Glycolic and Citric Acid
Our skin’s regeneration process slows down as we age, so using products that exfoliate dead skin and stimulate skin renewal is important. We’ll need to buff away dead skin cells to reveal nice, glowing skin, and the perfect ingredient for the job are AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids).

AHAs are effective enough to remove dead skin cells, but gentle enough to be used daily. AHAs work mainly as an exfoliant. They allow the dead skin cells to come off, which then allows the regrowth of new skin.

It may also promote the production of collagen and elastin bringing back a youthful glow. Some examples of AHAs are lactic acid, malic acid, glycolic acid, and citric acid.

To slow down aging skin, opt for a toner with AHAs and antioxidants. AHAs such as Glycolic acid and Lactic acid are water-soluble. These help remove dead skin on the surface and can stimulate collagen production that can help prevent fine lines.

Another essential ingredient is antioxidants that include resveratrol, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea extract, and ferulic acid. Antioxidants renew and regenerate the skin.

Tips From Our Expert, Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang

Tips From Our Expert, Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang

Now it's time for some words of advice from our expert. Here are her tips on the proper application of toners, what to avoid, and what to do when you're unsure.

How Do You Properly Apply a Toner?

Dr. Jarische recommends simply patting the toner gently into your skin with your hands since using cotton pads may cause rubbing leading to unnecessary exfoliation.

She also adds that for first-time users, apply the toner twice a week first and monitor your skin's response. Gradually increasing the frequency of applying the toner is recommended to avoid sudden irritation on your skin.

What Should You Avoid?

Avoid toners with a high amount of denatured alcohol since this can irritate your skin further and can strip off the natural oils in your skin. This can then damage the skin barrier.

If You're Still Unsure...

Listen to what your skin needs to know which products you should include in your skincare routine. If you need guidance, it is best to seek help from your dermatologist.
