Here are some points to consider:
For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air, a technology that is most effective at trapping airborne particles, even PM 2.5. Its filter is made of very fine fiber-like material that has been folded in the shape of an accordion. This design creates a larger surface for the air to pass through.
PM 2.5 are atmospheric particulate matter (PM) that have a diameter smaller than 2.5 micrometers. That’s around 3% of the diameter of our hair. Since they are extremely small and light, they can penetrate deep into the lungs or circulatory system. Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 can aggravate or cause respiratory problems.
However, this filter does not remove odors, gases, or chemicals. An air purifier would need an activated carbon-based material in its setup to remove these. Since this type of air purifier uses a filter, you will need to replace it every few months or when the filter is full.
Similar to ionizers, electrostatic filters charge the particles in the air, but instead of just leaving them to stick anywhere, the machine collects them within the machine. The positively charged particles are released as the air continues through subsequent layers of the filter. Most models have a removable plate that you can wash and reuse. However, this produces ozone, so steer clear of this filter if you’re sensitive to it.
If you have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), we recommend this type of filter as it absorbs formaldehyde and perfumes from household cleaning items. It makes the air cleaner allowing babies, the elderly, and people with asthma to breathe comfortably.
If you want a machine to clean a room faster, then choose an air purifier with a larger coverage area than the said room. Of course, if you’re not after the speed, you can just choose a product that matches the size of your room.
If you like to leave your windows open, a model with a large air flow rate would be able to clean your air of dust and particles even after you’ve closed the window.
Some air purifiers have an odor sensor that constantly checks a room for unwanted odors and deodorizes it. If you smoke, have pets, or cook a lot with pungent ingredients, then you probably need this.
Another handy sensor that an air purifier can have is a dust sensor. If you’re allergic to dust, then this is perfect for your home or room. It detects the presence of dust and automatically filters the air for youーsome models can even detect PM 2.5, exhaust gas, and pollen!
There are also air purifiers that double as a dehumidifier or humidifier. The Philippines is hot and humid all year round, so to protect your things from getting bad, this could help a lot.
If you always find yourself turning on the AC then you might need a humidifier to bring back some moisture into the air. Dehumidifiers can also help dry your laundry indoor or on rainy days. Air purifiers with these functions can cost a lot, but they are worth the money.
Timers are quite convenient as you can turn on a machine without having to turn it off again by setting a timer. If you want to sleep with it turned on, but don’t want it running for the whole night, a timer function would be best for you. It is also more energy-efficient compared to leaving it turned on all day long.
There are some models where you can wash the filter, while others require you to replace them. When you wash your filter, soak it in baking soda and water and brush it well. Non-washable filters have a lifespan, so check the box or manual for instructions and replace them accordingly.
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about air purifiers that are answered by mybest team.
Yes, air purifiers can effectively eliminate pollutants and other gasses inside your home, but this will depend on the air purifier that you choose. A good quality air purifier can improve the air quality, which can also lead to an improved quality of life.
Air purifiers work best when they are placed where the concentration of most pollutants is high. They work effectively where there is high airflow, such as near the doorway or near a window, allowing them to pull air from all directions.
You can use your air purifiers at any time of the day. If possible, it is best to keep your air purifier running 24 hours a dayーthis way you are sure that the air you breathe is free from pollutants. However, do remember to always clean and maintain the filters.
The Philippine heat could be very unbearable at times but don't let that get in your way! Check out some of our other buying guide and recommendations for the best items to pair with your air purifier to keep your cool on.
Clean and breathable air is definitely something we’d all want for our homes. One way to ensure that is by having an air purifier. With the availability of a lot of models from different brands with different features or functions available, we hope you’ve found our buying guide and list helpful for your air purifier purchase or upgrade!
