We’ve prepared this article to make sure you know you’re getting your money’s worth–whether you get one from Samsonite, Delsey, or American Tourister. We’ve also prepared a list of the best ones you can find online.
How to Choose a Luggage in the Philippines – Buying Guide
Going on a trip? Let’s find out which luggage is the best.
If You’re Carrying Fragile Equipment, Get a Hard-Shell Luggage
Hard-shell luggage is either made of polycarbonate or polypropylene, while a soft-shell one can be made out of leather, nylon, polyester, or other fabrics. This is the first choice you have to make when choosing luggage.
Hard-shell luggage is advantageous because they can protect whatever you place inside it, making it suitable for carrying fragile items. They’re also more difficult to break into. Soft-shell luggage, on the other hand, are lighter and are easier to open and close. It’s also easier to stuff things into them as the outer shell is softer.
Things to Consider if You’ve Decided on a Hard-Shell Luggage
So once you’ve decided which kind of luggage to get, let’s breakdown the details.
For Ones with a Metal Frame Closure, Check Its Thickness and Depth
When choosing a hard-shell luggage with a metal frame closure, look at how thick its frame is and how deep the groove in the middle is. The deeper the groove, the stronger it will be against external pressure, so look for ones that have grooves that are around 10mm deep.
Hard-shell luggage is known for being heavier and that’s why manufacturers have been releasing cheaper and lighter models. But be careful when buying these as their metal frame is usually flimsier and the groove not as deep.
For Ones with a Zip Closure, Check the Zipper’s Thickness
If you prefer a hard-shell luggage with a zip closure, then check its thickness and how sturdy it is. These are lighter and easier to open and close than those with metal frames, so they’re a popular choice. But depending on the quality of the zipper, it could easily fall apart if it gets snagged on something.
Cheap luggage usually has zippers that are as thin as those used in handbags which make them prone to breaking. We recommend looking for good quality zippers made by YKK or the like. You can also look for luggage that are made with double coil zippers which are more durable.
When Choosing a Soft-Shell Luggage, Check Its Fabric
When choosing a soft-shell luggage, the first thing you should check is the type of fabric it uses. It should be strong and sturdy–enough to withstand constant external force and friction.
For example, a luggage should be constructed with nylon fabric of at least 400 denier. Denier is the measurement used to measure the thickness of certain fabrics.
You can also find luggage that is water-resistant, water-repellant, or waterproof. Waterproof ones being completely impenetrable by water. Don’t just check the body of the luggage though, make sure that the fabric around the zipper is also water-resistant.
Of course, you could always buy a waterproof luggage cover to keep your things safe from the rain or accidental spillages.
Choose a Luggage Size by How Much You Need to Pack
The next step is to choose the size of your luggage, so check out the points below.
Choose a Luggage Capacity According to How Long Your Trip is
Generally, you’ll see luggage in the sizes S, M, L, etc., but its actual capacity is measured in liters. Depending on the brand or model, luggage indicated as the same size can have slightly different capacities, so we recommend referring to its capacity.
It will also depend on how much stuff you need to pack, but generally, 30-49L is good for a 2-3 night trip, 50-59L for 3-5 nights, 60-89L for 5-7 nights, and 90L for 10 days or longer.
However, you also need to take into account how much weight you can carry, especially if you’ll be traveling alone. If you don’t think you’ll be able to lift heavy luggage, then go for ones that have a 50-60L capacity or lower.
If You Travel a Lot by Plane, Take Note of Airline Baggage Allowance
If you want to avoid any unnecessary charges or fees, then make sure your luggage isn’t bigger than the maximum size allowed by an airline or aircraft. Baggage allowance will also depend on how big the aircraft is and your destination.
For example, Philippine Airlines checked baggage policy states that your luggage’s width, height, and length must be no bigger than 62in or 158cm. Weight limits will depend on your destination.
On the other hand, if you plan on bringing it with you into the cabin, size restrictions will differ. Its dimensions must be no bigger than 45in or 115cm, and it must not weight more than 15lbs or 7kg. You can usually find luggage labeled as “cabin-size,” so you won’t need to check their measurements.
Choose Between a 4-Wheeled or 2-Wheeled Luggage Based on Your Purpose
Luggage can either have 2 wheels or 4 wheels and depending on what you’re using your luggage for one might be better than the other one.
For Heavy Packers, Get a Luggage with 4 Wheels
A luggage that weighs more than 10kg will need more support at its base while you transport it, so choosing a 4-wheeled luggage is recommended. This way both your arm and the wheels are experiencing less pressure. Your arm won’t get as fatigued and your luggage wheels won’t fall apart as easily.
But of course, it also has its weaknesses. If you plan on traveling to places with rugged terrain or rough paths, this won’t be the best option. It’s also relatively noisier than 2-wheeled ones.
For Light Packers, Get a Luggage with 2-Wheels
If you don’t plan on bringing a lot of stuff with you then a 2-wheel luggage would be sufficient. It can travel more smoothly on rough paths, plus it won’t be as noisy. It can also stand upright by itself–without rolling away from you.
Check for Other Convenient Features
Some luggage also include extra features like laptop compartments and expandable bodies.
Do You Travel with Your Laptop or Tablet? Get a Carry-On Bag with a Gadget Compartment
If you travel with your laptop or tablet, look for carry-on luggage with a laptop or gadget compartment. You don’t want to be carrying around a heavy bag on your shoulders for the whole trip, right?
Also, anything battery-powered isn’t allowed in your check-in luggage, so don’t get anything larger than a cabin size luggage if you plan on traveling by plane.
When Choosing a Luggage with a Zip Closure, Make Sure It’s Expandable
Going on a trip usually involves bringing back souvenirs or pasalubong, so to make sure you have space for that, get a luggage that’s expandable. You’ll find that some luggages have an extra zipper that gives you extra space. It’s a convenient feature that could save you a headache.
