Why Use Sunscreen on Your Face?

Why Use Sunscreen on Your Face?

As we've said before, protecting the skin from the sun is of utmost importance. The ultraviolet rays of the sun damage the skin in many ways.

Aside from protecting your skin from being sunburnt, sunscreen also protects your skin from ultraviolet rays which can help speed up the aging process of your skin and damage it deep within the skin making it more prone to sun-related illnesses such as skin cancer.

How to Choose a Facial Sunscreen to Buy Online - Buying Guide

Choosing any product for the face requires thorough research. What should you look for in a sunscreen? Does it match your skin type? What ingredients may harm your skin?

Our guide below will help you narrow down your choices. Now choosing a sunscreen that is perfect for you is made easier. Keep on reading to find out more!

Make Sure Your Sunscreen has a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Make Sure Your Sunscreen has a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Broad-spectrum in sunscreen means that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays of the sun. UVA rays aid to the darkening of existing pigment and aging of the skin (wrinkles and dark spots) while UVB rays aid to the burning of the skin and melanin production (darkening and sunburn).

Choose an SPF or “Sun Protection Factor” rating depending on your skin and sun-protection needs. It is recommended to use an SPF of 30 for daily use. For prolonged sun exposure, go for the highest possible SPF rating.

PA is the Japanese measuring system for protection against UVA rays. More plus signs mean better protection against UVA rays. Although many products are marketed as “broad-spectrum”, not all of them give enough protection against UVA rays.

Choose Between Mineral or Chemical Sunscreens

Sunscreens can be classified as mineral or chemical depending on the ingredients in the formula. Both have their pros and cons. Understanding the difference between these two can make it easier for you to choose a sunscreen well-suited for your face.

Mineral Sunscreens: Best for Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin

Mineral Sunscreens: Best for Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin
Mineral sunscreens are also called “physical sunscreens” because they physically block and reflect the harmful rays. These are made of zinc oxide alone or in combination with titanium dioxide. Both ingredients occur naturally but can be made synthetically, as well.

This type of sunscreen sits on top of the skin so it is relatively safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin types. Mineral sunscreens form an immediate protective barrier over the skin so there is no waiting time needed before sun exposure.

One downside of mineral sunscreens is that they tend to leave a white cast. However, newer formulations are made with smaller particles so you can easily rub it into your skin with a minimal white cast

Chemical Sunscreens: Best for Sports and Wearing With Makeup

Chemical Sunscreens: Best for Sports and Wearing With Makeup
Chemical sunscreens include ingredients such as avobenzone, Tinosorb S, or any other ingredients that are not zinc oxide or titanium oxide exclusively. These contain a variety of filters to filter out the different wavelengths of ultraviolet light.

Chemical sunscreens contain compounds that help absorb UV rays and turn it to energy or heat to prevent it from penetrating the skin barrier. Chemical sunscreens layer well with makeup as it allows for a more weightless application and seldom leaves a white cast, but since these fully absorb into the skin, they may irritate the skin.

Chemical sunscreens are also great to use when swimming or doing sports if you want something that’s water or sweat-resistant. When applied, you need to wait at least 20 minutes before going outdoors to allow the sunscreen to form a film on the surface of the skin to protect from ultraviolet light.

Consider Your Skin Type

Consider Your Skin Type
Many sunscreens are formulated to help dry, oily, or sensitive skin. For normal to dry skin, look for cream sunscreen to help moisturize the skin. It also helps if you choose a sunscreen with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid which attracts moisture from the environment.

For oily and combination skin types, choose lotions or gel-based sunscreens as these tend to be more lightweight and does not feel too heavy on the skin. Look for the “non-comedogenic” label and go oil-free to prevent pores from clogging.

For sensitive and acne-prone skin, go with fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options with zinc oxide as its main ingredient. Also, avoid alcohol and preservative ingredients.

Know Which Ingredients to Avoid

Know Which Ingredients to Avoid
Some ingredients found in chemical or combination sunscreens are found to be harmful to the body. Be sure to read the ingredients list and avoid these ingredients:

  • Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) can be a serious irritant, cause allergic reactions, and hormone disruptions. On top of that, it has been shown to cause harm to coral reefs.
  • Octinoxate like oxybenzone, this has also been shown to cause harm to coral reefs. It can cause skin allergies and in animal studies, octinoxate had effects on the reproductive system and thyroid.
  • Retinyl Palmitate A form of vitamin A, which is a powerful antioxidant. However, when exposed to sunlight, UV rays cause the compound to breakdown and form destructive free radicals on the skin that can cause cell death.
  • Avobenzone by itself is relatively safe in terms of toxicity but degrades within 30 minutes so it is usually paired with other harmful chemical substances to stabilize it.

Tips on When and How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

Tips on When and How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

With all the skincare products out there, it's hard enough to choose which products to use-you also have to figure out the order of application. Here are some of our tips to help you with your skincare journey.

Wash Your face Gently With a Mild Cleanser

Wash Your face Gently With a Mild Cleanser

The first step in every skincare routine is washing the face. We recommend washing with a mild cleanser so you do not strip your skin of moisture. You can use a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm before washing your face with a face wash to remove any makeup or excess dirt

We recommend only washing the skin twice a day (morning and night). Washing your skin too much will cause dryness. For those with dry skin, you can skip washing your face in the morning, simply rinsing it with water would be enough.

Toners, serums, and essences are optional steps to add to your routine, but the face wash-moisturizer-SPF trio is a good enough system.

Use a Moisturizer After Washing the Face

Use a Moisturizer After Washing the Face

After washing the face, immediately apply a moisturizer or a lotion to prevent the skin from drying. Look for hydrating ingredients that deliver water directly to your cells, like hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, glycerine, and aloe.

For those with dry skin, opt for moisturizers with thicker consistencies like creams or ointments. Gels and milky lotions are recommended for people with oily skin. For Sensitive and acne-prone skin, go for a moisturizer that is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic.

For Optimal Skin Protection, Reapply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

For Optimal Skin Protection, Reapply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

The very last step of your skincare routine should be SPF! Some products like serums can be left optional but sunscreen is a must. Dermatologists recommend 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon as the right amount of sunscreen for the face and neck. After applying sunscreen, you can start applying your makeup as you would normally.

Do not forget to put sunscreen on the outside of your ears, too, since the ears are a high-risk area for skin cancer. When using a chemical or combination sunscreen, be sure to wait at least twenty minutes before going out and exposing your skin to the sun.

Reapply your sunscreen every two to four hours especially when you're going to be out in the sun for a long time. You don't have to apply sunscreen when you do your nighttime skincare routine.
