How to Choose a Facial Sunscreen - Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Make sure your sunscreen has broad-spectrum protection.
  2. Choose between mineral and chemical sunscreens.
  3. Consider your skin type.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

① Make Sure Your Sunscreen Has Broad-Spectrum Protection

Make Sure Your Sunscreen Has Broad-Spectrum Protection

Broad-spectrum means that it protects from both UVA and UVB rays of the sun. UVA rays aid in the darkening of existing pigment and aging of the skin (wrinkles and dark spots), while UVB rays aid in the burning of the skin and melanin production (darkening and sunburn). Choose an SPF or “Sun Protection Factor” rating depending on your skin and sun protection needs.

It is recommended to use an SPF of 30 for daily use. For prolonged sun exposure, go for the highest possible SPF rating. PA is the Japanese measuring system for protection against UVA rays. More plus signs mean better protection against UVA rays.

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

SPF measures the protection against UVB rays associated with skin burning. Sunscreens must have at least SPF 30 to be considered ample protection. PA is the protection against UVA associated with photodamage and pigmentation.

② Choose Between Mineral and Chemical Sunscreens

Sunscreens can be classified as mineral or chemical depending on the ingredients in the formula. Both have their pros and cons. Understanding the difference between these two can make it easier for you to choose a sunscreen well-suited for your face.

Mineral Sunscreens: Best for Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin

Mineral Sunscreens: Best for Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin
Mineral sunscreens are also called “physical sunscreens” because they physically block and reflect the harmful rays. These are made of zinc oxide alone or in combination with titanium dioxide. This type of sunscreen sits on top of the skin so it is relatively safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin types

Mineral sunscreens form an immediate protective barrier over the skin so there is no waiting time needed before sun exposure. One downside of mineral sunscreens is that they tend to leave a white cast. However, newer formulations are made with smaller particles so you can easily rub it into your skin with a minimal white cast

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

Mineral sunscreens are also known as physical or inorganic sunscreens. This is preferred to people with sensitive skin type because it only contains mineral oxides that have less potential to cause irritation

Chemical Sunscreens: Best for Sports and Wearing With Makeup

Chemical Sunscreens: Best for Sports and Wearing With Makeup
Chemical sunscreens contain compounds that help absorb UV rays and turn them into energy or heat to prevent them from penetrating the skin barrier. When applied, you need to wait at least 20 minutes before going outdoors to allow the sunscreen to form a film on the surface of the skin to protect from ultraviolet light.

Chemical sunscreens layer well with makeup as it allows for a more weightless application and seldom leaves a white cast, but since these fully absorb into the skin, they may irritate the skin. Chemical sunscreens are also great to use when swimming or doing sports if you want something that’s water- or sweat-resistant

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

Chemical sunscreens are also known as organic sunscreens. Some UV filters found in this type of sunscreen have the potential to cause irritation.

③ Consider Your Skin Type

Consider Your Skin Type
Many sunscreens are formulated to help dry, oily, or sensitive skin. For normal to dry skin, look for cream sunscreens to help moisturize the skin, like hyaluronic acid, which attracts moisture from the environment. For oily and combination skin types, choose lotions or gel-based sunscreens as these tend to be more lightweight and do not feel too heavy on the skin

Look for the “non-comedogenic” label on sunscreens and go oil-free to prevent pores from clogging. For sensitive and acne-prone skin, go with fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options with zinc oxide as its main ingredient. Also, avoid alcohol and preservative ingredients.

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

In choosing a sunscreen, the skin type matters on which formulation is suitable. Note that the weather may also play a factor in choosing, especially in a tropical country like here the Philippines. For instance, during summertime, people may opt for a lightweight gel-based formulation to avoid the heaviness and sticky sensation of a cream-based formulation.

  • For oily and acne-prone skin, a lightweight gel-based formula is recommended.
  • For sensitive skin, try to avoid fragrance or preservatives if you have a known reaction to these. Also, it is best for them to avoid UV filters formulated in chemical sunscreens.
  • For dry skin, any type of sunscreen is tolerated, yet cream type formulation can provide more moisturization.

Tips on When and How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

With all the skincare products out there, it's hard enough to choose which products to use-you also have to figure out the order of application. Here are some of our tips to help you with your skincare journey.

Wash Your Face Gently With a Mild Cleanser

Wash Your Face Gently With a Mild Cleanser

The first step in every skincare routine is washing the face. We recommend washing with a mild cleanser, so you do not strip your skin of moisture. You can use a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm before washing your face with a face wash to remove any makeup or excess dirt. We recommend only washing the skin twice a day (morning and night).

Washing your skin too much will cause dryness. For those with dry skin, you can skip washing your face in the morning; simply rinsing it with water would be enough. Toners, serums, and essences are optional steps to add to your routine, but the face wash-moisturizer-SPF trio is a good enough system.

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

In the morning, I usually recommend washing the face if you have applied treatments or actives during your nighttime skincare routine. This can help prepare your skin for better penetration of the skincare products that are part of your morning routine.

Don't overwash your face as well, limit it to twice a day since you need to have a balance of natural oils on your skin. Overwashing can damage your skin barrier, leading to irritation.

Use a Moisturizer After Washing the Face

Use a Moisturizer After Washing the Face

After washing the face, immediately apply a moisturizer or a lotion to prevent the skin from drying. Look for hydrating ingredients that deliver water directly to your cells, like hyaluronic acid, propylene glycol, glycerine, and aloe.

For those with dry skin, opt for moisturizers with thicker consistencies like creams or ointments. Gels and milky lotions are recommended for people with oily skin. For sensitive and acne-prone skin, go for a moisturizer that is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic.

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment

After washing the face, applying moisturizers is the usual next step unless you're applying toners, serums, essences, or treatments (which are all dependent on the needs of your skin).

For Optimal Skin Protection, Reapply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

For Optimal Skin Protection, Reapply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

The very last step of your skincare routine should be SPF! Dermatologists recommend 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon as the right amount of sunscreen for the face and neck. After applying sunscreen, you can start applying your makeup as you would normally. When using a chemical or combination sunscreen, be sure to wait at least twenty minutes before going out and exposing your skin to the sun.

Do not forget to put sunscreen on the outside of your ears, too, since the ears are a high-risk area for skin cancer. Reapply your sunscreen every two to four hours, especially when you're going to be out in the sun for a long time. You don't have to apply sunscreen when you do your nighttime skincare routine.

Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang
Dermatologist
Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang's Comment
Sunscreen is usually the last step in the morning skincare routine before putting on makeup. Also, there's a misconception that sunscreen is not needed when it's overcast or gloomy. Sunscreen must be applied daily all year round. When staying indoors, sunscreen must be applied as well because the UV rays can penetrate the glass window.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang

We also asked Dr. Jarische Lao-Ang for some of her tips to better take care of your skin. Continue reading to find out more!

Do Children Need Sunscreen, Too?

Sunscreen is approved for children aged 6 months and above. For kids younger than 6 months, sun protection can be achieved by wearing UV-protective clothing such as hats, long-sleeved top, and pants.

Can You Skip Sunscreen if the Makeup Has SPF Already?

The answer is no. You can not skip your sunscreen because the SPF found in makeup doesn't offer enough protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Also, the face is not the only part that must be covered. You should also include your eyelids, neck, decolletage, and ears. When reapplying sunscreen, there's no need to wash your face before reapplying. Note that washing your face twice a day is enough, as previously mentioned.

Why Use Sunscreen on Your Face?

When we talk about photodamage, it involves UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates deeper into the dermis and is mainly responsible for skin aging. UVB reaches the epidermis (topmost layer of skin) and is called the sunburn rays, primarily causing hyperpigmentation. Aside from pigmentation and skin aging, frequent unprotected sun exposure leads to skin cancer.
