How to Choose a Window-Type Air Conditioner – Buying Guide

There are various brands in the market today that offer tons of features that could attract consumers. But one cannot buy a product solely by its features alone. There should be standard elements that must be looked into before purchasing one.

Multiply the Area of the Room By 500 to Get the Cooling Capacity Needed

Multiply the Area of the Room By 500 to Get the Cooling Capacity Needed

The most crucial decision to be made when purchasing an air conditioner is choosing the right size, which ultimately means looking at the cooling capacity. The size of the air conditioner should depend on the area where you intend to use it. This way, you can fully utilize the capacity of the AC unit.

Installing a size that’s too small for a large room will be inadequate to cool the whole area by itself, while one that’s too large can easily cool the room instantly but it’s not cost-efficient. The bigger the unit is, the more energy it uses.

The AC unit’s capacity is measured in kJ/hr (kilojoules/hour) or BTU (British Thermal Unit). To get the rough estimate of the air conditioner’s size, you need to multiply the size of the room (in sq. meter) by 500. For example, if your room size is 25 square meters, you will need an aircon with a 12,500 kJ/hr capacity.

Registered Mechanical Engineer
Marvin D. Garcia

When we say aircon size, this is not the actual physical size or dimension of the AC; rather, it is the cooling capacity of the unit. The main function of AC is to cool the room and remove the humidity for us to become comfortable. An AC unit that's too small or too large can lead to inefficient cooling, uncomfortable feeling, higher electricity bill, and sudden breakdown of the unit.

Consider Other Heat Load Factors to Know if You Need Higher Cooling Capacity

Consider Other Heat Load Factors to Know if You Need Higher Cooling Capacity

Aside from the floor area, heat load factors or factors such as climate and room occupants should also be taken into consideration. Direct sunlight could significantly decrease the room temperature, so it's better to add at least 10% to the cooling capacity.

Also, if more than two persons are occupying the room at any given time, there should be an additional kJ/hr of 633 per added occupant. The Philippines generally has a warmer climate, so a higher kJ/hr is needed.

Some AC units in the market already have a label recommending room area application, however, take note that the floor area is not enough when choosing the size of the aircon. There are other heat load factors to consider, such as the number of persons and the activity in the room, the orientation of the room and its exposure to sunlight, and also the appliances being used.

Go for a Unit With a Higher EER for a Lower Energy Bill

Go for a Unit With a Higher EER for a Lower Energy Bill

Two factors should be examined before buying an air conditioning unit –- the cost of the unit and the cost of using the unit or the electric bill. The electric bill is defined by the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, the duration and regularity of use, and the unit’s Energy Efficiency Ratio. Having a higher EER means lower power consumption.

The Department of Energy (DOE) states that the standard EER for window-type aircon with cooling capacity below 12,000 kJ/h is 8.3, while the units with cooling capacity above 12,000 kJ/h should meet the minimum standard of 7.8. When buying in stores, you may look at the yellow tag the unit comes with to see the EER or check the list provided by the DOE on their website.

Marvin D. Garcia
Registered Mechanical Engineer
Marvin D. Garcia

Studies show that using an aircon could account, at a maximum, an additional 50% on your electricity bill. This is why you must also consider getting an aircon unit that is energy efficient and will give you savings!

A quick way to know whether the aircon you will buy is energy efficient is by looking at the EER or the yellow tag displayed along with the unit. The higher the EER means the lower the electricity cost. Having an AC with more than 12 EER is an economical choice. The yellow tag is also an indication that the aircon unit passed the Department of Energy's (DOE) Minimum Energy Performance Standard.

Check the Features That You Need Like Temperature Control, Timer, Purifier, and More

Check the Features That You Need Like Temperature Control, Timer, Purifier, and More

The ability to control or adjust the temperature is a great feature to maintain the efficiency of the unit, whether on electronic or manual control. A timer and sleep mode settings could determine the specific length of usage, while some have energy-saving or auto-restart modes, thereby saving cost and energy.

Air direction and airflow control help distribute cooler air within the room, so it's important to recognize this option.

Some models have purifiers to filter out dust and other particles to purify the air inside the room, which also eliminates bad odors. More advanced air conditioners use newer technologies such as an inverter motor which could save up to 30-50% of energy consumption, ergo cutting the cost of the electric bill.

With the ever-evolving technology, newer and newer features are constantly being added to airconditioners. Remember that the more features there are, the more expensive the unit will be. So when choosing, I suggest that you consider only those you deem useful for you and your family.

One of the features you shouldn't miss out on is energy-saving, this may differ per brand but most people now prefer getting inverter air conditioners. This is especially useful if you use the aircon for more than 8 hours a day. Not only are you able to use the AC's full potential for longer periods of time, but this can cut energy consumption, too!

For Peaceful Sleep Go for Units With 50dB Noise Level or Lower

For Peaceful Sleep Go for Units With 50dB Noise Level or Lower

If you’re a light sleeper, look for a unit that runs quietly, even on a higher cooling level. Most models indicate their noise levels in decibels (dB) within their specifications list. Generally, airconditioners' noise levels range from 50-55 dB, but there are now units that offer lower noise levels.

You must go with the lowest dB as possible. It's normal to have minimal noise when the unit is first turned on and gradually lessens when the motor has already reached its normal running state. The sound and vibration usually come from the compressor, the water produced at heat exchangers, and the blower.

Registered Mechanical Engineer

Because the compressor of a window-type aircon is also attached to the unit, window-type aircons are noisier compared to split-type ones. When choosing, it is best to select one with a low noise level (measured in decibels) or you can also opt for an inverter window-type AC because it has a smoother and quieter operation that can give you a peaceful rest. Another thing you can do is to install the AC away from your bed.

DIY Window-Type Aircon Cleaning

The video above from Carrier, one of the leading and trusted brands for air conditioners, demonstrates how you can clean a window-type AC on your own. No need to call maintenance or repair guys!

Things you need:

  • Medium-sized basin with water
  • Soft cloth
  • Vacuum

Steps:

  1. Make sure that the unit is turned off and it is unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Press the metal casing and remove the front grille.
  3. Pull out the air filter. If special air filters are included, take them out as well.
  4. Soak the main filter in water for 5-10 minutes. Lightly shake the main filter to remove excess water.
  5. Place the main filter on a dry soft cloth and let dry.
  6. Clean the AC unit’s fin with a vacuum cleaner. Make sure that the nozzle of the vacuum doesn't touch the fins to avoid damage.
  7. Using a soft, dry cloth, clean the front grille. Place back main filter (and special filters, if any). Place back front grille, plug the AC, and you are good to go!

Simple and DIY cleaning, even just for the air filter, could be of great benefit! Cleaning the air filter can improve the air quality because you are removing the pollutants trapped in the filter. This will also save you money in the long run!

Cleaning of the filter can be done weekly. You can also check the unit's manual for some guides that may help you in doing DIY cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Engr. Marvin D. Garcia

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Engr. Marvin D. Garcia

Purchasing an AC unit is one thing. But we're sure that aside from which brand to buy or what unit is best, you've also got some other questions in mind! Below, Engr. Marvin answers some of the most asked questions about window-type aircons.

How Often Should I Clean My Window Type Aircon?

To help improve the performance and efficiency of the air conditioner, cleaning is a must. For households or residential air conditioners, ideally, you should schedule total cleaning or cleaning of the whole unit twice a year (every 6 months) or once a year. The frequency may change depending on the usage, application, and location of the AC.

Is It Okay for Window Type Aircon to Get Wet?

When cleaning the AC, getting it wet sometimes cannot be avoided. However, you have to make sure that you cover the electrical components so they won't be exposed to water.

During heavy rain, we want to avoid getting it flooded (deep standing water) as it can damage moving parts and electrical components. If this happens, immediately remove or drain the water, then call an AC technician to check the unit before you restart it.

What Are the Things to Consider When Installing a Window Type Aircon?

First and foremost, proper location and setup should be considered for the installation of a window-type aircon. For maintenance or cleaning purposes, install it in the place where it is accessible. There are times that the AC might leak due to the accumulation of water, so try to free it from any possible obstruction.

You must also check the outside condition. As much as possible, avoid installing it where there is significant and long exposure to the sun, as this will lessen its efficiency during peak hours. If not possible, you can put some roof or canopy for protection. Remember to avoid obstructing and restricting the flow of air on the condenser side of the unit.

More Tips from Engr. Marvin D. Garcia

You can expect a good air conditioner to last up to 10 years under normal running conditions. This is why you have to consider it as a long-term investment for your comfort. More and more ACs with newer features are released, so it isn't enough to rely only on advertisements, sales agents, and hearsay.

Before purchasing one, ask yourself what requirements and features you need. Of course, you should also consider your budget and its long-term cost. Doing some research won't hurt, too! This way, before you go to a store or purchasing online, you are sure that you will get the satisfaction you want.

How We Chose and Ranked Our Product Recommendations

Now that you've seen our buying guide and our top 10 list, you might be wondering how the products ended up in our recommendations and how we ranked the top 3.

The mybest team of writers and editors carefully researched the buying guide, so we used some of the headings as a basis for the list. For the top 3, we also looked at ratings and reviews from Lazada in addition to the buying guide. If you want to know more details, read on below!

Reviews and Ratings

For each product on the top 3, we looked at and referenced more than 100 reviews, as well as product ratings in Lazada.

Check the Cooling Capacity and Floor Area to Get the Right Size

The cooling capacity the buyer should get should depend on the area intended to be cooled, so we did not give a rating based on this factor.

Consider Other Heat Load Factors

Since the cooling capacity will also be affected by other factors that would depend on each household, we did not include this part of the buying guide in the rating as well.

Go for a Unit With a Higher EER

We looked at each product's specifications and gave a higher rating to those with higher EER ratings since a higher EER means that the unit is more energy-efficient. We also gave a lower rating to those that only meet or fall below the minimum requirement of the DOE or Department of Energy.

Check the Features That You Need

More helpful features bring more convenience to the users, so if the product has most or all of the features we listed in the buying guide, we gave it a higher rating.

For Peaceful Sleep Go for Units With At Least 50dB Noise Level

We all want peaceful sleep and rest. In order to get that, you'll need a trusty air conditioner that will not disturb your deep sleep. We looked at each product's specifications list and rated them higher if they have a lower decibel level.
