Purchasing an air conditioner could be the best solution in times like this and choosing one might be a tough decision for the uninformed.

We will focus on a specific kind of air conditioning unit that is easy to install and relatively cheaper than other types – the window-type air conditioner. How to Choose a Window-Type Air Conditioner – Buying Guide

There are various brands in the market today that offer tons of features that could attract consumers. But one cannot buy a product solely by its features alone. There should be standard elements that must be looked into before purchasing one.

Pick the Right Air Conditioner Size

Pick the Right Air Conditioner Size

The size of the air conditioner should depend on the area where you intend to use it. This is the most crucial decision to be made to fully utilize the capacity of an air conditioner. Installing a size too small for a room will be inadequate to cool the whole area by itself.

And, selecting a unit too large can easily cool the room instantly but it's not cost-efficient since the bigger the unit is, the more energy it uses. A large air conditioner in a small room will only create humidity in the air and would be uncomfortable.

How to Compute for the Right Size of the Unit Needed

How to Compute for the Right Size of the Unit Needed

To know the right size of the air conditioner, simply multiply the length times the width of the room or area to be cooled. Then, as a practical number, multiply that total by 25 BTU, which is the ample cooling norm.

For example, the room is 12 feet wide by 15 feet long. That means 12x15=180 square feet. Take 180 sq. ft. multiplied by 25 BTU per square foot and you get the minimum BTU air conditioner you should buy. That means 180 x 25 = 4500 BTU cooling capacity is needed.

BTU is an acronym which stands for British Thermal Unit. It’s a form of measurement that gauges energy. One BTU refers to the number of energy needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by 1°F. It is most commonly used when talking about heating and air conditioning units. On the other hand, you could search for BTU tables available online for easy reference or ask your local AC supplier.

How to Compute for the Right Size of the Unit Needed

Other factors such as climate and room occupants should also be taken into consideration. Direct sunlight could significantly decrease the room temperature so it's better to add at least 10% on the cooling capacity.

Also, if more than two persons are occupying the room at any given time there should be an additional BTU of 600 per added occupant. The Philippines generally have a warmer climate so a higher BTU is needed.

Take a Look at the Efficiency Rating of the Unit

Take a Look at the Efficiency Rating of the Unit

Two values should be examined before buying an air conditioning unit –- the cost of the unit and the cost of using the unit or the electric bill. The electric bill is defined by the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, the duration and regularity of use, and the unit’s Energy Efficiency Ratio, having a higher EER means lower power consumption. For every point in EER, you can save 10% of the electricity cost.

Air conditioners manufactured after October 2000 should have at least a 9.7 EER. To get the yellow Energy Star label, the unit must have a 10.7 EER. We often see the EER on a yellow paper attached in front of an appliance being displayed at showrooms and appliance stores.

Check the Features That You Need

Check the Features That You Need

The ability to control or adjust the temperature is a great feature to maintain the efficiency of the unit, whether on electronic or manual control. A timer and sleep mode settings could determine the specific length of usage, while some have an energy-saving or auto-restart modes, thereby saving cost and energy.

Air direction and airflow control help distribute cooler air within the room so it's important to recognize this option.

Some models have purifiers to filter out dust and other particles to purify the air inside the room which also eliminates bad odors. More advanced air conditioners use newer technologies such as an inverter motor which could save up to 30-50% of energy consumption ergo cutting the cost of the electric bill.

Know the Noise Level of the Air Conditioner

Know the Noise Level of the Air Conditioner

If you’re a light sleeper, look for a unit that runs quietly even on a higher cooling level. Most models indicate their noise levels in decibels (dB) within their specifications list. Generally, airconditioners noise level range from 50-55 dB but there are now units that offer lower noise levels.

You must go with the lowest dB as possible. It's normal to have minimal noise when the unit is first turned on and gradually lessens when the motor has already reached its normal running state. The sound and vibration usually come from the compressor, the water produced at heat exchangers, and the blower.
