Baby wipes play a huge role in you and your baby's daily cleaning routine. To choose the best wipe, you need to consider its type for you and your baby's needs according to its use.
Wet wipes are moistened soft cloth that is formulated with a combination of ingredients to help and protect your baby's skin from rashes and irritation.
These are helpful when changing your baby's diaper as the wetness can cleanse thoroughly just with a few wipes. These are convenient and are the perfect partners when traveling, especially when your baby needs quick cleaning, and there's no water source nearby.
Baby wipes are essential when caring for infants, toddlers, or pre-schoolers. Wipes are useful for cleaning the diaper area and also convenient for wiping soiled faces and hands after eating. However, there are so many options in the market, and choosing a particular brand for your child can be challenging.
Dry wipes are dry cotton sheets and are recommended for babies with very sensitive skin as it does not have chemicals and other ingredients on it. They are just purely cotton sheets.
These are ideal for regular use because you can rest assured that they are very safe to use. However, you might need to wet them with clean water if you need to use it for intense cleansing.
Consider the texture and thickness of the wipes. Is it soft, smooth, scratchy, or abrasive? Thick or thin? Choose smooth and thick wipes. Smoother wipes mean less friction and less irritation, especially for babies with sensitive skin. Thicker ones are sturdier and will help you effectively clean your baby’s diaper area using fewer wipes.
Choosing between reusable and disposable wipes will not just affect your baby's skin but also the environment. Both work well, but have their pros and cons. Read more to find out.
Reusable wipes are also known as cloth wipes. These are offered in the market with a higher price than disposable baby wipes, but they will surely cost you less in the long run, as you can wash and reuse them.
You can also be productive by not buying it from the market and just upcycle clean old towels or washcloths. These are perfect for babies who have very sensitive skin as they are pure and do not contain any ingredients. Cloth wipes should have a smooth and soft texture to prevent skin irritation.
Reusable wipes are more cost-effective in the long run but make sure to launder properly. Wash separately from other laundry and soak in an antibacterial detergent before washing. Rinse well, making sure there is no residual soap and dry in the sun or the dryer at a high heat setting.
Disposable wipes are more hygienic because used sheets are immediately thrown away after use and new clean sheets are used for the next use. These usually contain natural extracts and other safe ingredients so they are safe to use on babies.
However, disposable wipes create a lot of waste and have been known to pollute the ocean and sewage lines, so be mindful when buying these. Make sure to pick biodegradable ones. These break down naturally, so it does less harm to the environment once disposed of.
When cleaning stool on the diaper area, use disposable wipes and make sure to clean from front to back to avoid urinary tract infections, especially in female babies. Use a fresh wipe per stroke to avoid contaminating unsoiled areas. Make sure to also clean the surface of the changing table/bed where your baby's diaper was changed.
Babies have different skin types, so the wipes you must use should match their skin needs and skin condition. There are various baby wipes in the market and each of them have different features.
Going for organic baby wipes that contain all-natural ingredients will secure your baby's safety. Some organic baby wipes offer 99.9 percent of the water with a little fruit or plant extract. They are hypoallergenic, soft, and less abrasive.
Aloe vera is known for its skin-soothing, cooling, and moisturizing abilities, so it's good for your baby's skin. Also, babies are prone to bug bites, so lavender oil can help by healing it. Tea tree oil will keep your baby away from having rashes, and lemon oil will improve your baby's skin.
When using baby wipes that only have water as an ingredient, avoid purchasing in bulk. These wipes are prone to mold and bacteria growth because there are no preservatives. Some brands of wipes also have chamomile and aloe vera which are advertised to soothe babies’ skin. But different babies have different skin sensitivities. Try out a small pack of wipes first to determine if there’s any skin irritation.
Some baby wipes might say that they are gentle for baby's skin, but they still might contain some hazardous ingredients. Always check if some harsh chemicals might lead to severe skin issues on your baby or even worsen your baby's skin condition if your baby has a skin rash or irritation already.
Keep in mind that your baby wipes should not contain paraben and phenoxyethanol. Both are chemical preservatives and are widely known and used in the cosmetics industry. They are used as anti-bacterial to prevent molds. They make the skin more sensitive resulting in rashes and other skin diseases.
Alcohol might be sanitizing, but it is not suitable for a baby's skin because it makes it dry, leading to skin irritation. Benzethonium Chloride and Quaternium-52 are both quaternary salt and are usually used in cleaning products. They might get the skin irritated when used repeatedly.
Choose wipes that have as few ingredients as possible and don't have synthetic preservatives. Avoid wipes with formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, which are known allergens and can cause cancer.
Beware of phthalates also, which can disrupt hormones and fertility. When used repeatedly, alcohol in baby wipes can dissolve the natural oils on the skin, causing dryness. This disrupts the skin’s protective barrier and increases the chances of irritation and skin infections.
Babies' skins are sensitive. When buying baby wipes, we recommend going for unscented options because they are less harsh on the skin and will not cause any irritation or reactions.
Scented baby wipes might be appealing because it gives your baby a fresh smell after cleansing, but these usually contain additives and chemicals to produce fragrances that might irritate your baby's skin.
Fragrance is a common cause of contact dermatitis wherein skin becomes irritated after exposure to an irritant or allergen. This may not always occur on the first use but after a few days to weeks. Select skin products for babies that are labeled fragrance-free and not just unscented (which can contain a masking fragrance) to avoid any redness or itching.
Baby wipes come in small and large packs. When deciding, think about how often you use it. Buy large packs if you use baby wipes often to save you the time and hassle that you get from repeatedly buying small packages. These usually contain 120 to 240 sheets or even higher - recommended when constantly changing the diapers.
Small packs are more portable and perfect for keeping inside your pocket when going out or traveling with your little ones. You can also choose small kits if you only use it if your baby doesn't usually make himself dirty or if you only use it for hands, face, and minor specks of dirt. It usually contains 20 to 100 sheets, enough for low usage.
Opt for baby wipes that come with a hard plastic lid, as opposed to ones that tape to the bag - this will ensure that your baby wipes won't dry out. You can also get some that come in tub-like refillable containers. These are bulky and not as travel-friendly, but these keep the moisture well and usually contain more wipes.
Before the baby is born, purchase wipes in smaller packs. Your baby’s skin might not be able to tolerate a particular brand’s ingredients. You may need to test a few brands of wipes before finding the one most suitable for your baby’s skin and your cleaning needs. Once you have found a particular type of baby wipes that cleanses well and doesn't irritate the baby's skin, you can start buying in bulk.
