Starting August 15, the Philippine government is requiring commuters to don face shields on top of their face masks. However, you might be wondering, how effective are they? Experts suggest that wearing a face shield can minimize your exposure to the virus and prevent other people from getting sick if you're feeling under the weather.
On top of that, this added layer of protection will prevent you from touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, which is a common way that the virus enters your system. To help you decide, we've come up with a handy buying guide, product recommendations, and tips on how to clean your face shield below. Let's get started!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we must take extra precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. This includes wearing a face shield on top of our masks. The former is commonly used by healthcare practitioners or people who are in close contact with the public which include essential office workers.
Basically, a face shield serves as a two-way barrier against pathogens. It prevents particles from entering your eyes, nose, or mouth, which is how the virus usually enters the body. At the same time, it prevents the spread of microbes to other people if you’re feeling unwell.
Most of us agree that wearing a mask and face shield takes a bit of time to adjust to. As such, we might be tempted to constantly adjust and touch them, which can cause cross-contamination and accidentally infect us. A face shield eliminates this problem, since it is quite difficult to touch your face when you’re wearing it.
On top of that, a face shield is also reusable and easy-to-clean, so you can definitely use it for a long time. It is also cost-friendly, so you wouldn’t have to shell out a lot of money to protect yourself from the corona virus and other dangerous pathogens. Plus, it comes in various designs which cater to kids and adults alike.
According to the CDC, plastic shields reduce the number of inhaled droplets by 96%. Ready to purchase your own face shield? Here are a few pointers to take note of.
Most face shields are made from durable plastic since this material effectively wards off pathogens and makes clean ups easier. For a more detailed description, here are the specifics.
Polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET, is extremely resistant to pressure, high temperatures, and UV rays. Although it is lightweight, it is exceptionally sturdy. Also, since this material is often used as packaging in the food industry, it is safe to use and recyclable.
PVC or Polyvinyl chloride has similar characteristics to PET in that the former is rigid and durable. The only difference is that PVC is usually less expensive and more common than PET. Hence, it is often used in the field of construction and electronics.
If you’d like a biodegradable and allergy-friendly face shield, we recommend choosing one made from acetate. This environment-friendly material is derived from wood pulp or cotton, which means that it does not release toxic gases. Plus, it has remarkable optical clarity so you can easily see where you’re going.
Face shields come in many different styles which cater to various ages and styles. Below is a quick guide to help you decide.
Wearing spectacles while donning a face shield can be uncomfortable at times. Hence, it is best to choose one with an eyeglass stand to prevent your beloved specs from falling over and possibly being contaminated.
Making your little one wear a face shield can be quite difficult. But by choosing one in a fun print, your child will wear it in no time!
For kids and adults alike, purchasing a face shield that comes in a hat will make it easier and more comfortable to put it on. Plus, some manufacturers produce caps which have detachable face shields, so you can also use the former by itself even after the pandemic.
Essentially, the face shield should cover your entire face. This means that it should go above your eyebrows, below your chin, and wrap the side of your face. There should also be no gap between your forehead and the headpiece.
Another thing to consider is that it shouldn’t be too tight nor too loose. The face shield shouldn’t cause headaches, since you’re probably going to wearing it for a long time. Hence, consider one which has adjustable straps or an elastic band.

Cleaning your shield is as easy as 1-2-3! Here are the steps.
We recommend doing this outside your house to prevent the spread of microbes inside your home. Put on gloves and a mask before picking up the soiled face shield and proceeding to the next step.
Test a small amount of the cleaning solution in a less visible place to prevent damaging the whole shield. Also, it’s best to avoid using abrasive cleaning products and paper towels since these can scratch the surface of the shield or make it foggy.
For quick cleanups, a mild, disinfecting wipe or 70% alcohol will do! Wipe both the inside and outside the shield with the aforementioned cleaning agents and let it absorb the solution for a few minutes. To dry, use a soft towel or microfiber cloth.
For more thorough cleanups, rinse the face shield with mild dishwashing liquid and water. Use a soft sponge or cloth to scrub the shield. Afterwhich, rinse the shield with water and dry with a soft towel or microfiber cloth.
