10 Best Cleansing Balms in the Philippines 2021 (Clinique, Banila Co., and More)

Cleansing balms have been gaining popularity because of its effectiveness in removing makeup and built-up oil and dirt on the face. Jeepneys and tricycles produce a lot of air pollution – this can stick to your skin, clog your pores, and cause breakouts or premature aging when not washed properly.

Also, cleansing balms are more portable and travel-friendly since they don't spill or leak. They also won't drip down your face upon application. For this article, we will give you a detailed guide on what to look for in your cleansing balm and a list of our faves!

What is a Cleansing Balm?

What is a Cleansing Balm?

Cleansing balms are oil-based cleansers that have similar ingredients as cleansing oils but are thicker and creamier in consistency. Balms are great at removing heavy or waterproof makeup, as well as the natural oils or sebum that your skin produces.

To top it all off, it does the cleansing without friction and without drying the skin. Cleansing balms are also great for use around the eye area because they are usually made with natural ingredients that won't irritate sensitive skin. They are extremely moisturizing to the skin since they are made with skin-conditioning oils

How to Choose a Cleansing Balm – Buying Guide

Cleansing balms have a lot of skin benefits. Due to the rising demand for them, brands have been coming out with a lot of options. Let us help you find the perfect one for you.

Select a Cleansing Balm That Matches Your Skin Type

As with any other skincare product, ingredinets will work differently depending on the skin composition. To get the most benefits, go for a product that matches your skin type.

For Oily and Acne-Prone Skin, Look for Oils Rich in Linoleic Acid

For Oily and Acne-Prone Skin, Look for Oils Rich in Linoleic Acid

When you have oily skin, you might have a fear of using oil-based products – fear not! Oil attracts oil, so cleansing balms and other oil-based cleansers actually do wonders at cleaning deep-seated dirt and sebum that clog your pores.

Harsh cleansers may irritate and dry out your skin, which may cause your skin to produce more oil. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you will benefit a lot from cleansing balms that contain oils that are rich in linoleic acid. These include sunflower seed oil, grape seed oil, rosehip seed oil, safflower oil, and shea butter.

You can also go for ingredients like charcoal or mud, as these absorb oil and have a mattifying effect. Coconut oil and almond oil are natural surfactants. However, you might want to stay away from these as they have a higher chance of breaking you out.

Hydrating Ingredients for Dry and Maturing Skin

Hydrating Ingredients for Dry and Maturing Skin

Cleansing balms are great for all skin types. However, dry and maturing skin might be the skin type that will reap the most benefits from cleansing balms. Aside from deeply cleansing the pores of unwanted gunk, it will also add that much-needed hydration.

Look for a cleansing balm with humectant ingredients or those that pull moisture from the environment into the skin to keep your skin plump and instantly younger-looking. Examples of humectants are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and peptides.

Oils like pomegranate oil and rosehip oil work well for dry and maturing skin. Balms also contain ingredients that are excellent antioxidants like vitamin E or polyphenols – great ingredients for anti-aging!

Go for Simple Ingredients If You Have Sensitive Skin

Go for Simple Ingredients If You Have Sensitive Skin

In general, cleansing balms contain very few irritating ingredients. They also do a great job of cleansing the skin without the need for tugging at the skin or adding unnecessary friction. Some cleansing balms may even provide the skin with a calming effect!

Watch out for soothing ingredients like green tea, coconut oil, chamomile extract, or sunflower oil. Also, it is a good idea to avoid fragrance and high concentrations of essential oils in skincare items when you have sensitive skin.

Go for Simple Ingredients If You Have Sensitive Skin

Look for the paraben-free, hypoallergenic, or dermatologist-tested tags on the label, so you're sure the product is gentle and won't cause reactions.

To test if a product will cause a reaction on your skin, you can do a patch test. Apply a small amount of product on your neck or elbow. If it turns red, gets itchy, or produces a tingling sensation, it is best to avoid the product.

If You Want Deep Cleansing, Go for Products with Powerful Surfactants

If You Want Deep Cleansing, Go for Products with Powerful Surfactants

Cleansing balms are infused with nourishing oils that are beneficial to any skin type. However, each brand's formulation is different. Some may contain surfactants, and some may not.

Surfactants are cleansing ingredients that help release the surface tension on your skin and melt away the makeup or impurities. As you rub the balm on your skin, it will dissolve your makeup and turn milky white

If You Want Deep Cleansing, Go for Products with Powerful Surfactants

A lot of popular products use surfactants in their cleansing balms, and many people with oily skin prefer it. One of the most effective ingredients is mineral oil. However, this ingredient might cause mild irritation if you have sensitive skin.

You can go for natural surfactants like coconut oil, Manuka honey, and sunflower seed oil. Ethylhexyl palmitate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, or cetyl ethylhexanoate are also excellent cleansers, so look for those on the label.

How to Use a Cleansing Balm

How to Use a Cleansing Balm

Cleansing balms are great as the first step of your double-cleanse method. To start, scoop a small amount of cleansing balm with clean fingers or a small spatula. Apply directly to dry face, and start with the eye area if you are wearing eyeliner, mascara, or eyeshadow.

During this part, you may look like a panda, but that's a natural part of the process, so don't worry! Continue rubbing the balm towards the rest of your face, massaging in a circular motion. If you have makeup on your neck, massage that area as well.

How to Use a Cleansing Balm

Wipe with a damp washcloth, then rinse your face with your favorite facial wash or cleanser. After using, you might be tempted to leave it on your skin, some products claim you don't have to wash the balm off, but we strongly suggest using a gentle face cleanser after the cleansing balm

Leaving the balm on your face without washing means you leave the mixture of makeup, dirt, and oil on the surface of your skin – a recipe for breakouts and skin damage!

After washing the face, apply your choice of moisturizer. If heading out, don't forget to protect your skin with some sunscreen.

Summary

Throughout the day, dirt and oil build up on our skins. If not cleansed properly, this can lead to breakouts, especially when you wear makeup. Just washing your face with a face wash is usually not enough. Use a cleansing balm to thoroughly rid your skin of all these acne-causing factors.
