How to Choose a Succulent Pot – Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Choose the right material for your succulent pot.
  2. Check for drainage holes to prevent root rot.
  3. Get the right size to ensure allowance for growth.
  4. Select a design that complements your succulent.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

1

Choose the Right Material for Your Succulent Pot

Choosing the right material for your succulent pot depends on your plant's needs. That's because some materials work best indoors, while others are better suited for outdoor use. To understand the differences between these variants, scroll down below.

Terracotta, Ceramic, or Concrete Pots Offer Maximum Breathability

Terracotta, Ceramic, or Concrete Pots Offer Maximum Breathability

Since your plant needs room to breathe, selecting a pot made from a porous material such as terracotta, ceramic, or concrete allows adequate air and moisture to flow inside and outside the planter. Plus, these materials can also absorb heat, which is what your succulent likes.

Terracotta or ceramic pots are fortunately available in most gardening stores. These types of pots can be used both outdoors and indoors, and they provide stability to even top-heavy plants. We recommend going for an unglazed version as this offers more breathability.

Likewise, concrete pots are also made to withstand all types of weather conditions, making them ideal for outdoor use. Additionally, when concrete pots warm up under the sunlight, they also heat the soil and keep it warm. This is especially helpful when raising succulents from warmer climates. Lastly, they fit a wide variety of themes such as classical, traditional, rustic, and even industrial.

Plastic Pots Are Budget-Friendly and Lightweight

Plastic Pots Are Budget-Friendly and Lightweight

Another popular option is plastic, which is readily available at a low price in almost all gardening shops. If you’re the type to move your plants into the sunlight each morning or if you like rearranging your garden, then this is the pot for you. It is easy to carry and maneuver around the house and your garden.

Plastic pots can also hold their shape well despite the changing weather, which is especially important for a tropical country like the Philippines. However, do keep in mind that you’d need to water succulents less often when using a plastic pot as it’s not as breathable as other materials.

Wooden Pots Help Your Succulent Get the Right Amount of Sunlight and Water

Wooden Pots Help Your Succulent Get the Right Amount of Sunlight and Water

For that rustic-vintage look, go for a pot made from wood. More than just its visual appeal, the porosity of a wooden pot allows it to retain just the right amount of moisture and heat for your growing succulent. Hence, it does not dry out quickly.

However, we recommend using this planter indoors to preserve its quality. We also suggest treating the wood to prevent the pot and your succulent from rotting. Additionally, placing a plastic container inside the pot helps prevent excess moisture from getting trapped.

Glass Pots Help You Check on Your Plant Easily

Glass Pots Help You Check on Your Plant Easily

If you’re a newbie plant parent, we suggest getting a glass pot for your succulent. The material's transparency helps you monitor your plant as you can easily check if it needs more water or sunlight, or even if some pesky bugs are hiding underneath need to be removed.

On top of that, it allows sunlight to seep through different parts of the succulent, which is extremely beneficial for its growth. Note that since this aesthetically-pleasing planter is not as porous as your regular pot and often does not have a drainage hole, it’s best to water your succulent sparingly.

2

Check for Drainage Holes to Prevent Root Rot

Check for Drainage Holes to Prevent Root Rot

Since succulents are better off without much water, choosing a pot with a drainage hole will help these plants grow and thrive. The drainage hole allows excess water to drain out of the pot, preventing mushy, yellow leaves and root rot in the process.

Do note that the drainage hole should be the right size for your plant. It should be large enough to drain excess water but small enough to prevent soil from getting washed away. However, if you find that the hole is still too big, you can cover it up with some mesh tape which can help keep soil in while the water flows out.

3

Get the Right Size to Ensure Allowance for Growth

Get the Right Size to Ensure Allowance for Growth

Getting a succulent pot that’s the right size for your plant will encourage it to grow properly at its own pace. That’s because one that’s too small will hinder its growth, while one that’s too big will make the roots spread out far too quickly, leading to an incorrectly-grown succulent.

Conversely, the diameter of the pot should have 1-2 inches of allowance on all sides so that your succulent will have enough room to grow and spread. The depth of the planter should also be adequate in that the plant can grow its roots, get enough sunlight, and retain the right amount of moisture.

4

Select a Design That Complements Your Succulent

Select a Design That Complements Your Succulent

Although the design is still a matter of preference, you might be wondering which pot looks good with which succulent. Worry not, as we’re here to help you decide! If you’d like to highlight your succulent, it’s best to choose a plain-colored pot or one with minimal designs. This type of pot is fool-proof and will blend well with any theme.

On the other hand, if you’d like to go big and bold, select one with colorful designs. This will make a good conversation piece inside your home or garden. However, the rule of thumb is that the pot should match the succulent’s appearance. The color scheme, as well as the height of the plant, should be in line with the pot that you plan to purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most asked questions on the web answered by the mybest team.

How to Take Succulent Cuttings?

Choose a nice-looking leaf or offshoot, which are new succulents sprouting from adult ones, from your succulent and trim it carefully with some pruning shears or a razor-sharp pair of scissors. Set your cutting aside in a location with indirect sunlight and leave it to dry for one to five days, depending on your local climate and temperature.

Once your cutting has developed a callus, plant the cut side in a pot and regularly observe for growing roots. Only after the roots have grown should you water your succulent cutting.

How Deep Should a Succulent Pot Be?

A pot's depth is largely dependent on the type of succulent that will be put inside it. For best results, check whether your succulent variant has a shallow or deep root system. Putting shallow-rooted succulents in too thick a layer of soil will likely lead to the build-up of moisture below and cause root rot.

Conversely, putting deep-rooted succulents in too shallow a pot will obstruct the growth of its roots. Always avoid having too much soil on the bottom to prevent overwatering and excess moisture build-up.

When to Change Succulent Pot?

As a general rule, change pots every 16 months to two years. You should monitor and inspect your succulents regularly. If you notice its leaves turning yellowish and shriveling up, this might be an indicator of root rot, pests, and other diseases that can be remedied by repotting them into a new pot with fresh soil.

If you see roots growing out through the drainage holes or if your succulent is starting to topple over, then change its pot to a bigger one to ensure that it grows freely and properly. Don't forget to repot just before your succulent's growing season starts to give it enough time to accumulate to its new environment.
