Ready to get into the hobby of growing succulents? Before you pick up your very first one, read on to know how to select the perfect succulent for you.
To begin with, choosing a healthy succulent means that it has a higher chance of survival, which will motivate you to keep going and grow your collection. When purchasing online, it’s best to ask the seller for pictures before shipment to ensure that you’re getting a healthy plant.
The rule of thumb is that the succulent should be brightly colored and flawless. In particular, choose one with dry soil and plump, firm, and even-colored leaves. These are signs that the succulent is getting just the right amount of water and sunlight.
Conversely, it’s best to avoid one with mushy and yellow leaves, black stems, and wet roots, since these indicate an unhealthy succulent, which makes it difficult to recover the plant. It’s also best to steer clear from a plant with bumps and bugs because these may be signs of infection.
For newbie plant parents, it’s best to start off with a larger and more established succulent since it already has a well-developed root system. This means that it’s easier to maintain and is more tolerant to rookie mistakes such as underwatering and improper sunlight. Thus, look for tightly packed roots, also known as root ball.
Before you bring home your very first succulent, check the space where you plan to put the plant. Is there enough light, air, and space for the plant to grow in that particular area? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and start searching online!
In general, colorful and tender succulents are better suited indoors while cacti and hardy succulents would thrive more outdoors due to the difference in sunlight exposure requirements. Also, research about the place of origin of the succulent so you can determine if it’s suited for the climate in your place.
More often than not, purchasing a succulent from a reputable and experienced seller will ensure that you’ll get a healthy succulent. We also recommend choosing a merchant that’s near your location to lessen the risk of damage during shipment.
Nonetheless, it’s important to read the reviews so that you’ll know if the plant that they’re selling is worth the splurge or not. Also check if the succulent is well-packaged since it can be quite delicate.
Lastly, since plants from Lazada and Shopee are often uprooted, check if they’re air-dried properly to prevent root rot. On the other hand, if they're already planted in a pot, see if the succulents are planted in the right potting mix and a pot with a drainage hole.
From all-time favorites to unique finds, we've compiled a list of products to satisfy every plantito and plantita out there. But before you scroll down for our top picks, just remember to keep them away from your children and pets so that everyone will be safe and healthy.

However, even if your little succulent can take care of itself, it's best to check on it every once in a while to see if there are dead foliage and bugs that need to be removed or if it needs more sunlight and water. To all new plantitos and plantitas, welcome to the club and happy planting!
