How to Choose a Non Stick Frypan - Buying Guide

When you see a non stick pan being sold at an affordable price online, you may be tempted to immediately click the Add to Cart button. Before you do, familiarize yourself first with the qualities of a well-made pan. Doing this will help ensure a pleasant online shopping experience.

Check Out the Coating of the Pan

The frypan's coating is responsible for its non stick properties. The characteristics of the three most commonly used coatings are discussed below.

Teflon for Excellent Chemical Resistance

Teflon for Excellent Chemical Resistance

Teflon is the trade name of a slippery substance called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). PTFE's chemically inert, which means that it doesn't react with other materials. Therefore, there'll be no harmful interaction if it comes into contact with food

Regarding this, you might've heard about perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a harmful chemical that was previously used in producing Teflon. Since 2015, PFOA's no longer used to make Teflon products in the US. Its use has also been phased out by reputable non stick cookware manufacturers worldwide.

Teflon for Excellent Chemical Resistance

PTFE is non-toxic as well, so there's no need to worry about accidentally ingesting Teflon bits that got scraped off of a scratched pan. Its non-reactive property ensures that it'll not break down during digestion if you've only eaten a small amount. Plus, PTFE's waterproof, so the sauce won't adhere to the pan's bottom.

Thus, it'll be easier for you to wash the cookware afterward. This makes it great for folks who love to cook juicy cuts of meat. Lastly, it can handle up to 340ºC but don't leave an empty PTFE-coated pan over high heat for too long. Although it has a high melting point, Teflon deteriorates under extreme heat, so you shouldn't heat it beyond 350ºC.

Stone Coating for a Food-Safe Pan

Stone Coating for a Food-Safe Pan

Non stick stone pans consist of an aluminum, carbon steel, or stainless steel core with a mineral-based finish. A lot of materials can be used on the surface of stone-coated pans like marble, stone, or titanium.

This coating is affixed to the pan by exposing it to a high temperature, which results in durable cookware. This type of pan's quick to clean as well. Plus, its surface's non-porous, so harmful chemicals will not seep into the food. This quality makes it suitable for health-conscious foodies.

Make the glaze last by exclusively using bamboo, plastic, or wooden utensils because using abrasive turners can damage your pan. As much as possible, do not put your stone-coated pan over high heat for too long. It's much safer to use medium heat while cooking.

Ceramic Coating for Unparalleled Heat Resistance

Ceramic Coating for Unparalleled Heat Resistance

Most ceramic non stick pans are actually made of metal that's covered in a silica-based sol-gel coating. Its glossy surface has a ceramic-like appearance, and that's why it's called ceramic. This coating type is tough and can withstand temperatures of up to 450ºC, making the ceramic pan a perfect match for households who often cook food that require high heat.

However, ceramic glaze tends to wear off much faster than other coating types. If you want a long-lasting pan, get ceramic coated cookware from reputable brands. More layers of ceramic finish are placed on good quality cookware to extend its lifespan.

Opt for Well-Made Handles

The handle bears the weight of the pan and its contents when you cook, so its quality should be exceptional. Read on to learn about the features of a sturdy handle.

Pay Attention to the Handle's Material

Pay Attention to the Handle's Material

The handle should also be safe to touch when the pan is in use. Therefore, it should have a protective cover like silicone, a material whose temperature limit is 204ºC. Phenolic plastic, the material used for Bakelite handles, is another option. This type of plastic is heat-resistant and can stay cool for a long time. It can withstand 175ºC.

There are also pans with stainless steel handles. This type of handle is sturdy and has a lower thermal conductivity than aluminum, which allows it to remain cool for much longer. Thus, some aluminum pans have stainless steel handles.

Mind How It Has Been Attached

Mind How It Has Been Attached
The most common ways of attaching the handle to the pan are by welding and using rivets. If the handle's welded, it means that the body and the handle were merged through melting. Sometimes a connector is used. The downside with this is that it may suddenly get detached.

On the contrary, rivets are tiny pieces of steel or aluminum that act as a seal between the body and the handle. The rivets keep the two firmly attached. Although riveted handles are less prone to breakage, leftover food can collect around the rivets if they're not thoroughly cleaned.

To prevent dirt accumulation, use a non-abrasive sponge or a toothbrush to clean the area. If the pan's dishwasher-safe, you may also load it in for extensive cleaning. To avoid damaging cookware, go for mild dishwasher detergents.

Foldable Handles Makes a Pan Portable

Foldable Handles Makes a Pan Portable

People who love to go mountain climbing should consider getting pans with a foldable handle. Aside from being easy to carry around multiple campsites, it'll also allow you to whip up a warm meal even if you're away from home. You can also use it to reheat the food you've packed for the trip.

Get to Know the Material

The material makes up the body of the pan. The three most commonly used materials are discussed below.

Aluminum for Quick Heating

Aluminum for Quick Heating

Aluminum pans are known for easily getting warm, but it's not great with allocating heat evenly throughout the pan. It's also more affordable compared to stainless steel, which makes it perfect for people on a budget.

However, this material can't be used on induction cookers on its own. Cookware manufacturers work around this by attaching a strip of stainless steel at the pan's bottom.

Get Even Heating With Stainless Steel

Get Even Heating With Stainless Steel

Stainless steel's great if you want evenly heated food - they are better at maintaining even heat distribution, but tend to be bulkier and more costly than aluminum pans. However, pure stainless steel is a poor heat conductor, so well-made stainless kitchenware contains an aluminum or copper base to boost its heating properties.

Carbon Steel for Affordable Durability

Carbon Steel for Affordable Durability

Carbon steel's another material that's frequently used to make pans. It's an alloy that contains a huge percentage of iron and less than 2% of carbon.

Pans made of carbon steel are light but tough. This makes it suitable for those who want a portable pan that can last for a long time. It heats up quickly, but it can swiftly cool off as well. Lastly, most carbon steel pans are fairly inexpensive.

Get the Size That's Best for You

Get the Size That's Best for You

Take note of the pan's dimension and your cooktop's measurement before buying. Doing this ensures that your new pan will work well with the stove. The size also determines the pan's capacity. Big ones are great for preparing food for gatherings. These are perfect for large families as well.

On the other hand, little pans work best for those who live on their own and for trying out a new dish. If you're not yet confident with following the new recipe you've found, make a small batch first to leave room for experimentation.

  4. Put the rolls in a strainer to drain excess oil. Afterward, set the shanghai rolls aside to make room for making the sweet and sour sauce.
  5. To make the sauce, put water, salt, brown sugar, and vinegar inside a non-aluminum saucepan.
  6. Begin stirring when the sauce starts to boil. You must reduce the heat to make it simmer.
  7. Add slurry made from water and flour into the mix. Keep stirring until you reach the desired consistency. The amount of slurry you need depends on the kind of flour you use.
