Things You Need to Know About Wine

Things You Need to Know About Wine

Wine is a type of alcoholic beverage extracted from fermented grapes. It is made from wine grapes, which are smaller in size, sweeter, and have a lot more seeds than table grapes.

Red wine is made from darker red or black grapes, including the skin; this provides their red color. It is soft, rich, and velvety compared to white wine’s zesty, crisp, and floral notes. This is why white wine is paired with lighter meals such as fish and chicken, while red wine is usually paired with heavier dishes such as meat.
Things You Need to Know About Wine

Generally speaking, any fruit can be used for wine, such as cranberries, apples, and plums. However, when we think of wine, it usually pertains to grapes unless otherwise indicated. The difference between wine and beer is that beer is made from grains and wine from fruit.

When looking at wine labels, you may get confused by the term vintage. This simply means the year in which the grapes were picked and what year it was produced. On occasions, you may come across a label with no vintage (NV). This is because it is made from several vintage blends.

How to Choose a Red Wine - Buying Guide

Choosing a red wine is not a troublesome affair. Here are some of the basics you should consider.

Consider Its Capping Method

Wine can be sealed either with a cork or a screw top. Many people associate corked wines with being a classic, while screw tops are commonly mistaken as inferior. However, this is not always the case.

Cork Aids in Wine Aging

Cork Aids in Wine Aging

Cork type caps have long been associated as the preferred choice for capping wine. This is due to how cork is a natural resource for sealing a bottle. Corks have also been proven to benefit wine aging as it naturally let in a small amount of air, which transforms the wine, making it more drinkable.

However, cork is noted to taint wine, which means that it can transfer a wet cardboard aroma when it comes in contact with the wine. It is also susceptible to crumbling, making it prone to breakage and leaving residue in your wine.

Screw Cap Bottles Are Easier to Open

Screw Cap Bottles Are Easier to Open

Screw cap bottles are more consistent in sealing the wine better, and it does not allow oxygen to pass through. This makes the wine better preserved, especially for long-term aging. It is also a more affordable option to cork and easier to open as well.

However, some have noted its environmental impact. Its slow aging process has also raised some eyebrows due to the complete absence of oxygen absorbed by the cap.

Determine Its Alcohol Content

Determine Its Alcohol Content

The degree of alcohol in the wine is expressed in terms of alcohol by volume or ABV. This is determined by the amount of sugar in wine that has developed during harvest, as yeast consumes sugar and converts it into alcohol.

Alcohol content ranges from as little as 5.5 to as high as 20% ABV. This means if your wine has a higher ABV, you might consider sipping on a small amount. Alternately, if your wine has a lower ABV, you can opt to consume more if you want a buzz.

Select the Kind of Wine You'll Enjoy Most

Wines are characterized by elements such as body, acidity, and tannins. Body refers to the texture in your mouth; acidity pertains to the tartness or sour feeling. The higher the acidity, the lower the pH. Tannins, on the other hand, are how bitter it is. It can leave your mouth feeling dry, which is why wine is often referred to as having a dry quality.

Rosé is Crisp and Fruity - Pinot Noir Rosé and Provence Rosé

Rosé is Crisp and Fruity - Pinot Noir Rosé and Provence Rosé

Rosé is considered a medium between white and red wine. It is made by shortly dyeing a wine with the skins of red grapes, which explains its pale red color. It is often made in the Mediterranean region as well as France.

It is described to be fruity in flavor and pairs best with spicier foods. Rosé is also best served chilled to appreciate its fruitiness. Popular examples of this type include a Pinot Noir and Provence Rosé

Light-Bodied Red Wines Are Delicate and Subtle - Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, and Lambrusco

Light-Bodied Red Wines Are Delicate and Subtle - Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, and Lambrusco

This type of wine is noted to have subtle flavors and is perfect for those who don’t want the bold flavor of full-bodied wines. It is great for both wine experts and beginners alike as it has lower tannins and bright acidity. It is also noted to be delicate and fruity.

It pairs well with chicken and other types of poultry as well as cream pasta. Common types of this are Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, and Lambrusco.

Medium-Bodied Red Wines Are Versatile - Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, and Cabernet Franc

Medium-Bodied Red Wines Are Versatile - Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, and Cabernet Franc

This is sometimes referred to as “food wines” for their ability to be paired well with virtually any dish. Like its namesake, it is a happy medium that can pair well with foods ranging from vegetables to pasta and even fatty meat dishes.

It has been described to have a moderate amount of tannins and medium acidity, making it perfect for those wine sessions during the week. Notable varieties include Merlot, Sangiovese, Barbera, and Cabernet Franc.

Full-Bodied Red Wines Are Rich and Powerful in Flavor - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Shiraz

Full-Bodied Red Wines Are Rich and Powerful in Flavor - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Shiraz

The complete opposite of light-bodied wines, this style has more tannins and more alcohol content, so you should take your time when sipping. It is noted to be powerful and rich; therefore, it should be paired with food of corresponding boldness and red meats such as steak, barbecued meats, and mushroom dishes.

It is described to have more complex flavors and is richer in mouthfeel. It also has a palate-cleansing effect as it cuts through the richness of the food though it is great on its own as well. Popular choices for full-bodied wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Shiraz.

Take Note of the Country of Origin

Take Note of the Country of Origin

In reading wine labels, it is indicated which region and country it had originated from. Top wine producers usually come from the European region - France, Italy, and Spain as well as the US, Argentina, and Australia.

Wine labels also indicate whether it is made of a single variety, which means it contains about 75 - 85% of a single type of grape, depending on each country. Single variety highlights the quality of that type of grape.

On the other hand, wine blends contain different varieties of grapes. It helps mellow out the taste of the wine, making it more complex and giving it more structure, so it is really a matter of preference.

Boozy Sangria in a Pinch

Erwan Heussaff demonstrates how to make a quick Sangria that's ready in just 5 minutes. Perfect for when you need a quick refreshment or have guests over. His version leans towards more traditional and basic, so you can embellish it how you want to.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Bottle Red Wine
  • 1/4 cup Triple Sec or Cointreau
  • 1/2 cup Cognac
  • 2 Lemons
  • 1-2 Apples
  • 1-2 Oranges
  • 3/4 cup Orange Juice (optional)
  • White Sugar

Procedure:

  1. Pour the wine, triple sec, cognac, and white sugar into a large glass pitcher. You can replace the white sugar with Sprite, 7-Up, or club soda if you prefer to dilute the alcohol as Sangria is noted to lean boozier with just a hint of fruitiness.
  2. Slice fruits thinly and set aside a couple of pieces for later. Add the sliced fruits to the concoction. You can macerate them to release their juices.
  3. If serving the sangria immediately, add the orange juice. Alternatively, you can opt to skip it if you are going to let it infuse overnight. This makes it slightly sweeter and enhances the fruit taste better. Though do keep in mind that Sangria is best served chilled
  4. To assemble your drink, place a few slices of fruits in a glass, add ice, and pour the wine. Enjoy!
