A good pair of shoes may take you places but sturdy luggage stuffed with your travel essentials provides the security you need throughout the trip. Be it a local or international tour, using carry-on luggage translates to a hassle-free flight, land trip, or voyage, minus the back-breaking pain we usually get from backpacks and the like.
With the Philippine passport now valid for ten years, you have all the more reason to shell out a little something to grab those items of luggage and make it worth your money. Read on to learn more about carry-on luggage purchases, and don’t skip the list we made for the best carry-on luggage, which could be your potential travel buddy.
People who have been bitten by the travel bug cannot stress enough how much a reliable carry-on luggage will be indispensable for travels here and abroad.
As opposed to checked-in luggage, the carry-ons are what you put in the overhead bin or under your seat so a lot of factors have to be considered. Here are the variables you must consider when planning a trip and the carry-on to travel with you.
Preferably, base your size judgment on the regular number of items you usually stash in your luggage so you could decide on the sweet spot for the size.
For domestic flights, a 22 inches high, 9 inches in deep, and 14 inches wide carry-on luggage is the maximum allowable dimensions. However, you should also check this with the carry-on luggage policy of the airline you are flying.
The earlier mentioned dimensions are followed by Philippine Airlines or PAL, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia. You may go lower this size but not higher. The same applies to international travels, more or less. But vigilance should tell you to check with the aircraft rules by doing some searches online.
The measurements cover the aspects of the luggage, excluding the wheels, in any, and retracting the handles. Factor in the measurements on the insides as well. You may do such by visualizing the items you bring with you in any regular travels - socks, slip-on, change of clothes for a week, to mention a few.
The dimensions stated above have a weight yield of no more than 7 kilos, which is the maximum weight your carry-on should fit into the aircraft's overhead bins or under the passenger seat.
How much the luggage weighs and how much weight it can carry should also be factored in so that it can neatly pass through the weigh-in process of suitcases.
You don't want the bag to consume the weight allowable for carry-ons, the maximum of which is 7 kilos. So the lower the weight, the better when it comes to carry-on luggage. Unless you are buying luggage for checking-in purposes, choose ones built with lightweight materials as well.
You might say you are compromising the durability of the luggage, but this is not always so if much thought has been placed into incorporating ballistic nylon in the luggage's manufacturing.
Ballistic nylon has been tested to be abrasion-resistant and had been purposefully designed for ballistic impacts. This guarantees you and your travel essentials at the same level of protection.
Given the pliant quality of this material, luggage made from nylon allows for expandable options, which is pretty handy for when bringing home giveaways and memorabilia from your place of destination.
If you are prone to overpacking, a nylon-based or other soft-sided bags will be your best friend as it allows for little expansion here and there. Hard-sided ones may be more compact but restricting when it comes to flexibility.
Topping the list of variables for carry-on luggage is its ability to withstand the wear and tear of continued use. Think about the overall heavy-duty appeal.
Polycarbonate luggage consists of the hard-sided line or brand of luggage you may browse upon when shopping online. They typically lean to the heavier side.
With the hard-case, you'll be sacrificing a little of your weight allowable for carry-ons as it weighs no less than 4.2 pounds or close to 2 kilos for the 22-inch types. But if you intended for the item to last longer, polycarbonate is the way to go.
Though it might affect the luggage real estate to a point if it is mounted within the back of the luggage, a handle and wheels mechanics will surely require lesser exertion when you have to pull the luggage around. Your best bet is one that has the handles mounted on the exterior.
Between rollers and spinners, the 360-degree mobility on the latter has traveler raging about it. Since spinners roll upright, there's no weight on your arm. Rollers, however, have to be tipped to an angle and must be pulled in a straight line, a luxury which most travelers may not have given the amount of rushing from one stop to the next.
Spinners, despite their wonders, have to be replaced often as they are more vulnerable to damage and may skid more to a direction that doesn't feel fully under your control. Manufacturers found a way around by adding magnets to the make of the wheels for greater adhesion to the body.
Like most work setup nowadays, you may be still be telecommuting when traveling and, thus, requiring extra from your luggage.
Luggage manufacturers' understanding of the dynamics of today's travels led them to create more gadget-friendly travel goods. For tablets and laptops, padded exterior pockets should be your pocket preference.
Some manufacturers have embraced this design by added two outside pockets – a larger lower pocket below and a smaller top pocket for easy access to your other essentials.
While channeling your Marie-Kondo skills in tidying your luggage, it also helps that the luggage itself provides for segregating items that really need to go together – shoes, socks, delicates, products for personal hygiene, and name a few.
Once this craziness that is the pandemic is over, do not delay in tucking in your travel staples in every inch of these carry-on luggage. Browse on and check which of them makes your heart skip a beat.
