A sleeping mask or sometimes known as a sleeping pack is used at night to keep your skin hydrated. At night is where our skin repairs itself, so a sleeping mask will help that process. It is also helpful for replenishing any hydration lost during the day.
Unlike other types of masks like sheet, clay, and peel-off masks, a sleeping mask is generally not rinsed off. You apply it as you would a regular moisturizer. It is usually applied 2-3 times a week and not every day. It could also be used in place of night creams.
Sleeping masks - aka sleeping packs or leave-on masks - these add-ons have made their way into our skincare routines. But what are they, and what do they really do?
Essentially, they're like a pepped-up night cream! They typically contain active ingredients that address particular skin concerns with the added benefit of allowing them to act as a barrier and sealant (since you typically don't rinse them off).
Skincare is not a one size fits all kind of thing. What works for other people may not work for you. It's a good thing there are different products for different concerns, so read on to acquaint yourself with them.
Just like choosing any other skincare product, you should keep your skin type in mind. Often, the skin reacts poorly because we are not using the appropriate product for our skin type.
Dry skin is characterized by tightness and is sometimes accompanied by flaking or peeling skin. This is usually caused by the environment, such as when you live in a dry and cold climate. Dry skin is usually temporary and can be combated by the use of moisturizers that fit the condition of your skin.
Given its temporary condition, even if you have oily skin, it can turn dry if you are always taking hot showers or swimming in chlorine pools, or using overly stripping cleansers that remove the natural oils of the face.
A way to combat this is to use sleeping masks as it intensively hydrates the skin without the feeling of having too many products on the skin. Look for products with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and glycerin. And avoid products, which use alcohol as it tends to dry out the skin.
First things first: do you have dry or dehydrated skin?
Dry skin refers to your skin type based on your skin's behavior. Signs include flakiness and/or itchiness. Dehydrated skin refers to the temporary state where your skin is losing more water than taking in. Signs include skin feeling tight or looking dull. For dry or dehydrated skin, look for ingredients such as glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid acts as a great humectant that binds water and offers hydration to the skin. Remember, though, that hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes. Larger HA molecules cannot penetrate into the skin - thus, they sit on top of the skin and provide hydration only at the surface. Smaller HA molecules can penetrate deeper into the skin (though only into the epidermis). Thus, a sleeping mask incorporated with hyaluronic acid used twice to thrice a week can be a beneficial add-on.
Having sensitive skin means your skin gets easily irritated and red. It could also be brought about by an underlying condition such as eczema and rosacea, though you would have to check with your dermatologist to be sure.
Your skin could be aggravated if your products have harsh or astringent ingredients such as retinol. With that being said, you should look for ingredients that have soothing properties to avoid irritating your skin.
Calendula is good for relieving skin conditions by promoting the production of collagen and leaves it glowing. Cica or Centella Asiatica has been abuzz in the K-beauty world for its healing properties. It can be found from serums to creams. It helps strengthen your skin barrier and improve its appearance.
For sensitive skin, look for ingredients that are calming or soothing to the skin. Definitely, an alcohol-based or astringent-based product wouldn't be a good fit as this can be irritating. Good options include Centella Asiatica (calms down inflammation and improves skin hydration), panthenol (acts as a humectant and anti-inflammatory), aloe vera (acts as a humectant and anti-oxidant and accelerates healing).
Oily skin is characterized by the production of excess sebum, enlarged pores, as well as a shiny appearance. The area where you reside is also a contributing factor. Given that we have a humid climate, oily skin is more prevalent.
One cause for oily skin is lack of moisture. It is a common misconception that oily skin would not benefit from moisturizer because it would get oilier. For oily skin, water-based ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin are good choices. Hyaluronic acid is a component of the skin that naturally decreases with age. Topical forms of HA hydrate the skin but also aid in skin healing and soothes inflammation. Glycerin is another good choice as it draws in water from the deeper layers of the skin, keeping the skin hydrated.
Acne breakouts are experienced by people of all ages. These are pores clogged by dead skin and oil. They can either be closed comedones, open comedones, or red tender bumps. These can be alleviated by the use of calming products, which can exfoliate not just on the surface but deep onto the skin as well.
Since acne is caused by clogged pores, take care not to choose comedogenic ingredients. This means it could block pores such as mineral oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. These are rather rich in consistency and form a thick layer over your skin.
Sleeping masks can be a great tool to add to your arsenal in skincare. Providing your skin with the right amount of moisture – can help reduce acne. Notable ingredients to look for are Centella Asiatica or more commonly known as Cica; this helps soothe and repair irritated skin.
For acne-prone skin, you'd want to look for ingredients that are non-irritating, non-pore clogging, soothing, and, if possible, anti-bacterial. While nothing compares to salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or retinoids, you can find a good line-up of ingredients incorporated into sleeping masks.
Centella Asiatica, aka cica, works well for acne-prone skin as it reduces inflammation, promotes wound healing (by increasing antioxidant activity), and plays a role in collagen synthesis. It increases skin hydration too!
Nighttime is the best time to use active ingredients, as you are not exposed to the sun. Although sleep masks are primarily designed to hydrate the skin and prevent moisture loss, there are exfoliating sleep masks that can penetrate into a deeper layer of your skin.
Alpha-hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid are effective chemical exfoliants. AHAs stimulate the exfoliation of epidermal cells in the stratum corneum leading to the sloughing off dull skin and promoting cellular renewal. The benefits of AHAs include exfoliation, reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, collagen synthesis, skin lightening, and moisturization.
The packaging should also be considered when it comes to skincare. It must be convenient for you to easily dispense the product with little trouble on your part.
If you are having trouble dispensing the product, jars are convenient, as you only need to scoop it out. No squeezing and pinching involved. It offers great value for money as you can quite literally get to the last drop. You could even use a spatula if you really want to scrape every bit out.
The trouble with jars is that it can be unhygienic as your fingers come in contact with the entirety of the product. In this regard, it is also more prone to contamination. However, it can be remedied if you use a small spatula or scooper to avoid soiling the product.

The nice thing about products in jars is that you can choose larger-sized ones or even refillable packaging, not to mention you can upcycle the packaging and repurpose it into different things. Jars also enable you to wipe out that product. Just make sure that when using products in jars to use clean hands or a spatula to prevent contamination.
Tubes are easier and cleaner to use; you just squeeze the product, and it falls right into your fingertips—no need to sully the whole product with your hands. As far as tubes go, you can go for small amounts if you are trying out a product first or go bigger if you need stock sizes in your supply of skincare.
As tubes only have small openings, the product can remain stable and good for a long period of time as it is not exposed to air that can oxidize or contaminate the product. Some disadvantages are that it is harder to squeeze every last bit of it, and it is harder to return an excess product that was squeezed out.
As for tubed products, they're generally easy to carry around, typically contain fewer preservatives (since you don't have to stick your finger in to get some of the product), and generally remain more stable since it's less exposed to the air.
