How to Choose a Spray Sunscreen – Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Look for a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection.
  2. Opt for sunscreens with a minimum of SPF 30 for effective defense against the sun.
  3. Know the ingredients that truly protect your skin.
  4. Check the PA rating and water resistance for more skin protection when engaging in outdoor activities.
  5. Look into the sprayer, packaging and, expiration date.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

Look for a Sunscreen With a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Look for a Sunscreen With a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Studies show that UVA rays from the sun contribute to photoaging's early appearance on our skin, including patchy or mottled pigmentation, wrinkling, laxity, sagging, dryness, and the like. Meanwhile, UVB rays are principally responsible for sunburn, suntan, and other more serious skin conditions.

That is why it is crucial to choose a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection to include both UVA and UVB light. Experts advise that it provides protection from pre-mature aging and burning your skin.

Dr. Gaile Vitas
Dermatologist
Dr. Gaile Vitas

Sunscreens that say “broad-spectrum” or “multi-spectrum” on their labels provide adequate protection for both UVA and UVB. There is no global official measurement like SPF, but in some countries, they use the PA rating system to measure UVA protection. This was developed in Japan and ranges from + to ++++.

Opt for Sunscreens With a Minimum of SPF 30 for Effective Defense Against the Sun

Opt for Sunscreens With a Minimum of SPF 30 for Effective Defense Against the Sun

SPF stands for sun protection factor. It gives you an idea of the amount of time that you can stay in the sun without being burnt. Let's say if your unprotected skin can remain under the sun for about 10 minutes before it starts to turn red, applying a sunscreen with SPF 20 will allow you to stay for 200 minutes or twenty times the original duration.

When looking for a good sunscreen, skin experts suggest getting a minimum of SPF 30, which is known to give 97% UV protection. Then reapply sunscreen every two to three hours or after swimming or perspiring.

Dr. Gaile Vitas
Dermatologist
Dr. Gaile Vitas

Using sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 on a regular basis has been proven to prevent skin cancer, sunburns, and photoaging. For those with pigmentation problems, I even recommend going for sunscreens with higher SPF.

Sunscreens work as soon as you apply them to your skin. The reason for recommending waiting 20 minutes before stepping out into the sun after sunscreen application is not because it has to absorb into your skin but because it has to settle, especially those that come in emulsion form.

Know the Ingredients That Truly Protects Your Skin

Here are a few known sunscreen filters that can protect your skin from UVA and UVB. Looking into these ingredients will allow you to choose a sunscreen that best protects your skin.

Octinoxate Is Great for Beach or Pool Days

Octinoxate Is Great for Beach or Pool Days

Octinoxate or Octyl methoxycinnamate is one of the most common and oldest active ingredients of sunscreens as it is insoluble in water, making it ideal for waterproof products. It protects your skin from UVB rays and also provides some UVA protection.

Avobenzone for UVA and Octyl Salicylate for UVB Protection

Avobenzone for UVA and Octyl Salicylate for UVB Protection

Avobenzone or Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane absorbs UVA rays, providing broad-spectrum sun protection by absorbing UVA rays. It is a widely used UVA filter due to its safety and efficacy. Meanwhile, Octyl Salicylate is another sunscreen agent that is used to protect skin from UVB rays.

If your product doesn’t have a PA rating, look for the ingredients avobenzone and zinc oxide because these 2 provide UVA protection. But because of technological advancements and increasing knowledge about sunscreens, most contain a good mix of UVA and UVB filters so that you are assured of protection against these harmful UV rays.

Octocrylene for a More Water-Resistant Susncreen

Octocrylene for a More Water-Resistant Susncreen

Octocrylene shields your skin from UVB rays and is a globally-approved sunscreen agent with an approved usage level of 7 to 10 percent in the United States and the European Union. It has a strong water-resistant property and also helps to stabilize avobenzone.

Check the PA Rating and Water-Resistance for More Skin Protection When Engaging in Outdoor Activities

Other things to consider in sunscreens are the PA rating and the water resistance. These will be discussed in further detail below.

The More + in the PA Rating, the Higher the UVA Protection

The More + in the PA Rating, the Higher the UVA Protection

You probably have noticed that some sunscreens are labeled with PA ratings. This rating system is developed in Japan to indicate the level of protection from UVA rays the product offers. You will see ratings like PA+, which means your sunscreen provides some protection against UVA rays, PA++ offers moderate protection and PA ++++ for high UVA protection.

Dr. Gaile Vitas
Dermatologist
Dr. Gaile Vitas

PA, which stands for "Protection Grade of UVA" is actually a Japanese measurement based on the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) Test done on skin exposed to UVA light. This test analyzes how long it takes for skin to tan and compares the results between unprotected and protected skin.

If a product has a PPD of 2, it means that it will take twice as long for the skin to tan when protected, versus when unprotected. If it has a PPD of 4, then it takes four times as long. The rating system is measured with plus (+) signs—the more pluses, the higher the protection.

Check the Water Resistance if You're Going Swimming

Check the Water Resistance if You're Going Swimming

Also, check whether the sunscreen is water-resistant. This is an important feature if you'll be swimming or working out outdoors. It should be able to stay on the skin for 40 to 80 minutes. For it to be effective, apply 20 minutes before stepping outside- spray then massage into your skin.

Take note, however, that no sunscreen is waterproof so you need to reapply. Sweat, water, and towel drying can break down and remove water-resistant sunscreens.

Dr. Gaile Vitas
Dermatologist
Dr. Gaile Vitas

According to the USFDA, water resistance refers to the amount of time a sunscreen will stay on wet skin and this is determined by putting the sunscreen to a test. Water-resistant sunscreens stay effective for 40 minutes in the water, while very water-resistant ones stay effective for 80 minutes in the water.

Look Into the Sprayer, Packaging, and Expiration Date

Look Into the Sprayer, Packaging, and Expiration Date

Some sunscreens come in typical sprayers, while there are mist-type that sprays on evenly and finely. Opt for a spray sunscreen that has an excellent fine mist, easy dispense spray functions, and comes in a secure and no-mess packaging to ensure the potency of the sunscreen ingredients.

Just like any other skincare product, sunscreens should be stamped with an expiration date. It's also good to check if it's safe for both face and body use. If it's not indicated, you can reach out to the online shop or the brand's social media platforms, where you can send queries and get faster answers.

Dr. Gaile Vitas

Dr. Gaile Vitas
According to the US FDA, expiry date or “shelf life” generally refers to “the length of time you can expect a product to look and act as expected and to stay safe for use.” In skincare products, this can be further expounded to mean the time that an active ingredient is expected to be potent and to work at full capacity whether opened on not.

If your product does not contain expiry dates, here are some telltale signs that mean it’s time to put your product away:
  • It smells funky or stale
  • The color is different than before
  • The texture is not the same as before or the components of the products have separated (such as in emulsions of oil and water)
  • You see white or green spots on it—this is likely to be mold

How to Avoid Getting Sunburn

Sometimes we tend to miss areas during our sunscreen application. To make sure you are protected, here's a video from Birchbox to learn some helpful tips to avoid sunburn.

Tips:

  1. Cover any exposed skin including your face, chest, arms, legs, back, and neck. Also, don't forget to spray on your scalp.
  2. Use a sunscreen mist to protect your head from a painful burn and flaky scalp. A hair product with sun protection will keep your strands safe.
  3. Don't forget the ears—even if you have long hair, you can still get burned.
  4. Use an eye cream with SPF to protect your eyes and eyelids.
  5. Prevent chapping and sunburn at once with an SPF lip balm.
  6. Don't get caught red-handed. Use a hand cream with SPF.
  7. Don't forget the back of the knees. A sunscreen mist makes it easy to reach this area.
  8. Don't stop at your ankles. The top of your foot needs sunscreen too!
  9. A makeup setting spray with SPF is the easiest way to reapply to your face throughout the day.
  10. Lastly, don't forget to reapply every after 2 hours.

Applying sunscreens isn't the only way of protecting yourself from the harmful UV rays of the sun. There are many equally important and effective means of sun protection such ash: seeking shade, wearing protective clothing (wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved garments, clothing with UPF), and avoidance of prolonged and direct exposure to sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas

Know how you can care for your skin more! Read below as Dr. Irene answers the most asked questions about spray screens on the web.

How Much Spray Sunscreen Should You Use to Get Enough Sun Protection?

When using spray sunscreens, instead of spraying it directly onto your skin, I suggest spraying it onto your palms before applying it to your skin. That way, you know that all of the product goes onto your skin and not in the air where other people, including yourself, might inhale it.

It is harder to quantify how much sunscreen you've used with sprays; however, according to the American Academy of dermatology, apply spray sunscreens until your skin glistens, and that a typical 6-ounce bottle of spray sunscreen is good enough for six whole-body applications.

How Long Does Spray Sunscreen Last?

How long sunscreens last depend on how much you put on, what type of sunscreen you used, and your activity at the time. If you are engaged in activities wherein you are exposed or outdoors or are swimming and sweating, I would say that your sunscreens won't last more than 1 hour. Waterproof sunscreens may last up to 80 minutes. If you are mainly indoors in an air-conditioned room, one study in Thailand showed that sunscreens could stay on your skin for 5 to 6 hours.

Is Using Spray Sunscreen Once a Day Enough?

Again, it depends on your activity for the day and what you will be exposed to. When in doubt, make sure to properly apply enough amount of sunscreen to provide adequate protection to all exposed parts of the body and re-apply every two to three hours from 9 am to 3 pm.

How We Chose and Ranked Our Product Recommendations

Curious to know how we chose the products on our list? Our buying guide was carefully crafted by the mybest team of writers and editors, so we used it as a basis for choosing and rating. For the top 3 product recommendations, we also looked at reviews from Lazada in addition to the buying guide.

*Please note that we did not test the products and were not paid by any of the brands to include their product on the list.

Ratings and Reviews

For each product on the top 3, we looked at and referenced more than 100 reviews, as well as product ratings in Lazada.

Look for a Sunscreen With a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Broad-spectrum protection is one of the most important features that must not be skipped when looking for an effective sunscreen as this ensures that you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays. Aside from checking the brands' "Broad-Spectrum" claims, we also checked the ingredients list to verify if the product does offer ingredients UVA and UVB defense ingredients.

Opt for Sunscreens With a Minimum of SPF 30 for Effective Defense Against the Sun

Dermatologists and skin experts have time and time again reiterated that sunscreens with at least SPF 30 are a must for effective sun protection, especially when going out. For this criterion, the higher the SPF the product has, the higher rating we gave.

Know the Ingredients That Truly Protects Your Skin

For this criterion, we looked at the ingredients list of each of the products and took note of whether the formula includes sunscreen ingredients (UV filters) such as octinoxate, avobenzone, octyl salicylate, and more.

Check the PA Rating and Water Resistance for More Skin Protection When Engaging in Outdoor Activities

The water resistance feature is essential for those who engage in outdoor activities or for those who perspire heavily because this ensures that the sunscreen stays on the skin. Thus, those that are water-resistant were given higher points. Meanwhile, since PA is a standard Japanese measurement for sunscreens, we regarded PA rating as a bonus point.

Look Into the Sprayer, Packaging, and Expiration Date

Aside from the actual sunscreen content, we rated those products with sprayers that can give a continuous spray and a fine mist higher than those sprayers that need to be pushed several times to dispense the sunscreen.
