What Makes Ceramic Cookware Unique?

What Makes Ceramic Cookware Unique?

Finding the right cookware can be tough sometimes. It needs to be versatile enough to get you through most cooking jobs without much fuss and fit into your budget. If you are looking for cookware that offers quick, tasty, and healthy cooking, then try ceramic cookware.

It has been praised for being environmentally-friendly as it does not contain any Perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA, which is said to release toxic fumes. It also does not require any seasoning, so you can immediately get to cooking.

Another thing is that ceramic is non-reactive to food as it is non-porous. This makes it great if you cook a lot of acidic dishes like tomatoes as it won't wear down the material. It does not transfer any flavor either, so you won't have any metal taste.

How to Choose Ceramic Cookware - Buying Guide

It may be tempting to immediately purchase the first ceramic cookware you see. But you have to keep in mind there are different types of ceramics as well as their compatibility on cooktops.

Determine the Type of Ceramic

When it comes to ceramic cookware, there are two types: ceramic-coated and 100% ceramic. Although both fall under ceramic cookware, you will find that they are rather different. Read on to find out more.

Ceramic-Coated Is Widely Available

Ceramic-Coated Is Widely Available

When we talk of ceramic cookware, a ceramic-coated is almost always what is being pertained to. This isn’t actually made of ceramic, but it refers to any metal pan – stainless steel or aluminum with a ceramic coating.

The coating is made of sol-gel. It consists of silica, a type of sand, and other inorganic materials sprayed or dipped into the cookware and set at a high temperature, which gives it a glossy, ceramic-like finish. It is released during cooking, which gives it non-stick properties.

This makes it great for searing dishes at higher temperatures than traditional non-stick pans. Depending on the manufacturer, the cookware can be coated multiple times to ensure longevity.

Ceramic-Coated Is Widely Available

It is more affordable and lightweight, which is great if you want to foray into the world of ceramic cookware. It is a great option if you want to try with a starter piece instead of investing in an expensive material. It is also widely available.

However, the downside is, the coating eventually wears off, as is the case with all non-stick cookware. So you would have to take care of it and ensure delicate hand washing and using non-abrasive utensils.

100% Ceramic Is More Durable

100% Ceramic Is More Durable

On the other hand, if you want a piece of cookware that can last you for quite some time, 100% ceramic is the way to go. This is made from clay, natural minerals, and water.

It is often baked in a kiln at a really high temperature and it does not contain any metals. It is often finished with a glaze to make it waterproof. This is the kind of cookware that is more durable and scratch-resistant.

100% Ceramic Is More Durable

Unlike ceramic-coated cookware, you do not have to worry about it chipping or scratching, as its coating won't wear off though it is recommended that you refrain from using metal utensils while cooking.

The caveat with 100% ceramic is that it can get rather expensive. It is also quite difficult to source out, unlike its more ubiquitous ceramic-coated counterpart.

Check for Its Stovetop and Oven Compatibility

Check for Its Stovetop and Oven Compatibility

Ceramic cookware isn’t one-size-fits-all, and while most of them can be used for gas stoves, there are some models that cannot be used for induction stoves. In this regard, you want to check if your cookware is compatible with your stovetop.

The same goes for ovens, as some ceramics are not ideal for oven use. This is especially true for ceramic-coated, which is not ideal for extremely high temperatures lest the coating breaks down. Its temperature tolerance can also vary anywhere from 400 to 800 F.

On the other hand, pure ceramics can almost always be used in baking. Think ceramic baking dishes like ramekins and casserole dishes.

Pick Between a Single Piece or Full Set

Pick Between a Single Piece or Full Set

Cookware can be purchased as a solo piece or a full set. The same can be said for ceramic cookware – it could come in saucepans, frying pans, and casserole pots. Think about what techniques you are going to use it for. Are you making stews and soups? Do you just want a frying pan alternative?

There are different pans for different cooking jobs, and if you are going to be quite busy in the kitchen, then you could go for a full set. A set is also great if you are looking for a set to help you get started in the kitchen.

On the other hand, if the most you are going to use ceramic cookware is for frying purposes, then you could get away with only purchasing a solitary pan. It is also advisable, especially if your kitchen is already fully equipped.

How to Wash Ceramic Cookware

Dealing with burnt food? Do not just scrub it off. Take a cue from Katie and use this natural cleaning hack to remove food stains without damaging your ceramic cookware. This also applies to any delicate cookware you have such as porcelain and enamel-coated ones!

What You'll Need:

  • Soft towel/washcloth
  • Baking soda
  • Coarse salt

Steps:

  1. After cooking, remove the food - this includes any burnt bits and pieces. Place the dirty pan back on the stove and pour water.
  2. Set it to medium-high heat and sprinkle with baking soda when the water starts simmering. Let it simmer for 1 minute.
  3. Turn off the heat and gently scrape with a wooden spoon. Do not use metal as it could scratch your cookware, especially if it is ceramic coated only. Carefully rinse with warm water. You might notice there are still food stains, not to worry, as there is a spot treatment for that. But it is important you remove them as the buildup reduces your cookware's non-stick performance.
  4. To remove food stains, dampen your pan with water. Make a paste using 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water.
  5. Add the paste to the pan and use a soft towel to carefully scrub the stains. For the more stubborn stains, you can add coarse salt.
  6. After scrubbing, wash off your pan in warm, soapy water. And you're done!
