10 Best Condensed Milks in the Philippines 2021 (Alaska, Nature's Charm, and More)

We Filipinos have this habit of eating desserts after meals as panghimagas or something to balance the palate, the reason why we always have a plate of sweets served on the table. And for us, who are notorious for loving desserts, it is essential to always stock our pantry up with condensed milk, one of the staple ingredients you’ll find in many confections.

This condiment is a vital ingredient when preparing our all-time favorite desserts, such as fruit salad, leche flan, and buko pandan. It is responsible for that sweet, creamy, and milky taste that gets you hooked and keeps you coming back for more. To help you figure out which condensed milk to buy, we compiled some guides and recommendations for you!

The Difference Between Condensada, Evaporada, and All-Purpose Cream

The Difference Between Condensada, Evaporada, and All-Purpose Cream

Wondering if it's condensada, evaporada, or all-purpose cream that you need for that dessert you're making? Allow us to give you a quick rundown of the differences between these three!

Condensed milk is made with regular milk that has undergone a process to remove most of its water content. It has also been added a vast amount of sugar responsible for its sweet taste. It has a super thick and sweet consistency that goes well with sweet desserts.

The Difference Between Condensada, Evaporada, and All-Purpose Cream

On the other hand, evaporated milk is the unsweetened version of condensed milk. It went straight to packaging after the evaporation process and contains no added sugar content. It has a creamy texture and taste that goes well with sweet and savory dishes like sopas.

Meanwhile, all-purpose cream is a pasteurized all-around cream that you can use in limitless ways. It has a pourable consistency when left warm but can also be used as a frosting when chilled. It can provide additional "linamnam" to your specialties.

How to Choose a Condensed Milk - Buying Guide

Condensed milks vary from one another in terms of many things. Take a look at these points you should consider when purchasing condensed milk for your summer desserts.

Consider Flavored Condensed Milks for Added Taste

Consider Flavored Condensed Milks for Added Taste

Aside from the regular unflavored condensed milk, there are also packs of various flavored condensed milk that you can add to your grocery carts. They have distinct flavor profiles that are perfect if you wish to put some twist on your regular desserts.

Some of the flavors you can score include Buko Pandan, Ube, Melon, Mango, and Chocolate. These contain the same sweet and milky goodness of regular condensed milk but with an added taste.

You can also use them to prepare flavor-specific desserts like buko pandan salad and ube halaya easier; as with these, you can skip the additional flavorings.

Choose Among Different Packagings

Condensed milk can come in varying types of packaging. When choosing which one you should add to your virtual grocery cart, it is important to gauge which packaging would work better for your purpose and budget.

Cans Are Appropriate for Immediate Use

Cans Are Appropriate for Immediate Use

The majority of commercially available condensed milk is packed in cans, either in regular or easy-open cans. Although canned condensed milk has a long shelf life, it is best consumed within a week only once opened. Hence, they are your best pick for single and immediate consumption.

It is ideal to use them on desserts that require a vast portion of condensed milk like fruit salads than in ones that would need mere drizzles as this packaging is harder to store for next use.

Control Portions With Doypack Pouch

Control Portions With Doypack Pouch

If you're preparing a dessert that only requires a few drizzles of condensed milk or simply want to make your halo-halo sweeter, it is best to get one that comes in a resealable pack. This packaging will allow you to use the condensed milk in smaller portions at home or even outside as it does not require any additional tools to open it.

It would just usually come with a lid or cap that you can easily open and close. After using, you can simply put back the lid or cap to retain the milk's quality without having to repack it in another container to keep it fresh.

Tetra Packs Are More Budget-Friendly

Tetra Packs Are More Budget-Friendly

Another packaging you can go for is the tetra pack; condensed milk in this type of packaging is less costly than its canned counterparts. Thus, it is ideal when you’re making huge-scale desserts for fiestas or holidays as it will let you save a hefty amount of money.

It also offers a generally long shelf life. However, it is impossible to reseal it to its vacuum state once opened. Hence, there might be a need to repack the content to prevent it from spilling and being contaminated.

Consider Vegan-Friendly Condensed Milks If You’re Avoiding Dairy

Consider Vegan-Friendly Condensed Milks If You’re Avoiding Dairy

When you're shopping for condensed milk, make it a habit to read the label and ingredients to look out for possible allergens or content you might want to avoid. Since it's a dairy product, it would contain ingredients that may not go well with vegan and lactose-intolerant people.

Thankfully, there is an alternative you can opt for. Coconut condensed milk is an excellent non-dairy option that you can use in your favorite desserts. It has the same sweet, creamy, and milky taste that regular condensed milk has, but it is vegan, gluten-free, and lactose-free - making a good pick for those who wish to avoid dairy.

Perfect the Classic and All-Time Favorite Leche Flan

Perfect the Classic and All-Time Favorite Leche Flan

When we speak of desserts, it is impossible not to find leche flan on the list. It is easily one of Filipinos' favorite desserts. This heavenly dessert is characterized by its pudding-like texture with notes of caramel and milk. Below, Panlasang Pinoy shares a Leche Flan recipe that you can easily make for your family!

What You'll Need:

  • 10 pieces eggs
  • 1 can condensed milk
  • 1 cup fresh milk or evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Procedure:

  1. Separate the yolk from the egg white and collect the egg yolks that will be used for the leche flan
  2. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks until it becomes a little foamy.
  3. Add condensed milk to the mixture and continue mixing thoroughly.
  4. Afterward, mix in the fresh milk and vanilla extract. Be sure to whisk until all ingredients blend well.
  5. Get the mold or llanera and put it on top of the stove. Heat the llanera on low fire, then fill it with sugar to caramelize it.
  6. Spread the sugar evenly to get a full-coverage of the caramelized sugar. Once the sugar has turned into a liquid consistency and brownish color, it's done. Be careful of burning it though!
  7. Wait for at least 5 minutes, then pour the egg and milk mixture onto the mold containing the caramelized sugar.
  8. Steam it for 30-35 minutes. Be sure to cover the top of the mold; even a sheet of aluminum foil would do.
  9. After steaming, let it cool down for a bit, then refrigerate. Once chilled, it is ready for serving! Enjoy!
