10 Best Sunscreens for Sensitive Skin in the Philippines 2022 | Buying Guide Reviewed By Dermatologist

Experts say that sunscreen is a must-have for our skincare routine. Knowing that the Philippines is a tropical country where we have hot and humid weather all year round, it is important to put on sunscreen every day. No matter what time we go out and even on cloudy days, the UV rays can still penetrate our skin. Having sensitive skin is quite difficult, especially when choosing a product for everyday use.

So, you might be wondering how you'll protect your skin from the harmful UV rays without irritating it. In this article, we present a useful buying guide and recommendations to help you select the best sunscreen that will be compatible with your skin type. We also reached out to dermatologist Dr. Katrina Erika Habaluyas Luz to share her tips and comments regarding sunscreens for sensitive skin!

How to Choose a Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin - Buying Guide

On store shelves and even online, you may be presented with numerous options. However, which one is the best for your sensitive skin? This buying guide will give you ideas on how to choose the product that will protect and take care of your skin from irritation and harmful UV rays.

Gel, Cream, Spray: Select Your Formula Type

Remember to choose a formula that is compatible with your skin and makes you feel comfortable when worn. Sunscreens come in gel, cream, and spray mist forms which differ when applied to the skin.

Gel Formulas for Oily Skin

Gel Formulas for Oily Skin

Gel sunscreens are ideal for those with oily skin. They are easily absorbed by the skin when applied and give a non-greasy, matte finish. Plus, they are perfect to wear underneath makeup because of the lightweight feeling that they give.

They are also suitable for acne-prone skin because gel formulas are usually non-comedogenic which means they are oil-free and won’t block your pores. This type of sunscreen offers great broad-spectrum sun protection for your sensitive skin.

Sunscreen is a key part of any skin care regimen regardless of skin type. The key is choosing the right one for your skin. Now, the formulation of a sunscreen is important as it determines whether or not you like how it feels on your skin, and consequently, whether or not you will apply it consistently.

For oily and/or acne-prone skin, a gel sunscreen is a good choice. Gel sunscreens are more lightweight and don't leave that sticky feeling.

As for comedogenicity, the term "non-comedogenic" is more marketing than anything. Comedogenicity is a spectrum, and it comes down to the overall formulation of the product. So if a product is labeled "non-comedogenic," there are limitations to that claim and what it means!

Hydrate Your Dry Skin With a Cream-Based Sunscreen

Hydrate Your Dry Skin With a Cream-Based Sunscreen

Cream-based sunscreens include hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, perfect for those who have dry skin. This will make your skin feel moisturized and firmer for a younger-looking you.

It offers more protection because it gives you full coverage when applied. The best time to use this sunscreen is before going out, so make sure that you have already applied it to your skin before heading out.

Dry skin types would benefit from a cream-based sunscreen. Creams are thicker and greasier than lotions or gels, but they make a good choice, especially for the face. Creams actually make ideal sunscreens since the most effective active ingredients can be easily incorporated into the oil phase of the emulsion. Another plus is that these sunscreens usually add moisturizing ingredients too!

A Sunscreen Spray Is Easy-to-Use

A Sunscreen Spray Is Easy-to-Use

Sunscreen sprays are convenient. They are ideal for those who want a quick and easy way of applying this product. If you have kids with you, then you can opt for spray-type sunscreens since they take less time to apply.

However, be careful when using them around children because they might accidentally inhale the fumes during application. To prevent such accidents, it is advisable to spray the sunscreen onto your hands and then rub it onto your child’s skin and face instead.

Spray sunscreens are convenient given their ease of application. However, the problem with them is it is usually applied incorrectly and inadequately. More often than not, around half of it is sprayed elsewhere instead of onto your skin!

The proper way to apply spray sunscreens is by making four passes back and forth on each area of skin. Then, rub the spray evenly on the skin. Personally, if spray sunscreens are all you have, then you're better off spraying it on your hands first and then rub it onto your skin.

Check the Label : Go for Inorganic Filter and Avoid Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, and Octocrylene

Check the Label : Go for Inorganic Filter and Avoid Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, and Octocrylene

According to a study, a sunscreen with an inorganic filter is a group of mineral oxides such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide found on the product. They are referred to as physical filters that reflect, scatter, and refract UV rays and are much safer to use.

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are both great broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF ingredients that are gentle and have little to no risk for sensitive skin. It protects the skin from both UVA and UVB rays so they wouldn't penetrate the skin.

On the other hand, oxybenzone and avobenzone are both types of benzophenone that are known to penetrate the skin and increase free radicals on the skin. Similarly, octocrylene is an ingredient that may cause allergies to sensitive skin and increase the number of harmful substances on the body.

Sunscreens can be divided into two types - physical/ mineral/ inorganic sunscreens vs. chemical/ organic sunscreens.

Physical or inorganic sunscreens act as a shield - sitting on the surface of your skin and reflecting or scattering visible, UV, and infrared radiation over a broad spectrum. Active ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
  • Pros: less irritating making it a good choice for children, pregnant mothers, and those with sensitive skin.
  • Cons: may leave a white cast.

Chemical or organic sunscreens act like a sponge that absorbs the sun’s rays. Ingredients typically include para-aminobenzoic acid, oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate.
  • Pros: easier to rub into the skin without leaving that white cast.
  • Cons: higher reports of allergic reaction for some people

Remember, the best sunscreen, though, is one that you actually use consistently!

Go for a Sunscreen With a Minimum of SPF30 and a High PA Value

Go for a Sunscreen With a Minimum of SPF30 and a High PA Value

When purchasing sun care products, dermatologists recommend going for one with a Sun Protection Factor or SPF of at least 30. The number of SPF tells you how long before the UV rays would penetrate and potentially damage your skin.

For example, if you have an SPF30 product, then it would take 30 minutes to burn your skin; however, it would only allow 3 percent of the UV rays to hit your skin. Additionally, the PA stands for Protection Grade of UVA which represents protection from UVA rays. The more pulse signs you see, the greater the protection.

Dr. Katrina Luz
Dermatologist, Educator, and Digital Creator
Dr. Katrina Luz

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It basically measures protection against erythema (or redness) after exposure to the sun. Now, you would need at least an SPF 30 as this would filter ~97% of UVB rays. If you can get one with SPF 50, even better, as it can filter ~98% of UVB rays.

But then how about UVA? A broad-spectrum sunscreen typically would include an additional rating for UVA such as PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) or PA (look for the PA+, PA++, or PA+++) on the label.

Remember, though, the amount of sunscreen specified for SPF testing is 2mg/cm2, equal to 30ml of sunscreen to cover the entire body surface. So if you didn't apply the right amount of sunscreen, you definitely would not be as protected as you think!

Choose a Sunscreen With a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Choose a Sunscreen With a Broad-Spectrum Protection

Natural sunlight has two types of harmful rays: UVA and UVB rays. These two have different impacts on your skin, so you must choose a sunscreen that can protect you from both of these.

UVA rays, also known as aging rays, are absorbed by the dermis which usually causes age spots, wrinkles, and other skin problems. On the other hand, UVB rays are absorbed by the epidermis which primarily causes sunburn.

Dr. Katrina Luz
Dermatologist, Educator, and Digital Creator
Dr. Katrina Luz

Sunscreens protect the skin by preventing and minimizing the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Now, UV radiation has a broad spectrum ranging from 40 to 400nm and is divided into different portions. Particularly important for us are UVB (290–320) and UVA (320–400nm).

UVB and UVA can lead to sunburns, photoaging, and even skin cancer. So, make sure you choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen as it is able to filter UV radiation from both the UVA and UVB portions.

Opt for a Mineral Sunscreen for Your Sensitive Skin

Opt for a Mineral Sunscreen for Your Sensitive Skin

Mineral, sometimes called physical sunscreens, are the best picks for your precious skin. They contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are both natural minerals that can block UVA and UVB rays and prevent them from being absorbed by your skin.

According to Dr. Mraz Robinson, this combination can physically block harmful UV rays by forming a barrier that sits on top of your skin. Plus, this barrier helps UV rays bounce off from the skin to prevent damage.

As dermatologists, we recognize that people with sensitive skin need effective sun protection that is also gentle to their skin.

Usually, patients will be better off with a physical or mineral sunscreen - look for ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these provide balanced UVA and UVB protection that is photostable while also being very mild to the skin.

How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

After checking out our Top 10 recommended products for sensitive skin, here are some tips on how to properly apply sunscreen by Harris Dermatology.

  1. Sunscreen should be used daily. Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen on a daily basis because the majority of sun exposure is casual and incidental.
  2.  Use the right amount of sunscreen for better protection. Spread a thick tablespoon of sunscreen for the face and about two ounces for the body.
  3. For effective sunscreen protection, apply it 20 minutes before going out so that your skin would be able to absorb the formulation properly.
  4. Put on your sunscreen first, then your moisturizer, especially if you have dry skin.
  5. Reapply sunscreen at appropriate intervals. It is important to reapply the sunscreen every two hours especially if you're doing outdoor activities such as swimming.
  6. Use cosmetics which contain SPF. Buying cosmetics that also have SPF and layering them with sunscreen can increase sun protection.

Once you've found the right sunscreen, actually apply it and correctly too!

Let's start with the correct amount. Ideally, 2.0 mg per square centimeter of skin should be applied. For easy reference, that's equivalent to two fingerbreadths just for the face.

As for the application, it's important to slather it on, making sure that all surfaces are covered. Don't forget the eyelids and the ears too!

Dr. Katrina shares her knowledge even more in the section below! We asked her some of the frequently asked questions online, and here are her answers!

Does Reapplying Sunscreen Apply to Those With Sensitive Skin Too?

Does Reapplying Sunscreen Apply to Those With Sensitive Skin Too?

Absolutely! Reapplication of sunscreen is ideally every 2 hours and immediately after sweating, swimming, toweling off, or bathing. This makes up for the possibly inadequate application of sunscreen the first time around and also provides coverage for sunscreen that may have been wiped off or removed by sweating.

Can You Skip Moisturizer If You Apply Sunscreen Anyway?

Can You Skip Moisturizer If You Apply Sunscreen Anyway?

Usually, if it's in the morning and people don't like having too many layers on their skin, I advise them that it's ok to skip the moisturizer and go straight to sunscreen. Then at night, that's when they can apply the moisturizer instead.

Is It Okay to Use Sunscreen for Kids if You Have Sensitive Skin?

Is It Okay to Use Sunscreen for Kids if You Have Sensitive Skin?

Sunscreen is a must regardless of skin type. Available evidence shows that sunburns are actually more commonly seen in young people with sensitive skin. So if kids have sensitive skin, then all the more they would need protection from the harmful rays of the sun.

The key would be finding the right one. In general, mineral or physical sunscreens tend to be less irritating. You can also consult your board-certified dermatologist of choice for help in choosing a good sunscreen for your skin.
