How to Choose a Japanese Snack – Buying Guide

Choosing snacks with labels in a different language can be tricky. If you're unfamiliar with Japanese snacks, you might find yourself lost and confused in the snack aisle, or worse, you might end up buying the wrong food item. To prevent this from happening, read our buying guide below to know more about the different types of Japanese snacks.

Select the Type of Snack You Need

In any supermarket or convenience store, you'll be sure to find a wide variety of snacks to choose from. If you're still undecided about which to buy, the first step is always to determine what type of snack you need.

Chips, Biscuits, and Crackers Are Perfect Snacks Between Meals

Chips, Biscuits, and Crackers Are Perfect Snacks Between Meals

Go for light Japanese snacks such as biscuits, chips, and crackers if you prefer to eat something not too filling. These snacks have a wide range of flavors, from savory to sweet, and they are usually stored in travel-friendly, air-tight packaging to maintain their crispness.

Light snacks are perfect for eating in between meals, and they can also be consumed during school and work breaks, road trips, and even on movie nights and pool parties with friends and family.

Pick Dried Fruits and Nuts For a Healthy Snack

If you’re health-conscious, Japanese snacks also offer a selection of guilt-free snacks made from natural and healthy ingredients. These ingredients include dried fruits, salted nuts, edamame or soybeans, and protein bars which are filling and nutritious enough to serve as a substitute for meals.

Supermarkets and convenience stores selling Japanese food are saturated with a wide variety of snacks that have different ingredients and nutritional content. So, if you want to stay fit and healthy while also enjoying your snacks, try to pick the healthier options that are available.

Choose Between Sweet and Savory

Japanese snacks can come in many different flavors but most are either sweet or salty. No matter which one you'll pick, you'll surely have many snacks to choose from!

Try Seaweed and Soy Flavored Savory Snacks

Try Seaweed and Soy Flavored Savory Snacks

Flavors such as seaweed, soy sauce, and wasabi are some of the many distinct Japanese flavors. They can be found in sushi and ramen, where they have an earthy and umami flavor that adds a savory kick to any Japanese snack.

Aside from these, other ingredients include sesame and seafood flavors which are already common in many Asian cuisines. Overall, those ingredients are great for seasoning different Japanese dishes, and they are also perfect as flavorings in chips, biscuits, and crackers.

Consider Sugar-Based Snacks and Ice Cream for Sweetness

If you have a sweet tooth, then Japanese candies and chocolates are for you. Japan offers a spin to the classic sweet chocolate as it incorporates flavors like matcha and cherry blossoms to make interesting combinations. Other Japanese sweet treats are mochis and ice creams, which are usually paired with red bean or matcha to give it a uniquely Japanese flavor.

Chances are, you can already find Yakult in supermarkets and convenience stores, or you’re already familiar with it as it is a well-known probiotic drink among us Filipinos. Upgrade Your Instant Ramen

If you enjoy making yourself a bowl of instant ramen, there is a hack that will help your instant noodles taste like real ramen! Check out this recipe from the Youtube channel Way of Ramen and try it for yourself.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tsp grated garlic
  • 3 tbsp sesame seeds and sesame oil
  • half tsp chili bean sauce
  • green onion
  • 60g ground pork
  • 100ml milk

  1. First, grind 3 tablespoons of sesame seeds using a mortar and pestle, a grinder, or a food processor.
  2. Then, chop up some green onions however you like them.
  3. For the cooking part, heat up some sesame oil and then add 60g of ground pork (or beef) in a small pot.
  4. Add the grated garlic and ginger into the pot and half a teaspoon of chili bean sauce.
  5. After mixing it and cooking the pork through, add 200ml of water and wait for it to simmer.
  6. Once it is simmering, add the instant noodles for about a minute and a half or until they just start to separate.
  7. If the noodles have separated, mix in 100ml of milk and 100ml of water and add the ground sesame seeds.
  8. Taste the broth to know how salty it is, and add the soup packet from the instant noodles according to your preference.
  9. Mix everything up and cook the noodles up to your liking.
  10. After that, you can plate your upgraded ramen. Put the noodles first in the bowl and then pour the soup over it, so the ground meat lands on top. Add the green onions and chili oil if you like it spicy.

The ingredients are simple, and the cooking time is quick, so no need to worry about the effort that you need to upgrade your ramen. Try this recipe and enjoy your old instant noodles with a new twist!
