  1. Hone and sharpen them regularly. After several uses, it is better to keep the edge sharp by sharpening and honing it. Honing is done through honing steel so it's best to invest in one. Sharpening can be a bit complicated when using a sharpening stone or if you're not up to the task, you can have it sent to a professional.
  2. Wash them after every use. While most knives are made of carbon or stainless steel materials and might require less maintenance than other materials, yet leaving them unwashed for long periods might erode or destroy the blade. Any liquid, acid, or chemicals from the food could stain the surface or develop rust over time.
  3. Do not put them in a dishwasher. Washing knives by hand is the most ideal way to clean them. For the simple reason that a person's hand is much gentler than a motor-driven dishwasher. Aside from that, the person washing the knives could see trapped food particles and can focus on removing them.

  4. Use your countertop as a cutting board. The best way to blunt your knife faster is to use it on any surface other than the cutting board. Clashing with the granite or marble countertop not only dulls it but could pose accidents to the user, where the blade might slip and cut.
