What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is also known by its other names, hyaluronan, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, and sodium hyaluronate, which is in salt form and more stable. It is one of the much raved-about ingredients in skincare, so much so that it becomes oversimplified. Hence, misconceptions abound about what it does and its benefits.

Despite its name, it is not an acid but a sugar molecule naturally occurring in our body where it traps water and acts as a cushion. It keeps skin hydrated, joints lubricated, and aids in wound healing. In skincare, it is classified as a humectant as it pulls water from the nearest source and draws it to the surface of the skin, giving it a plumped-up and youthful appearance.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

It is safe for all skin types as it is non-irritating and can be paired with a number of skincare ingredients as well. It can be found in most skincare items, with the most popular being serums, sheet masks, and moisturizers.

However great as this acid may be, this doesn’t mean you should just slather it all over. It turns out you can have too much of a good thing, as excessive use can make skin drier in the long run. Its effects are more for short-term benefit.

This is similar to licking your lips only to realize it is drier later on. This is why it needs to be sealed in with a moisturizer or an occlusive after applying the serum to prevent moisture loss. That being said, they are great for when you have to attend an event, gathering, or if you want to look extra fine for your zoom meeting!

Youthful skin retains its turgor and elasticity, for the most part, due to its high water content. However, with age and daily exposure to external insults, our skin naturally loses its moisture content. The key molecule involved in skin moisture is actually hyaluronic acid, given its unique capacity in holding water.

Hyaluronic acid is a ubiquitous glycosaminoglycan found in the skin amongst other organs (eyes, joints) that is naturally produced by our bodies. Not only does it act as a humectant that hydrates the skin through its water-binding capacity, but it also acts as an antioxidant and improves skin barrier function.

How to Choose a Hyaluronic Acid Serum - Buying Guide

Just like any other skincare ingredient, hyaluronic acid has both good and bad sides. And while it is not as irritating as acids or retinol, this doesn't mean going overboard with the application. Here's what to keep in mind before buying a hyaluronic acid serum.

Determine a Base Suited for Your Skin Type

Determine a Base Suited for Your Skin Type

Serums can come in different formulations, so you have to take into consideration your skin type to determine what type works best for you. Part of why skincare works is consistency, so you should stick to a formulation that you can actually adhere to

If you have oily skin, then a gel or water-based serum would work well for you. This is because they are lightweight and not as likely to leave a sticky residue, so your face won't feel heavy.

On the other hand, those whose skin is on the drier side may benefit more from cream or oil-based serums. These feel more nourishing on your skin, so it's not as likely to feel chalky.

Serums are skincare products containing a high volume of active ingredients that target a specific concern or a combination of them. Not all serums are created equal. They would differ in terms of texture, percentage of actives, and overall formulation (especially if it contains more than one active ingredient). The best thing would be to identify your skin type and your skin concerns first so that the choice of the serum would best cater to those.

Size Matters - Take Note of the Molecular Size

Size Matters - Take Note of the Molecular Size

Topical hyaluronic acid can contain high molecular and low molecular weights, sometimes even a combination of both. This refers to the size they are broken down into and the type of hyaluronic acid used. It is usually indicated in the description or ingredients list, so it pays to read the label.

Hyaluronic acid has a large molecular weight, so it needs to be hydrolyzed to minimize its size. High molecular hyaluronic acid tends to sit on top like a film, and its effects do not last as long. However, it has been noted to have an anti-inflammatory effect. And its effects are more on instant plumping and hydration.

Sodium hyaluronate, which is derived from hyaluronic acid, has smaller fragments. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can penetrate deeper into the skin’s structure for maximum rehydration. However, it can be quite inflammatory for some and is more expensive.

Dermatologist, Educator, and Digital Creator
Dr. Katrina Luz

Both high molecular weight HA and low molecular weight HA function as humectants, and thus, hydrate the skin given its water-holding capacity. In general, high molecular weight hyaluronic acid will not be able to penetrate into the skin as deep compared to low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (e.g. sodium hyaluronate).

However, some studies have shown that the low molecular weight HAs may be a bit controversial as they have shown some pro-inflammatory properties. More studies definitely need to be conducted in this regard. The best thing to do is to patch test and see how your skin reacts to it!

A Look at the Percentage – More Isn’t Always Better

A Look at the Percentage – More Isn’t Always Better

You might think that because it is a plumping and hydrating ingredient, the more, the merrier, but that is not always the case. It is better to go for smaller percentages. This means forgoing serums that claim to advertise 75% or 99% hyaluronic acid.

The recommended percentage for over-the-counter products is at 1% - 2%. It may sound weird, but too much can make your skin drier. Excessive levels of humectants in moisturizers will dry out your skin if used in abundance and lead to water loss. If you’re not quite ready to take that leap, you can go for 0.2% to 0.5% hyaluronic acid serums.

Dr. Katrina Luz

More is not always better. While other actives boast of a higher percentage in order to deliver their effects, the opposite is true for hyaluronic acid. Typically, over-the-counter hyaluronic acid products range between 1-2%. In fact, some journals indicate that anything more than 1% may have the opposite effect on your skin, almost like a sponge drawing moisture away rather than replenishing it.

Check for Other Ingredients for Added Benefits

Check for Other Ingredients for Added Benefits

The great news is hyaluronic acid is easy to pair with skincare products as it goes well with nearly anything! You could look at other ingredients for added benefits into your serum.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and it is great for protecting skin against free radicals brought about by environmental damage. It is also helpful for combatting dark circles and spots!

Check for Other Ingredients for Added Benefits

Niacinamide is also another ingredient that works well with hyaluronic acid. It boosts collagen production and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. When combined with hyaluronic acid, it can complement the other’s hydrating effects.

In moisturizers, you also want to look for occlusive ingredients such as shea and cocoa butter, as they can seal your skin barrier and prevent moisture loss when coupled with hyaluronic acid.

Dermatologist, Educator, and Digital Creator
Dr. Katrina Luz
Hyaluronic acid is generally great to pair with other ingredients:
  • Hyaluronic acid + ceramides make a great combo for barrier repair
  • Hyaluronic acid + niacinamide is also a good combo for skin barrier repair
  • Hyaluronic acid + retinol makes a great combo for anti-aging

These pairings increase the beneficial effects that can be derived from them. Make sure, though, to consider your skin type, skin concern, and of course, tolerance to these ingredients.

Learn to Apply a Hyaluronic Acid Serum With Dr. Dray

Dermatologist and YouTuber Dr. Dray demonstrates how to layer hyaluronic acid serums so that you make the most of them! She further notes that most products often contain hyaluronic acid, so you can apply it once a day, preferably at night.

1. Cleanse Skin

1. Cleanse Skin

Before applying skincare, the first thing you want to do is make sure your skin is thoroughly cleansed. Dr. Dray recommends double cleansing to remove traces of makeup, oil, and dirt that have accumulated throughout the day.

An oil-based cleansing balm or cleansing oil is ideal for the first cleanse to break up skincare products like makeup and sunscreen. Then, follow it up with a gentle cleanser.

Cleansing the skin is an essential part of any skincare routine. It is the first step of any solid skincare routine that enables you to get rid of the dirt, oil, even makeup that has accumulated on your face.

2. Apply Hyaluronic Acid Serum

2. Apply Hyaluronic Acid Serum

After cleansing, apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin for increased water bonding. You don't need to use a lot, just a thin film will suffice. Remember that less is more when it comes to this ingredient.

You could apply it to your entire face or to targeted areas such as under the eyes. This delivers more focused hydration to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and overall skin texture. It also smoothens skin.

A skincare routine is very personal! There are so many ways that you can use a hyaluronic acid serum in your routine. Here are some ways you can explore:
  1. Apply on damp skin
  2. Mix with other actives
  3. Apply before a moisturizer

Try it out and do what works for your skin!

3. Moisturize

3. Moisturize

Go for a moisturizer with occlusive ingredients such as silicone for oily skin and shea butter and petrolatum for dry skin after using hyaluronic acid to prevent transepidermal water loss. While hyaluronic acid holds onto water, it doesn't hold it there indefinitely.

If there is no topcoat seal, the water it's holding onto the top surface of your skin will start to evaporate, and it will end up pulling more water out of your skin and drying it out. This is especially true if you live in drier climates.

If using the serum during the day, you can use sunscreen twice instead, as some sunscreen formulas can clump up when combined with the serum and moisturizer. So, the first layer will act as an occlusive, while the second layer is the actual sunscreen part.

What most people forget is that in order to achieve hydration in the skin, a blend of humectants or even other types of moisturizers is key. So even if you have hyaluronic acid, don't forget to incorporate other great humectants such as glycerin, glycols, or urea, to name a few. Another great option is to apply an occlusive type of moisturizer to prevent moisture loss in the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Katrina Luz

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Katrina Luz

Learn more about hyaluronic acid serums below as Dr. Katrina answers the web's most asked questions.

When to Use Hyaluronic Acid Serum?

Hyaluronic acid serum can be added to your skincare routine if you want to give your skin that extra boost of hydration. But remember, the effects of topical hyaluronic acid on the skin are only temporary. Thus, if you have an event to attend or a Zoom meeting, then yes, a hyaluronic acid serum may be a good choice to give you that instant plump, dewy skin look!

Is It Okay If All the Skincare Products in the Routine Contain Hyaluronic Acid?

The answer is it depends. If you read the ingredient label of your skincare products, you would be surprised by how so many of them actually contain hyaluronic acid. But more is not always better, so if you can keep the products containing hyaluronic acid to a minimum, the better.

Since Hyaluronic Acid Itself Is Moisturizing, Can You Skip Moisturizer?

No, skipping moisturizing is not the way to go here. Although hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which is one of the types of moisturizers, your skin will benefit more if you seal it in with an occlusive type moisturizer after.

More Tips From Dr. Katrina Luz

Hyaluronic acid has been a trending ingredient over the past few years. It is a good option and definitely has its benefits. However, it's good to also keep in mind that it is not the holy grail for anti-aging, and neither is it compatible with everyone. So at the end of the day, listen to your skin!

Finish Your Skincare Routine With a Moisturizer

Finish Your Skincare Routine With a Moisturizer

In any skincare routine, it is best to top it off with a moisturizer to seal in all the goodness you have applied to your face. Check out these moisturizers to pair with hyaluronic acid serums! There is a moisturizer for dry, oily, or acne-prone skin!

Summary

If you're looking for hydrated and plump skin, look no further than a hyaluronic acid serum. It can help in boosting your skin’s appearance, especially if your skin is in need of a pick-me-up. Despite its benefits, hyaluronic acid is not the cure-all for your skin, and excessive use can do more harm than good. So make sure to use it mindfully!
