10 Best Natural Shampoos in the Philippines 2021 - Buying Guide Reviewed By Dermatologist

Finding the perfect shampoo goes beyond what it does for your hair. The formulation needs to go deep into the hair roots to bring out a better and healthier shine. Just like the skin, the scalp can also absorb nutrients and chemicals present in shampoo, which then go through the bloodstream. This makes natural shampoos with less harmful chemicals and more organic ingredients the better choice.

Our hair is influenced by genetics, but exposure to heat, sunlight, and dyes can damage and weaken it. Hair does grow back, and even the driest and most brittle hair strands will eventually be replaced, but using the right natural shampoo can revitalize your current hair and bring back your crowning glory. Check out the buying guide with comments and tips from board-certified dermatologist Dr. Aznaida L. Tawagon-Pandapatan to guide you on your purchase!

Benefits of Natural Shampoos

Benefits of Natural Shampoos

Brands often use words like natural and organic to market their products, but what do natural shampoos really mean? What makes natural shampoos special are the organic ingredients that impart cleansing, moisturizing, and enhancing properties. These formulations also depend on these ingredients to impart the scent to the shampoo instead of relying on artificial perfumes.

The most common natural additives include essential oils, fruit extracts, and botanicals.  You might also still find some chemicals that lengthen the product's shelf life and improve the stability of the formulation. However, these chemicals can also be plant-sourced, making them natural too! So, don’t fret when you see ingredients such as stearyl alcohol and citric acid in a natural shampoo.

For now, "natural shampoos" are those that contain "ingredients from nature" such as essential oils, and extracts from fruits, vegetables, and herbs. But we have to remember that not all "natural" are good or beneficial for us. For example, one of the most common allergens and irritants are the essential oils and fruit extracts, which all come from natural ingredients. For those who are sensitive to these natural ingredients, it is advisable to avoid "natural" shampoos.

How to Choose a Natural Shampoo - Buying Guide

Don’t be fooled by packaging. It's better to be informed of the type of care your locks need before taking your pick. Read further below to learn about the points to consider.

Look for a Natural Shampoo Based on Your Hair’s Needs

Depending on your hair’s exposure to factors like heat and chemicals, it may suffer from damage like dryness, hair fall, and formation of dandruff. Don't worry as it's not too late to save your hair with shampoos that contain the ingredients we’ve listed below.

Argan Oil to Bring Back Nourishment to Dry Hair

Argan Oil to Bring Back Nourishment to Dry Hair

The harsh summer heat in the country can cause dryness of both your skin and your hair. If increasing your water intake isn’t enough to keep your hair bouncy, you can resort to using moisturizing natural shampoos to bring back its fullness. This is also ideal to pack before hitting the beach, as salty or chlorinated water can cause your hair to become dry and frizzy.

Look for ingredients that are full of fatty acids and vitamins with hair-nourishing properties. Argan oil is commonly added to shampoos thanks to its high vitamin E, fatty acid, and antioxidant content, all of which contribute to the hair’s shine.

Dr. Aznaida

For those prone to dry hair or have damaged hair due to treatments and constant styling, look for moisturizing ingredients from shampoos. You may also opt for "shampoo with conditioner" formulations. Ingredients to look for that may help with dry and damaged hair are glycerine, argan oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.

Shea Butter and Coconut Oil to Protect Hair From Intense Heat From Styling

Shea Butter and Coconut Oil to Protect Hair From Intense Heat From Styling

Shea butter makes hair strong, healthy, and easy to style and manage. It also protects hair from intense heat, whether from the sun or from hot hair styling tools. Your hair may also benefit from shampoos that contain coconut oil because of their ability to protect against protein loss, which is the main component of hair.

Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

Shea butter and coconut oils are some of the most common moisturizing ingredients in shampoos. While they are innately good, the effects will still depend on the shampoo's formula. When using moisturizing shampoos, make sure to rinse adequately (to leave just enough amount of these on your scalp), and shampoo regularly to ensure declogging of the follicles daily.

Get an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Better Scalp Health

Get an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Better Scalp Health

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that is characterized by flaky and itchy skin. It is sometimes caused by serious skin complications like fungal infections, but it can also be due to the weather, stress levels, age, and the hair care products a person uses.

To quickly cure dandruff formation, and save yourself from a potentially embarrassing encounter, switch to anti-dandruff shampoos. Tea tree oil is a great, natural anti-dandruff ingredient found in many shampoos. It has antifungal properties that can address the cause of your dandruff. It can also calm down irritation, ideal if the constant itch is interfering with your day-to-day activities.

Dandruff is caused by multiple factors such as fungal infections, allergic reactions, irritations (from shampoos and conditioners), and even stress. You can try using shampoos with tea tree oil, but if you are allergic to it, try the conventional shampoos with zinc pyrithione. If dandruff persists, it is best to have it checked by a dermatologist.

Find a Hair Growth Enhancer to Counter Hair Fall

Find a Hair Growth Enhancer to Counter Hair Fall

Are you starting to worry about all the hair strands that fall off when you shower? Don’t panic, as this is part of the normal hair growth process, and losing hair only means that it’s making way for new ones. However, if you feel that your hair has gotten noticeably thinner, then you can opt to start using natural shampoos for hair growth.

Keep your eyes peeled for ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and rosemary oil. Aloe vera has long been used on the skin and is said to counter baldness. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that can reduce moisture loss of hair by protecting the hair shaft. Meanwhile, rosemary oil is known to stimulate the growth of new hair and prevent hair loss.

Hair shedding of up to 100 strands a day is still considered acceptable. It is part of the hair cycle. If you think that your hair sheds off more than usual, change your shampoo and conditioner to those containing moisturizing ingredients. If it persists, consult a Dermatologist for a more thorough examination of your hair and scalp.

Liquid or Bar: Decide What Type of Shampoo to Get

Using a certain type of shampoo can make a difference not just on your hair, but on the environment too! Learn about the benefits of using either a liquid or bar shampoo to help you make the best choice.

Go With a Liquid Shampoo for a Great Lather

Go With a Liquid Shampoo for a Great Lather

Before the popularity of shampoo bars, everybody used liquid shampoo. They are very accessible, as most supermarkets offer aisles worth of shampoo in every size and formulation possible. Since they lather up quickly, they are convenient to use, especially during the morning rush.

A downside to using liquid shampoo is the amount of trash each purchase produces. There are, however, ways to use liquid shampoo while cutting down on waste. You can get reusable bottles that you can refill to cut down on buying single-use plastics. You can also choose to buy larger sizes; this way, you get more shampoo without accumulating even more bottles.

Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

Aside from buying large bottles, also opt to buy refills. Refills are contained in softer and thinner plastic materials which relatively take smaller space in the trash and technically fewer years to biodegrade. In the Philippines, small shampoo sachets are widely being sold. Try to avoid buying these as much as possible. When traveling, use small refillable bottles instead of small plastic sachets.

Make an Eco-Friendly Choice by Going for Shampoo Bars

Make an Eco-Friendly Choice by Going for Shampoo Bars

For every bottle of shampoo you finish, you add another couple of grams of plastic waste into the ocean. It may not seem like much, but years of constant use add up, and soon, you would have thrown away tons of nonbiodegradable plastic trash. Luckily, more and more companies are providing a safe and effective alternative—shampoo bars.

A shampoo bar is generally made with the same ingredients as a regular liquid shampoo, minus the water content. A typical shampoo bottle is only good for approximately 30 washes, while a single shampoo bar is good for about 80 washes. Bars also make it convenient to pack for trips since they take up little space in your luggage, and you don’t have to worry about spills.

Dr. Aznaida

Shampoo bars are definitely better for the environment and for travel. But is it better for you? In choosing shampoo bars, also watch out for the ingredients that you may want to avoid, and look for the ingredients that will suit your needs. Look for good reviews from those who have tried them already. If they don't work for you, going back to liquid shampoos is alright.

Check Out Sulfate-Free Shampoos if You Have Colored or Dry Hair

Check Out Sulfate-Free Shampoos if You Have Colored or Dry Hair

Sulfates are a type of chemical, also known as surfactants, which are commonly present in cosmetic products like shampoos, facial washes, and soaps. So, what makes sulfates so bad? Well, sometimes they do the job of cleansing too well that they strip the hair of the oils it needs. They are also not recommended for people with sensitive skin, as too much sulfate can cause irritation.

By using shampoos without sulfate, your hair can retain its natural oils to keep it smooth and shiny. They are also ideal for people with colored hair, as they prolong the vibrance of the color and help in the retention of moisture to keep them from drying out. Sulfate-free shampoos are also suitable for all skin and hair types.

Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

Sulfates are very effective in removing oil and dirt from the scalp and hair. If you do not have any hair and scalp issues such as allergic reactions, persistent itchiness, dandruff, dyed hair, or irritations, then there is no need to avoid these sulfates. In fact, some of the sulfate-free alternatives also have the potential to cause allergic reactions and irritations. Therefore, if you really need to use sulfate-free shampoos, you'll have to try them first to find a formula that works for you.

Pick a Kid-Friendly Shampoo for Your Little Ones

Pick a Kid-Friendly Shampoo for Your Little Ones

Regular shampoos, even those made with all-natural ingredients, can still be harsh on your kids’ hair and scalp, so it's recommended to find formulations that are specially made for them. These are often made without potential eye irritants and make the shampoo tear-free, so you can let them shower on their own without worries.

They also come in fun and fruity scents to make kids’ bath times exciting. Do note that it is also important to observe your child’s skin reaction to the shampoo he or she uses, as some ingredients might trigger allergies or sensitivities. It would be best to consult with a dermatologist or their pediatrician if symptoms like itchiness and redness come up.

Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

For kids and infants, opt for shampoos made for their age, as these tend to contain milder ingredients. If your child does not have skin and scalp sensitivity issues, scented "natural" shampoos are great as these will make their bath time fun. For kids with skin issues such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, or contact dermatitis, it is best to opt for hypoallergenic and unscented shampoos and consult a dermatologist or a pediatrician to know which products are advisable for them.

Hair Care Dos and Don'ts: How to Shampoo Your Hair Properly

When it comes to shampoos, more doesn't always mean better, To attain smooth, soft, and manageable hair, follow these simple dos and don'ts from New Beauty.

Hair Care Dos

Hair Care Dos
  1. Wash your hair regularly. Shampooing is ideally done once a day to three times a week, depending on the oil build-up on your scalp, to rid your scalp of any dirt.
  2. Try using a detoxifying shampoo once a week for a deep clean.
  3. Make sure to shampoo all portions of your scalp to get an even and complete cleanse.
Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

With the tropical climate and the pollution levels in the Philippines, all of us will tend to sweat and produce oil and collect pollutants on our hair and scalp. It is thus advisable to shampoo at least once a day. The advantages of regular shampooing include preventing hair and scalp conditions such as fungal and bacterial infections. So definitely, do shampoo regularly.

Hair Care Don'ts

Hair Care Don'ts
  1. Don't go beyond three days without shampooing. This can create too much build-up of oil and your pores could get clogged.
  2. Don't use too much shampoo. Use only a coin size amount of shampoo as anything over it might be drying.
  3. Don't start shampooing from the ends. Start from the scalp and gently run your fingers through your hair to prevent matting and tangling.
Dr. Aznaida
Dermatologist
Dr. Aznaida

The amount of shampoo you use will depend on your hair volume and length. You may use more amount of shampoo if you have very long, thick hair. One trick is to dilute your shampoo with a bit of water in a plastic cup or "tabo," this way, you'll have more amount of shampoo to distribute all over, without using too much product.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Aznaida L. Tawagon-Pandapatan

Before you click that "add to cart" button, read some of Dr. Aznaida's tips below as she answers some of the internet's most asked questions!

Are Natural Shampoos Better for Your Hair and Scalp?

Natural shampoo ingredients such as tea tree oil, other essential oils, and plant extracts, just like natural strawberry or nuts or poison ivy, can have detrimental effects for those who are allergic to these "natural ingredients". If you have no sensitivity to the ingredients listed in a particular natural shampoo, then that natural shampoo is a good alternative to the conventional ones.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair WIth Natural Shampoo?

Given that you are not allergic to a particular natural shampoo, you may use it once a day, just like other regular shampoos. Personally, I prefer to shampoo at night, so I don't sleep with all the gunk and dirt, which may affect hair health and growth.

Is It Better to Pair Natural Shampoo With a Natural Conditioner?

If you are not allergic to a natural shampoo, pairing it with a natural conditioner is alright. Again, check the conditioner's ingredient list for possible allergens or irritants. Keep in mind to apply conditioners on the hair shafts and tips. Avoid applying to the scalp as this may cause scalp irritation or allergic reactions. Remember, hair conditioners are for the hair shafts, not for the scalp.

More Tips From Dr. Aznaida

There is nothing wrong with choosing "natural" products as long as they do not cause adverse reactions. Because sometimes, natural ingredients may have advantages over synthetic ones and vice versa. Whatever shampoo you choose, whether "natural" or synthetic, will ultimately come down to which shampoo formulation works for your hair and scalp. And you can only know which one works for you by trying them.

For me, the fun is in the "shopping and trying" part. If one shampoo does not deliver the results it promised, I don't cry over spilled milk. I move on to the next. If, however, you have persistent hair and scalp issues that did not improve despite changing your shampoo and conditioner, your best bet is to see a board-certified dermatologist. We have your best interests at heart.

Nourish Your Hair From Within

Nourish Your Hair From Within

Shampoos are only the first step to achieving a glorious head of hair. Aside from washes and leave-on products, your hair's health can be boosted from within. Check out these vitamins and supplements you can take to support your hair's growth and shine.

Summary

Living in the Philippines, our skin and hair can feel grimy and sticky from the heat and humidity. A nice bath can get all the dirt off, but the use of cleansing products can also leave hair dry and damaged. Switching to natural shampoos is one way of retaining our hair's moisture despite frequent showers.

Natural shampoos contain fewer chemicals and more organic ingredients to repair and strengthen our hair from root to tips. We hope that our buying guide and recommended products have been useful in your search for a great natural shampoo.
