What Are the Benefits of Eating Sardines?

Normally, we are told to stay away from processed food, but not all of them are bad for us, and sardines are an example of that. For one, they are rich in fatty omega-3 fatty acids—these work to stabilize heart rhythms and triglycerides and protect your arteries from blockage.

They are a great source of protein, as eating a serving of them can provide you with almost half of your daily requirements. And it does not contain carbs, making it ideal if you are trying to limit your intake.

What Are the Benefits of Eating Sardines?

Finally, sardines are loaded with vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, D, and calcium. This makes for strong bones and a healthy nervous system and blood. Who knew this little fish could pack so much punch?

Since not a lot of us are able to consume fish on the regular, eating sardines is a good way to get our dose of nutrition. And Spanish sardines have a versatile flavor that makes them easy to pair with food from bread, rice, and even pasta! It’s a low-maintenance ulam!

How to Choose Spanish Sardines – Buying Guide

The packaging, type of oil used as well as nutrition content are some of the things you need to consider before buying Spanish sardines. In the section below, we break them down for you to make your shopping easier!

Consider the Kind of Oil Used

Canned sardines are usually submerged in some type of liquid. In the Philippines, the default is tomato sauce. However, in the case of Spanish sardines, it is usually oil. Learn more about the different types here.

Vegetable Oil Is Less Expensive But Can Be Unhealthy

Vegetable Oil Is Less Expensive But Can Be Unhealthy

You can find Spanish sardines in different types of oil. And they boast different flavors as well as nutrition profiles. A majority of Spanish sardines use various types of vegetable oil, such as corn, soybean, or even canola oil.

Taste-wise, vegetable oil is rather neutral, so it won’t taste overpowering. This is great since Spanish sardines are submerged in oil, so you can savor the taste of the sardines. And they are also less costly.

However, nutrient-wise, vegetable oils are not the most healthy as they are refined, which strips them of their nutrition content. But it doesn’t mean omitting them entirely. Remember, you can consume them, just in moderation, and try not to drizzle too much oil on your rice or bread.

Olive Oil Is Healthy but a Little Pricey

Olive Oil Is Healthy but a Little Pricey

Olive oil and extra virgin olive oil, in particular, is one the healthiest oils as it is rich in antioxidants and monosaturated fats, which can reduce inflammation. You are also able to get more nutrition because it is minimally processed.

It has a rather fruity flavor that can enhance the sardines' taste, making it more malinamnam. So, you don’t have to worry about seasoning them. But olive oil doesn’t come cheap, so you might wince at the price tag when looking at Spanish sardines whether it is online on in the supermarket.

Read the Nutrition Facts: Check the Sodium and Saturated Fat Content

Read the Nutrition Facts: Check the Sodium and Saturated Fat Content

Sure, sardines are healthy, but even too much of a good thing isn’t ideal. One thing to look out for is the amount of sodium. Sardines contain a lot of sodium, and a can contains about a third of our body’s daily needs. If you have high blood pressure, you may want to limit your consumption.

Seeing fat on the nutrition label does not mean you should run for the hills. What you want to be wary of is saturated fat. They naturally occur in food but, when eaten in excess, could raise blood cholesterol levels. Again, moderation is key when it comes to things like these so as not to deprive yourself.

Select the Type of Packaging

Select the Type of Packaging

Unlike your typical canned sardines, Spanish sardines can either be canned or bottled. Either is fine, though you might want to consider how much you can consume. Bottled sardines are often sterilized to ensure longevity. It is transparent, which is great because you can inspect the quality of the fish before buying them.

And when you have leftovers, you don’t have to bother transferring them to a new container or hurrying to finish them. This also avoids risks of spills in your ref, and we know how malansa fish gets.

Select the Type of Packaging

Canned sardines can be cylindrical or rectangular-shaped and what’s great about them is that you can choose a size. This is helpful if you live alone, so you can finish the entire can.

You could also opt for easy open cans, which are widely available nowadays. This is handy if you don’t have the necessary tools to open them or you want a snack in a pinch! However, cans can have a metallic taste, which may be imparted onto the fish.
