How to Choose a Phone for Photography - Buying Guide

Choosing a phone based on its camera can be quite challenging. There are so many factors to consider, but it's vital that we discern between what is good and what is just hype. WIth this buying guide, you'll know major points of consideration before you make your purchase.

Size Matters for the Image Sensor

Size Matters for the Image Sensor

Make sure you know the size of the image sensors in your phone. Why? This specification determines how sharp and detailed your photos can be. The sizes are expressed in fractions of inches, like 1/1.3”.

Look at the number that appears after 1. The closer it is to 1”, the better the image quality. For example, a 1/1.2” sensor can be superior to a sensor size of 1/2.3” in terms of sharpness. Go for an image sensor with a smaller number if you want to take better photos in all environments, including low-light conditions.

Check the Aperture of the Lens

Check the Aperture of the Lens

One important detail you must know about the lens is its aperture. The aperture refers to the hole that allows light to enter your phone camera. The bigger the opening, the more light can pass through. You must have a wide aperture as possible if you want to take decent photos in low-light conditions.

The aperture is expressed in terms of f-stops, like f/1.8 or f/5.0. The lower the number, the wider aperture. A wide aperture is also desirable if you want to easily get that blurry background effect in your photos, also known as “bokeh”.

You might ask: if wide apertures are so good, then what’s the point of using narrow apertures? Well, cameras with narrow apertures are best for landscape or building shots. It’s in these photos where the subjects don’t necessarily have to be isolated from their backgrounds.

Choose Cameras That Allow You to Shoot in RAW Format

Choose Cameras That Allow You to Shoot in RAW Format

After taking a photo, it’s common to see that it’s stored as a JPEG file. This is because they don’t require as much space compared to other formats. While great for saving space, JPEG photos might not be the best option for you if you want to get the most out of your phone camera.

Taking photos in RAW is where it’s at. RAW photos enable cameras to preserve data before it’s processed and converted to the smaller JPEG file. This process gives you less leeway for editing photos. Always go for a phone that supports RAW photos if you want to be flexible.

Don't Be Fooled by a High Megapixel Count

Don't Be Fooled by a High Megapixel Count

A common misconception with the number of megapixels is that higher is always better. While this statement can hold for low-end devices, it doesn’t always apply for high-end devices. For most cameras, around 12-20 megapixels could be enough. Go above that, it might all just be marketing.

Instead of solely focusing on the megapixel count, also take note of the micron/µm pixel count. This refers to the pixel size. It’s often overlooked; knowing this can help you determine which phone can produce high-quality photos. In phones, it’s found in the range of 0.8-2 µm. In this case, the bigger, the better.

Choose a Type of Lens Suitable for the Subject of the Photo

Mobile devices have quickly been catching up to digital cameras for various reasons. One reason is the type of lenses that have been introduced in new smartphones. Whether you want to take a photo of a picturesque landscape or a close-up of that colorful flower, a mobile phone can do the job just fine.

Capture the Whole View With Ultra-Wide Angle Cameras

Capture the Whole View With Ultra-Wide Angle Cameras

The default camera that comes with most phones is considered a wide-angle camera. For some, that wide angle isn’t so wide to capture the full view of a beautiful landscape. A type of camera that is perfect for taking scenic views is the ultra-wide camera.

Ultra-wide angle cameras offer a perspective of greater than 90 degrees. In mobile cameras, it’s usually found in focal lengths shorter than 24 mm. The shorter you go, the wider the angle of view. Take note that when increasing the angle of view (i.e. above 120 degrees), pictures can be prone to distortion. Think of it as an effect similar to that of fish-eye lenses.

Use the Telephoto Lens for Distant Subjects

Use the Telephoto Lens for Distant Subjects

Taking photos can be troublesome when our subject is too far away. Fortunately, telephoto lenses have been added to mobile phones to compensate for that. What this lens does is make your subject appear closer to you, despite being far.

It’s great for taking photos of cute animals up close or an intense basketball game. And for the icing on top, it doesn’t sacrifice image quality compared to digital zooming! Digital zooming makes use of software to zoom in a photo, so it's essentially a cropped portion of a photo. Quality is compromised in the process.

A lot of telephoto lenses in the market are used to provide that blurred background that you often see in professionally-taken photos. Phones can make this look convincing so that there’s no need to bring your DSLR anymore. It’s best to look for a phone with a telephoto lens if you love taking portrait shots on the go.

Know the Storage Capacity of the Device

Know the Storage Capacity of the Device

Has your camera app ever told you that you couldn’t take more photos because of insufficient storage? Deleting photos to free up space can be bothersome. Even worse, when you have to do it in the middle of taking the perfect shot.

Storing photos, especially in RAW format, can consume a lot of space on your phone. It’s at least two to three times the file size of JPEG files. If you prefer shooting in RAW, it’s vital to know the storage capacity of the device. Not everyone shoots in RAW, though. It’s still helpful to know the storage capacity and if it can be expanded. Consider this so you don’t feel constrained when taking photos.

Consider the Specifications of the Display

Consider the Specifications of the Display

When considering a camera, the phone screen should not be forgotten. An optical viewfinder is used in most traditional cameras so the photographer sees the full view of the photograph. This is not the case for mobile phones because we see everything through the display.

A display must be color-accurate so it isn’t difficult to edit photos. Of course, a crisp display with high resolution is desired so we can appreciate the photos we take. Also, consider the brightness for taking photos outdoors. The display needs to be bright enough for us to see the photo we’re about to capture.

Go for a Camera With Excellent Video Capabilities

Go for a Camera With Excellent Video Capabilities

Phone cameras are not only equipped to take photos; they take excellent videos, too. When looking for a camera, you might want to consider its video capabilities as well. Look for cameras with high video resolutions like 8K, 4K, and 1080p.

For the frames per second (fps), it can go to as high as 240 or 720 fps for slow-mo videos. The higher the fps, the slower a video can go. Around 30 to 60 fps will do just fine for most cases, though. If you want a cinematic feel, go for a camera that supports 24 fps.

How to Take Better Photos in Low Light

How to Take Better Photos in Low Light

Many mobile phones struggle to capture low-light photos. Their image sensors pale in comparison to that of DSLRs mainly due to their size. However, that doesn't mean you can't make the most out of your mobile camera. Android Authority shares some tips with us on how to make the most out of our smartphones in low light.

Tips:
  1. Use Night Mode. Most phones have their own night modes under different names. It's a useful feature if you don't want to make any manual adjustments for your night shots.
  2. Use artificial lighting. Try turning your flash on to take better photos at night. Or you can invest in external artificial lighting, like a portable LED panel.
  3. Take advantage of manual mode. Taking photos via manual mode makes you in charge of creating the photo. Before using this feature, be sure to know the exposure triangle: aperture, ISO, and shutter speed.
  4. Use a tripod. Taking a tripod with you can do wonders for your night photos. You can 5. produce sharper images and even produce that cool light trail effect!
  5. Shoot in RAW. RAW image files give us access to more details in the photo that could've been lost if they were processed to JPEG. Take pictures in this format to give you more editing power.
  6. Edit your photos. Photo editors can greatly improve your photos. Take advantage of these to produce the best photos possible.
  7. Look for a phone with a large sensor. It's simple. The larger the sensor, the more light that passes through. Large sensors perform well in low-light situations.

To take the best photos, you might need some photography tools. Additional equipment or editing software can easily take your photos to the next level. Find out more about upping your photography game in the links below!

Summary

At the end of the day, it's the skill that makes the photographer; not the device. Going for flagship devices won't immediately make you the best photographer, but its features can help you take better photos. Budget devices will also do just fine as most have improved significantly through the years. All you need is practice.
