How to Choose a Phone Under Php 10,000 - Buying Guide

Buying a smartphone can be overwhelming due to the large number of models out there, but knowing the factors to consider can help you a lot in terms of narrowing down your choices. This buying guide aims to equip you with the basic knowledge you need when buying a new budget smartphone.

Pick the Right Screen Size and Display

Pick the Right Screen Size and Display

With the advent of technological innovations, screen size and display in mobile phones have greatly improved, even in budget-friendly phones. The average screen size is at least 5 inches diagonally, and to pick the right screen size and display, it might be helpful to consider the purpose of your phone.

If you’ll be using it mainly to make calls and texts and listen to music, then a small screen size with a fair display size would suffice. On the other hand, a larger screen with a higher resolution would be more ideal if you’ll be using your phone a lot for watching movies or series, or if you’re into mobile games that use high graphics.

Pay Attention to Camera Quality

Pay Attention to Camera Quality

Taking selfies and recording oneself are among the most popular functions of a phone nowadays, and because of that, it is very important to pay attention to your camera’s megapixel. With budget-friendly phones, you can still find those with decent quality. However, if camera quality is really a priority for you, then there are still options for that, although it may come at the cost of other specs.

Nowadays, the megapixels of budget-friendly mobile phones are around 13 MP for the rear and 8 MP for the front. If you’re fond of taking selfies and videos, you might want to get a phone with good camera quality for taking high-resolution photos and videos.

Determine Its Internal Storage and RAM

Determine Its Internal Storage and RAM

If you use a lot of apps, it is ideal to opt for a phone with a large storage capacity so you can download more apps. However, most phones with large internal storage are much more expensive than those with low capacities. An alternative is to buy a phone with low but expandable storage, and then purchase an external memory card.

Meanwhile, the Random-Access Memory (RAM) is also worth considering if you'll use your phone for multitasking. A higher RAM means that your phone is less likely to slow down even with multiple apps open compared to those with lower RAM. Although a high RAM capacity comes at an additional cost, it might be a worthy investment if you want to prioritize the performance of your phone.

Assess Its Battery Life

Assess Its Battery Life

Before buying a phone, it is imperative to assess its battery life so you’ll know how long your phone can last in standby mode and also while using battery-draining apps. Most phones nowadays have a battery capacity of around 3,500 mAh, which means that they can last for about two days, or shorter if you’re a gamer or an active internet user.

If you use your phone all the time and would rather not bring your charger everywhere, then it would make sense to opt for phones with longer battery life. Aside from battery life, remember to also check if the phone has battery-saving options and fast-charging features. That way, you can use your phone longer and charge it more quickly.

Look for Additional Features

Look for Additional Features

If you're finding it difficult to choose among different phones with almost identical specs, then try looking for additional features included. These features may be those that provide advanced security for your phone, such as fingerprint sensors and facial recognition systems, both of which are very popular among phones right now.

Some phones also offer a dual sim capacity or an expandable memory that gives you the option to have extra storage, especially since budget phones usually have limited capacity. While budget phones may pale in comparison to high-end ones in terms of specs, that definitely doesn't mean that you have to miss out on other cool features as well!

Boost Your Phone’s Productivity

Since most people use their phones daily for tasks in their personal lives, work, and school, it is crucial to have a fast and smooth device throughout the day. However, it is common to experience some lag once you have accumulated some data and applications on your phone.

If you notice that your device is running slow, here are some tips from Nick Pino at TechRadar that might help you speed up your device.

Tips:

  1. Update the operating system of your phone. Open the settings menu on your Android device and scroll down to "About phone." Click "System Updates" to check if an update is available.
  2. Check if you have apps running in the background. Tap on the overview button or the square logo on the bottom of your screen. Close down the apps that you are not using.
  3. Regularly uninstall apps that you don't use anymore. Go to settings and click "Apps." Uninstall the apps that you no longer need.
  4. Turning off additional animations. If you have a moving wallpaper, change it to a static image.
  5. Delete widgets that are no longer useful for you. Reduce widgets on your home screen by holding them for a few seconds and dragging them to the delete icon.
  6. Clear cache. Go to settings and click "Storage" to check what's taking up your space. You can choose an app and clear its cache to remove your data in that app. If you use your browser or Chrome often, you can also clear data and cookies.
  7. Delete photos and videos. You can back up your videos and photos first so you can delete them from your device.

If you've already done what you can, but your phone is still slow, your last resort can be a total factory reset that will delete all your data. Hopefully, one of these tips works for you and your smartphone so that there's no need for a reset. Enjoy using your faster device and applications that run more smoothly compared to before!
