How to Choose a Sitcom on Netflix - Viewer’s Guide

Watching a sitcom takes a bit of a commitment. Expect to spend hours on end binging on episodes guaranteed to give you laughs. But what should you consider before choosing the series you will devote hours to? Here are some things that can get you started.

1

Lovable Characters Make You Want to Binge-Watch

Lovable Characters Make You Want to Binge-Watch

Sitcom characters can range from the relatable to the wildly caricatured. There are some that remind you of someone you know and some you wish to never meet in this lifetime. Wanting to know more about these characters usually makes you hit ‘next episode’ even after telling yourself it’s time to sleep.

Choose Family Sitcoms for Wholesome Laughs

Choose Family Sitcoms for Wholesome Laughs

The earliest versions of sitcoms were all about families. From small families to large extended families, the stories are guaranteed not just to give laughs but to tug at your heartstrings as well. These are great for wholesome jokes that you can share with nieces and nephews.

Workplace Sitcoms Make Forced Connections Feel Meaningful

Workplace Sitcoms Make Forced Connections Feel Meaningful

This type of sitcom usually starts with awkward encounters with people you are forced to be with every day. After marathoning a season or two though, you are sure to find endearing qualities of each character. We might be salty that The Office never became available on Netflix Philippines, but there are others that can fill that gap.

Sitcom Friend Groups Make You Feel Part of the Barkada

Sitcom Friend Groups Make You Feel Part of the Barkada

Don’t we all wish our friend groups are as tight-knit as the characters in F.R.I.E.N.D.S? Alas, having a kabarkada roommate and the others living across the hall doesn’t happen too often in the Philippines. It makes for a very convenient studio setup however for sitcoms.

Check How Many Seasons It Has Been Running

Check How Many Seasons It Has Been Running

If you wish to watch the whole series from beginning to end, it is best to check how many seasons it has been running. A quick Google search can let you know if it has been renewed for another season or if it is still ongoing. For example, some shows can have a mere 2 seasons while others span up to more than 10!

In terms of episode duration, sitcoms are shorter than other TV series as they have an average running time of less than 30 minutes. This comes in handy as knowing how much time you can devote to a TV show helps you schedule your viewing or binging habits.

3

Read Online Reviews To Know What to Expect

Read Online Reviews To Know What to Expect

There are a lot of sitcoms so well-loved that a thousand or so reviews on them exist online. Browsing through these reviews can help give you an idea of the story progression of the series you want to watch.

Of course, their relationships also add to what makes you feel invested in a series. Are you looking for a kilig plotline? Do you like watching friends figuring out life together? Whatever it is you are leaning towards, there is definitely a sitcom waiting for you.

You could also check out review sites like IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes, as these sites often contain more than just a generic review of "it was good" or "it was bad." Knowing what others love about the series keeps you on your toes about what to expect from it.

Know the Maturity Rating Before Watching

Know the Maturity Rating Before Watching

Sitcoms originally started with plots revolving around lovable families where jokes are generally wholesome. It has since evolved to explore more mature topics and daring quips.

Gone are the days when a sitcom would mean something the whole family can enjoy. Best check the maturity rating before asking your 7-year-old nephew to watch with you. Netflix employs its own rating system ranging from Kids, Teens, and Adults

Furthermore, each section is specified as to what age group it is recommended for such as "All Audiences" to "Ages 18 and Up". This way, you can be sure there will be no awkward moments when do finally get to watch the show.

When Comedy Meets Philosophy

There were so many unexpected twists and turns in this sitcom that you don't know whether to laugh, cry, or ponder your life. This masterpiece from Michael Schur is a brilliant meeting of comedy and philosophy.

The story starts quite simply: what happens to humans in the afterlife? What follows is an intellectual dissection of life after death is presented in an unassumingly endearing package.

With a stellar cast led by Kirsten Bell and Ted Danson and breakout performances from Jameela Jamil, Manny Jacinto, and D'Arcy Carden make each episode truly memorable. There are also notable cameos from Lisa Kudrow, Maya Rudolph, and Adam Scott. It is an introspective comedy that you shouldn't miss.

Detectives Getting the Job Done How Exactly?

It is hard not to fall for Andy Samberg's charms as Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Once he starts going 'cool cool cool (repeat until infinity),' however, you can't help but wonder how exactly is he a good detective? Samberg has the goofy guy who can also be serious and even outstanding at times down pat.

The kooky characters of this squad are sure to keep you hooked. From the robot-like captain to the obsessive-compulsive teacher's pet who smokes to the overbearing best friend - you are sure to find your favorite. The highlight of each season is their Halloween Heist, where the Ultimate Detective/Genius/Human is decided.

The Pains of Growing Up in Cross Cultural America

This sitcom revolves around the story of lead character Devi as she deals with the grief of losing her father while she navigates high school life. If that doesn't seem already much, you can add being a second-generation immigrant to the mix. Thankfully she has found a group of culturally diverse friends who are both supporters and enablers.

While the writing is distinctly Mindy Kaling - you will surely hear her through Devi, especially in season 1 - this is also the show's charm. Actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan however, finds her bearings on season 2, as she slowly comes to her own as Devi. Join her confusion and choose if you are Team Paxton or Team Ben.

Tina Fey, Robert CarlockUnbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Navigating Present-day New York After 15 Years in a Bunker

The quirky and caricaturish characters of this sitcom never fall flat in the hands of the actors cast for the roles. Ellie Kemper shines as Kimmy Schmidt, a girl who was rescued after spending 15 years in a bunker. She regains control of her life in New York, where she meets an aspiring actor, a hippie landlord, and a trophy wife.

Each scene is packed with so many jokes that it sometimes takes a rewatch to see what you might have missed. One of the most memorable scenes is from Season 2, where one of the characters did his own version of Beyonce's Lemonade after he saw his boyfriend with another man.

The TV Family We All Want To Have

Just like the 'sneak attacks' the series is famous for, this series grows on you slowly but surely. Based on a play, the TV show cast stage actors Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jean Yoon to reprise their roles on the small screen. They play Appa and Umma, immigrant parents who want nothing more than a bright future for their kids.

The series is pretty simple and straightforward in terms of plot. The family runs a convenience store that is frequented by all types of characters from their neighborhood. Appa has a strained relationship with his son, Jung (Simu Liu), while Janet (Andrea Bang) is torn between pleasing her parents or following her dreams.

Things always sort themselves out, and you know a happy ending is in the offing. The series plays it safe, but the formula works. Predictable as it may be, is this not the reason why we like watching sitcoms anyway?

Realistic Struggles of Teenagers Discovering Sex

Otis unwittingly becomes a teenage pseudo-sex therapist to his classmates when he realizes all the sex education from his sex therapist mom actually stuck. He finds clients with the help of his biggest crush, Maeve. To add a bit more fun and drama to the mix, he has a gay best friend.

The Brits are known for their dry humor so expect a lot of that in this series. It also tackles a lot of teenage issues including consent, self-discovery, and body-image issues. It is a refreshing and more accurate depiction of high schoolers - as actual people who ultimately just want to love and be loved.

Families Don't Need to Get Along All the Time

A dad re-marrying someone half his age, parents who can't seem to quite get everything together, and a gay couple constantly bickering with each other - all in one family. Modern Family uses the mockumentary format as it tells the story of, well, a modern family.

It is such a fun and easy watch that makes you feel part of the chaos as you go through all 11 seasons. The family goes through their fair share of victories and failures, fights and arguments, as well as heartwarming moments.

From the moment Cameron lifts their newly-adopted baby Lion King-style to introduce her to the family, you will surely be hooked. It's a great companion for days you feel lonely for a bit of human love.

Stories About a Study Group and Occasionally, Paintball

This sitcom struggled a lot with ratings during its TV run, but it quickly gained a loyal following thanks to the unique appeal of the characters and the sometimes absurd storylines. It is mainly about students attending Greendale Community College who are part of a study group.

While most of the time, the cast deals with a college subject they need to study for, almost every episode is really an homage to pop culture. It is rife with meta-references to popular shows, movies, even card games - from Pulp Fiction to Dungeons and Dragons. I look forward to the paintball episodes where they do everything from Die Hard to Star Wars. A great sitcom for the pop culture fanatic.

Family Always Comes First In This Heartwarming Comedy

At the heart of this sitcom is a close-knit family trying to support each other the best way they know how. It could be by yelling at each other or freezing each other out. But since it is a Latino family, expect a lot of deadpan jokes and slapstick comedy all throughout.

At the helm is Penelope Alvarez, who is an Army veteran turned nurse. She lives with her religious and dramatic mother, her daughter, who is figuring out her sexuality, and her flashy teenage son. The series was unfortunately dropped by Netflix after the third season but went on for their fourth on American cable TV.

A Hopeless Romantic Catches STD

There is nothing more simultaneously entertaining and frustrating than watching a will they or won't they sitcom. Throw in a sexually transmitted disease into the mix and what you'll get is an often hilarious but mostly romantic British sitcom.

The story starts with Dylan finding out he has chlamydia and is now tasked to call his former sexual partners to let them know about the disease. As he goes through his phonebook, we jump to that time in his life when he dated them. Through it all, we see why he's meant to be with Evie.

While a season finale has yet to be announced, it seems like the series ends with an unfinished storyline. Just like that love you chased in your 20s that never had closure, this series shows you have no choice but just to move on with your life regardless.

Get Ready For Your Best TV Marathon Ever

Summary

There’s something oddly satisfying about finding that sitcom family where you feel you belong. The same is true about sharing inside jokes with a long-running TV series that makes you laugh out loud at the most random moments.

And there’s nothing quite like having a good laugh to chase the blues away. That being said, enjoy these sitcoms and hope you discover that more you would grow to love. Happy watching!
