How to Choose a Buko Pie – Buying Guide

In case you haven’t made up your mind already, here's a buying guide that might help you. We've narrowed down some important factors to consider so you can purchase the right buko pie for you and your loved ones.

Pick Between the Classic and Fusion Buko Pies

There are many versions of buko pie in the market. The first point to consider is if you'd like to stick with the classic version, or take your taste buds on an adventure with new and modern fusions.

Get a Dose of Nostalgia With the Classic Buko Pie

The classic kind of buko pie, the one you most likely grew up eating, consists of young, juicy coconut meat with a sweet milky filling and wrapped in a flaky pie crust. They can also be found being sold by street vendors in the southern part of Manila.

Try Fusion Flavors for a Fresh Perspective

Try Fusion Flavors for a Fresh Perspective

Bakeshops nowadays are becoming more and more creative in their efforts to create unique desserts. With the addition of other fruits such as mango, langka, and ube, they’ve added a fresh twist to the classic buko pie. For those who like trying new flavors, keep an eye out for these delicious fusions.

Look Into Different Sizes

Look Into Different Sizes

A regular-sized buko pie is about 8 or 9 inches in diameter. Since it's large, it's good for sharing with the whole family or for giving as pasalubong. It's rare to find buko pie sold online in slices, but if you prefer smaller servings, you can opt for buko tarts. These are like mini-buko pies that you can purchase as singles or as a box.

Search for Nearer Branches and Official Resellers

Search for Nearer Branches and Official Resellers

A lot of delicious buko pies come from the provinces, so it may be a disadvantage for those living in the metro, especially with all these health and safety restrictions. But don't worry, some of these stores have opened branches in various places in the country and hired resellers to assist with distribution. You could try searching for locations that are closer to you for faster delivery.

Take Note of Delivery Options and Lead Time

Take Note of Delivery Options and Lead Time

Buko pies need time to be baked and assembled to maintain freshness before it reaches its customers. They also spoil easily, so it's essential to get a freshly baked pie. It's best to ask about the lead time and order in advance to make sure you get a fresh order. There are also some stores that sell fresh buko pie daily, and these are great options for when you have a rush order.

For delivery options, not all stores are open to long-distance delivery, especially those located in the provinces. The last resort would be to pick them up at their branches or book a third-party courier. But if a store does offer in-house delivery, there's a big chance that they have their own team of riders. Make sure to look up their delivery modes first before purchasing.

Pair Your Pie With a Sweet Cup of Cappuccino

They say a cup of coffee a day can keep your worries away. That's definitely true, especially when it’s matched with a slice of buko pie. Here's a sweet recipe from Yummy that will teach you the basics of making a cappuccino right in your own home!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp Coffee Granules
  • 2 Tbsp White Sugar
  • 1 Cup Milk of Your Choice, Hot or Boiled
  • Chocolate Syrup (optional)

Procedure:

  1. In a bowl, pour the coffee first, then the sugar. Combine well with a spoon.
  2. Add 1 tsp water and mix again. Continue this pattern for 10-12 minutes by adding 1/2 tsp in the succeeding rounds and beating it in a circular motion until the batter turns into a fluffy, brown paste.
  3. Store in the refrigerator first or scoop 1 tbsp of the coffee paste into a cup.
  4. Pour the milk and serve. You may drizzle it in chocolate syrup for a more delightful presentation.
