How to Choose a Lube - Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Choose the lube base depending on your preference.
  2. Look for lubes with the right pH level.
  3. Get a smaller-sized bottle to try out a small amount first.
  4. Choose sperm-friendly lubes if you are trying to conceive.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

1

Water-Based, Oil-Based, Silicone-Based, Organic: Choose the Lube Base Depending on Your Preference

Lubes are typically made of a base, which helps maintain the lubrication of the whole solution. There are 4 types of bases used: water, oil, silicone, and natural. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so let’s go over each one.

If You Want Something Safe to Use With Condoms and Sex Toys, Go for Water-Based Lube

If You Want Something Safe to Use With Condoms and Sex Toys, Go for Water-Based Lube

Most of the lubricants that are available right now are water-based. Brands produce this type of lube since it is easy to manufacture and feels like natural lubrication. Most people don’t have any adverse effects from it, as water-based lubes are less likely to cause any irritation during sex.

However, water-based lubes are absorbed quickly by the skin, which can dry up while in use. To improve the longevity of its lubrication, some are incorporated with moisturizers, such as carrageenan or aloe vera to soothe the skin and reduce dryness. These lubes are compatible with condoms and sex toys but wash off quickly when doing shower sex.

Water-based lubricants are one of the safest lubricants used for penetration and masturbation. They are ideal for vaginal penetration as they most closely mimic the vagina's natural lubrication and thus lessen the risk of messing with the vagina's pH levels. Studies have shown that water-based lubricants were associated with fewer genital side effects or symptoms.

They also do not cause latex to deteriorate. Water-based lubricants may or may not contain glycerin. Glycerin makes the lubricant sweet tasting. This may help during oral sex, however, it is important to wash off the lubricant to avoid yeast infection.

Oil-Based Lubes for Those Who Do Not Use Condoms

Oil-Based Lubes for Those Who Do Not Use Condoms

Oil-based sex lubes are made from plant-based of synthetic oils. They are hydrophobic, which means that they repel water. This makes them hard to wash off, but they don't dry out as quickly during sex. However, an oil-based lube is not compatible with and reacts to latex condoms. This increases the probability for the condom to rupture, rendering the contraceptive ineffective.

These are more suitable for couples who are in long-term relationships and do not use condoms. You should also consider your bedsheets when using oil-based lube, as it can stain fabrics, making laundry a challenge. It's also worth noting that these lubes can stain your clothes, creating some clean-up challenges.

A lot of people also use oil-based lubricants as they can easily be found in the house. These lubricants include kitchen oils like coconut oil. Synthetic oil-based lubricants, such as mineral oil and petroleum jelly, can also be used but they have the tendency to irritate the vulva. So be careful when you use them. Moreover, it is important to note that oil-based lubricants should not be used with latex condoms as they increase the risk of condoms breaking.

Here's a list of household oil-based lubricants that should not be used with latex condoms:
  • Baby oil
  • Burn ointment
  • Dairy butter
  • Palm or coconut oil
  • Cooking oil
  • Fish oil
  • Mineral oil
  • Suntan oil
  • Haemorrhoid cream
  • Petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
  • Body/hand lotions

Silicone-Based Lubes to Lessen the Chance of Irritation but Should Not Be Used With Sex Toys

Silicone-Based Lubes to Lessen the Chance of Irritation but Should Not Be Used With Sex Toys

Silicone lubricants contain no water, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. This makes it feel different compared to the previously mentioned lubes. Silicone isn’t absorbed by the skin, which gives it a lot of possibilities for use, depending on your imagination. For those who are interested in trying anal sex, silicone-based lubes are recommended.

One advantage of this type of lube is that it does not cause any allergic reaction, with most people not experiencing any irritation. Due to the absence of water, silicone-based lubes last longer and tend to wash off easier than oil-based lubes. However, these react with silicone sex toys, so avoid using them with one.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist
Dr. Rica Cruz

Silicone is hypoallergenic. Thus, most people can use it without worrying about skin reactions. However, using silicone-based lubricants with silicone sex toys is not recommended as it creates a reaction with the toys. They can cause the toy to swell or damage its surface, making it sticky.

Natural Lube Is Safe to Be Ingested but Reacts With Condoms

Natural Lube Is Safe to Be Ingested but Reacts With Condoms

With the growing trend in all-natural ingredients, choosing organic lubes is now easier. These are for people who are concerned about the manufacturing processes and effects of the other types of lubes.

One of the common ingredients in natural lubes is coconut oil. It is safe to be ingested and wears off much longer. A downside of using coconut oil is that it reacts with condoms and is hard to remove if it comes into contact with fabric. Opt for this type of lube if you aren’t planning on using any wearable contraceptives.

Lubricant manufacturers came up with products that they claim as "organic." It is important for the product to have an organic certification seal from verified organizations to make sure that the lubricant is truly organic. Organic lubricants should be free of parabens, a type of compound that was said to alter the body's hormone level and has been associated with breast cancer.

Get a Smaller-Sized Bottle to Try Out a Small Amount First

Get a Smaller-Sized Bottle to Try Out a Small Amount First

Are you in the process of trying out lubes and don’t know which one is for you? Worry not, as there are lubricants available in sachets. This makes it easier to store in case of emergency and is a good way to try out a lube when you are still on the market for one. You can always buy a bottle or tube once you have found what works for you.

Lubricant manufacturers have sample packs that you can buy. It is recommended that you test a small amount of lubricant on your skin first to make sure that you won't have adverse reactions to it.

3

Choose Sperm-Friendly Lubes if You Are Trying to Conceive

Choose Sperm-Friendly Lubes if You Are Trying to Conceive

If you're wondering, can lube kill sperm? The short answer is yes. There are many lubes with spermicide that helps kill sperm. They can also impede the sperm's mobility.

This may be good if you're practicing family planning, but it won’t help you achieve your goal if you're trying to conceive. In that case, it's best to opt for specially formulated lubes that can help the sperm reach the egg safely.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist

Nonoxynol-9 (N-9) is the active ingredient used in most spermicide lubricants. Studies have found that N-9 has the potential to be damaging to vaginal tissue. Thus, it is important that you use lubricants with spermicides sparingly or, better yet, use a condom for better protection.

Recommended for Those Trying to Conceive

One of the problems with conceiving is that intercourse can cause vaginal excretions to dry up. Adding a lube will also hinder sperm mobility, leading to smaller chances of getting pregnant. For couples wanting to have a baby, the Pre-Seed lubricant is made with both pleasure and family planning in mind

Developed by doctors, this lube is safe and water-soluble. It comes in a special formulation, providing an antioxidant environment to help the sperm survive while on its way to fertilizing the egg. It also mimics the fertile fluids of a woman, helping the sperm cells to swim in. This pack also comes with 9 applicators for convenient lubrication.

This product is popular all over the world for its long-lasting staying power. It definitely doesn't lose its effectiveness over time. Ways to Enjoy Sex Lubes

The use of lubrication can greatly enhance your activities in the bedroom. Everything is slicker, which leads to more enjoyment and longer-lasting sex. It can also add additional experiences and even add new flavors to your oral sex. Below are the ways to maximize the use of sex lubes, according to Health.com.

Don’t Put Too Much Lube

Don’t Put Too Much Lube

Sex is pleasurable due to the friction experienced by the sex organs as they make contact with each other. Lubrication helps by preventing the organs from drying up that can cause chafing. However, too much lube will prevent you from feeling anything due to how slippery it will turn out, so use lube in moderation.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist
Dr. Rica Cruz

A study reported that more than 70 percent of the time that lubricant was used for vaginal or anal intercourse, people do so to make sex more pleasurable. So lube up as much as you want and if you feel it's too much, you can always wipe it with a towel

Lube Helps With Safer Sex

Lube Helps With Safer Sex

Since lubes can help everything feel smooth, this will help prevent STIs and infections. It does this by preventing any microscopic tears in your skin where bacteria and viruses can enter. It can also help prevent pregnancy as less friction will help the condom retain its structural integrity, leading to less breakage.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist
Dr. Rica Cruz

Lubricants help to make sex pleasurable by decreasing friction. Condoms are usually lubricated, but for optimal pleasure, you may want to put lube inside and outside the condom before putting it on. WHO research showed that when the water-based lubricant was used, the breakage rate of condoms was 3%, compared to 21.4% when no additional lubricant was used.

Take Masturbation to Another Level

Take Masturbation to Another Level

We need to release our sexual tension. If our partners are away or if you are single and crave some sexual fun, you might have to resort to masturbating to achieve pleasure. Adding lube while you’re masturbating reduces the friction from your hand, making it much more pleasurable. It can also make it easier for you to use toys, giving you mind-blowing orgasms with no risk of chafing.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist
Dr. Rica Cruz

A study that analyzed more than 3,000 masturbation experiences, reported that participants' ratings of sexual pleasure and sexual satisfaction were statistically significantly higher when a water-based lubricant or silicone-based lubricant was used compared to masturbating without a lubricant. Thus, lubricants aren't just for intercourse, you may also use if for your solo satisfaction.

Apply Lube to Your Body and Your Partner’s

Apply Lube to Your Body and Your Partner’s

It is a buzzkill to pull out your lube bottle when in the heat of the moment. Before any action, it is best to put lubrication on all the concerned organs, such as the penis and the vagina. Spread it on the perimeter as well to facilitate a smoother transition and prevent any hiccups when trying to penetrate.

You can use lube during foreplay to increase the sensations. You can use warming lube to rub at the erogenous parts of the body, such as the nipples, thighs, and belly, for maximum arousal. For added pleasure, try putting lube on the penis before using a condom. Slippage may be a risk, but it will feel so much better if you can make it work.

Dr. Rica Cruz
Sex and Relationships Therapist
Dr. Rica Cruz

Research also showed that more than half of the time that women used lubricants, they do it by applying it on their vulvas, clitoris, their vaginas, anus, or their partner's genitals. Some of them also apply the lubricant directly to their fingers to make masturbation feel better. Adding lubricant to the testicles can also provide a different sensation for your male partner/s.

Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Dr. Rica Cruz

Learn more from Dr. Rica as she answers some of the internet's most asked questions. Read on below to make sure you're informed and educated before getting intimate with your partner!

Does the pH level of the Lube Matter?

Lubricants can alter the pH level of your vagina. Infections, such as yeast growth and thrush outbreaks, may start to happen at around the pH level of 5. Thus, it is best to use lubricants with a pH level of 4 to match your vagina's pH levels. For MSMs (men who have sex with men), a pH in the range of 5.5–7 would be more appropriate. Lubricants with a pH exceeding 7 are not recommended.

Can Lube Make a Man Last Longer?

Some studies show that using lubricants can make a man more satisfied with their sex life. A study found out that adding lubricant to condoms was significantly associated with longer intercourse. Some men report that they use lubricants with benzocaine or even cooling lubricants to help them last longer. Although studies are few to conclusively say that lube can make men last longer, it doesn't hurt to try, right?

Can Lube Cause Irritations and Infections?

Yes. Some lubricants may contain harmful products that can cause infections and irritations. It is important to consider several things when using lubricants. First, the pH of a lubricant should match the area you’re using it with. If you are using it on your vulva and in your vagina, the pH should be from 3.8-4.5 as lubricants with pH above 4.5 may increase the risk of yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis. Anally, the pH level of the lubricant should be pH 5.5- pH 7.

Another thing to consider is the osmolality property of the lubricant. Osmolality is the ability of the lubricant to draw out moisture from tissues. Lubricants with osmolality higher than normal vaginal secretions may damage vaginal tissue which can lead to irritation, reduced protection against infection, and increased transmission risk of STIs, including HIV. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends osmolalities of less than 380 mOsm/kg, or at most 1200 mOsm/kg.

Are There Ingredients Toxic to the Genitals?

You have to look at the ingredients of the lubricants that you use. Chemical ingredients found in lubricants can be toxic to your vaginal tissue. These ingredients are:

  1. Chlorhexidine gluconate - A chemical that can kill strains of lactobacillus, a bacteria that is necessary for healthy vaginal flora.
  2. Parabens - Preservative chemicals that can irritate vaginal mucous membranes, leading to genital rashes, and potentially disrupt your hormonal balance.
  3. Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, and Cyclopentasiloxane - Commonly found in silicone-based lubricants, these substances are linked to reproductive harm and uterine cancer in animal studies.
  4. Undisclosed flavors or fragrances - Flavors and fragrances may include a mix of chemicals that can cause irritation and allergy.

Do Warming Lubes Make Sex Feel Better?

Using lubricants that add sensation to the skin can work with some people and not with others, so this is subjective. Warming lubes contain mentholated ingredients and compounds derived from peppers to produce a warming sensation.

There are those who do not like the extra heat and find them irritating and not helpful when sustaining their arousal. Some even report prolonged stinging and redness that ruin the mood for sex. But for those who are exploring temperature play, try a small amount of warming lube first on your arm before putting it directly on your genitals.
