Your power bank purchase or upgrade must suit your preference - do you prefer a small one or one you can use several times a day? Let's go over the important points to take note of when choosing a power bank.
The power bank you will need will solely rely on the required capacity of your mobile device or gadget. For reference, you will need at least 5,000mAh to fully charge a smartphone. So if you’ll be charging your phone more than once, a 10,000mAh power bank will suffice, but if you plan on charging a tablet, you will need a 20,000mAh power bank.
Another thing to keep in mind is the issue of conversion loss, a power bank’s actual capacity is at 70% of the advertised capacity. For example, a 10,000mAh would actually only give you around 7,000mAh of power. That’s why it’s better to buy a power bank that has a larger capacity than your device needs.
A power bank that weighs around 200g will be perfect to carry around. You may think that there’s little to no distinction between carrying around a 200g and a 300g power bank, but you’d notice the difference if you carry it every day.
However, as mentioned earlier, the larger the capacity of the power bank, the heavier it will be, so it’s up to your preferences or needs. Basically, you’ll need to decide whether you want portability versus high capacity.
How fast a power bank can charge your device is not determined by its capacity but by its output charge. The output charge is measured in amperes, so the higher the ampere, the faster it can transfer power to your device. That means an output charge of 2A would be faster than 1A, while a 2.1A output charge would be faster than 2A.
You also have to make sure that your device supports fast charging or else, it won’t make any difference having a power bank with a high output charge. So before you buy a power bank, it is highly advised to check your device’s specifications.
Some power banks have fixed output for each port, while others have fixed output for all the ports combined. We recommend the former for those who want stability and the latter for those who generally only need one fast-charging USB port.
It comes as no surprise that the market is saturated with power banks manufactured by bigger and known brands, as well as unbranded ones. To ensure that you get a quality product that not only gives your money's worth but also juices your device properly and offers protection, we highly recommend purchasing from a reputable brand.
Power banks that are unbranded or those that come from lesser-known brands, although cheap, could be poorly constructed and might not have passed safety standards. This could ultimately lead to potential safety problems, such as burn and fire hazards.
Do you go swimming at the beach or go mountain hiking? Then maybe getting a power bank with extra features will suit you. Some power banks are waterproof, so you don't have to worry about it bringing it to the beach.
Others are equipped with an LED light in case of emergencies, while some can be charged using a solar panel, which is perfect if you’re planning on staying outdoors for some time.
Getting stuck somewhere without juice on either of your gadgets is a frustrating scenario. These situations can be easily resolved by getting an ever-trusty power bank. Here are some easy tips by RAVPower on how to get the most out of your power bank.
