How to Choose a Lip Balm - Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Look for lip balms with natural moisturizing ingredients like beeswax and shea butter.
  2. Gently exfoliate lips by using lip balms with sugar or honey.
  3. Avoid salicylic acid, menthol, phenol, or camphor if you have dry, chapped lips.
  4. Look for lip balms with added SPF for sun protection - SPF 15 above is recommended.
  5. Try tinted lip balms to give your lips a break from lipstick.
  6. Sticks and tubes for on-the-go and jars for the house.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

① Look for Lip Balms With Natural Moisturizing Ingredients Like Beeswax and Shea Butter

Look for Lip Balms With Natural Moisturizing Ingredients Like Beeswax and Shea Butter
Lip balms formulated with natural ingredients are the best ones. After all, you wouldn’t want anything toxic near your mouth! Lanolin is a natural animal-derived ingredient that softens and protects your lips from environmental stress. Beeswax, on the other hand, is a natural antibacterial that also helps retain moisture.

What about moisturizing ingredients? We’re pretty sure this isn’t new, but shea butter and cocoa butter are effective moisturizers that won’t irritate your skin. Natural oils, such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, sunflower oil, and avocado oil, are easily absorbed into the skin, allowing them to moisturize deeper.

Dr. Mara Huber's Comment
Because of the tendency of the lips to dry out, it is useful to look for ingredients that act as occlusives (coat the skin and create a protective barrier to water loss) and emollients (fill in gaps between skin cells and smoothen out cracks).

Here are some examples:
  • Beeswax
  • Cocoa butter
  • Dimethicone
  • Lanolin (may cause irritation in some)
  • Mineral oil
  • Paraffin
  • Petrolatum
  • Shea butter
  • Ceramides
  • Plant oils (e.g. castor seed oil, hemp seed oil)

② Gently Exfoliate Lips By Using Lip Balms With Sugar or Honey

Gently Exfoliate Lips By Using Lip Balms With Sugar or Honey

Exfoliating the lips is beneficial in keeping to soft and free from dry skin. If you want a lip balm that can gently exfoliate your lips, look for sugar, papaya, or honey. Sugar manually scrubs away dead skin, while papaya and honey chemically exfoliate without being harsh. Raw honey contains a mild hydroxy acid, and papaya is a source of natural enzymes.

③ Avoid Salicylic Acid, Menthol, Phenol, or Camphor if You Have Dry, Chapped Lips

Avoid Salicylic Acid, Menthol, Phenol, or Camphor if You Have Dry, Chapped Lips
Although commonly used, there are some additives that you will need to stay away from to prevent dry, chapped lips. The following ingredients actually cause more harm than good when included in lip balm formulation, so keep an eye out for them.

A known acne-fighting ingredient, salicylic acid actually dries out your lips. It exfoliates dead skin cells and works well for acne, but not for smoothing out your lips. Camphor, phenol, and menthol give you a cooling and tingling sensation that might feel good, but that’s actually the protective layers of your lips peeling off.

You’ve probably heard us says this countless times when it comes to choosing skincare, but steer clear of parabens. These keep our cosmetics bacteria-free for years, but research has suggested they have some harmful effects.

Dr. Mara Huber's Comment
It would also be beneficial to avoid certain ingredients in lip balms, especially when the lips are chapped:
  • Camphor
  • Eucalyptus
  • Flavoring: Cinnamon, citrus, mint, and peppermint
  • Fragrance
  • Lanolin
  • Menthol
  • Octinoxate or oxybenzone (in lip balms with sunscreen)
  • Phenol (or phenyl)
  • Propyl gallate
  • Salicylic acid

④ Look for Lip Balms With Added SPF for Sun Protection - SPF 15 Above Is Recommended

Look for Lip Balms With Added SPF for Sun Protection - SPF 15 Above Is Recommended
Our lips are thin and fragile, plus they don’t have any melanin, so they’re susceptible to the sun’s UV rays. Sun damage can also cause your lips to dry and crack. Zinc oxide is a natural ingredient that doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals, so it’s safe for your lips.

Zinc oxide is also non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t cause any allergic reactions that might worsen your skin. It gives your lips broad-spectrum sun protection for both UVA and UVB rays. Check the label or packaging for an SPF rating and make sure it’s indicated as broad spectrum. SPF15 can block around 93% of the sun’s rays, while SPF30 blocks around 97%.

Dr. Mara Huber's Comment

The skin of the lips has little melanin compared to the skin on the rest of the body. Melanin is what’s responsible for our skin color and is also the body’s natural way of protecting the skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Due to a lack of protection against UV rays and because the lips are constantly exposed to the sun, the lips are at a higher risk of sun damage, including sunburn, sunspots, and skin cancer. This is why it’s important to use a lip balm that contains sunscreen. Some ingredients that protect from the sun include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

⑤ Try Tinted Lip Balms to Give Your Lips a Break from Lipstick

Try Tinted Lip Balms to Give Your Lips a Break from Lipstick

Lipsticks are hard to work with sometimes. Non-transfer matte lipsticks have a tendency to dry out your lips, while the traditional ones can get messy when you accidentally touch your lips with your hand or clothes.

For days that you don’t feel like wearing lipstick, use a tinted lip balm - of course, don’t forget to check its ingredients. It’s safer and healthier for your lips, plus you’ll be left with soft and plump lips with a little flush of color.

Dr. Mara Huber
Dermatologist
Dr. Mara Huber's Comment
Mostly wax-based and saturated with pigment, the primary purpose of lipstick is to add color to the lips. On the other hand, lip balms are mainly made of occlusive and emollient ingredients to moisturize and nourish the lips.

Lipsticks are not created alike, with some more drying than others. In general, lipstick is mostly made of waxes and oils and may have some occlusives and emollients. To give the appearance of a flat, non-shiny look, matte lipsticks do not have many moisturizing ingredients, which is why these tend to be drying. Other ingredients in lipsticks that may be irritating to some individuals are alcohol, silicone oil (long-lasting lipsticks), fragrance, and preservatives.

⑥ Sticks and Tubes for On-the-Go and Jars for the House

Sticks and Tubes for On-the-Go and Jars for the House

Of course, you can also go with whichever you prefer. However, we recommend using sticks and tubes while you’re out and about since it’s more convenient and easier to apply

On the other hand, you’d have to dig your fingers into a pot or jar of lip balm, risking contamination. If you do prefer to use a jar, make sure your fingers are extra clean before applying!

Dr. Mara Huber
Dermatologist
Dr. Mara Huber's Comment

While lip balms in sticks are convenient and easy to use when on the go, thicker products that are often packaged in tubes or jars are great options for home use, especially at nighttime.

We tend to lose the most heat and moisture from our skin overnight (and if you sleep with your mouth open, you're going to dry your lips out even more), so thick ointment-type balms - which are quite effective in retaining moisture - will help protect the lips from drying out as you sleep. One other benefit of this type of balm is you can moisturize areas other than your lips!

No.1

Thick and Smooth Rosy Lip Balm

If you love floral scents, then we're sure that you won't be able to get enough of this lip balm! It's formulated with Vaseline's signature petrolatum, mixed with shea butter - a great combination to keep your lips soft and supple! It has a very subtle pink shade that will leave your lips looking healthy and pinkish.

Vaseline is well known for its petroleum jelly tubs, and it makes sense that these lip balms come in a cute mini to-go version of those. It also comes in a stick version, which is much more convenient to use. We recommend getting this mini-tub version for at-home use, and as you go about your day, you can bring the stick lip balm with you.

No.2

This can be worn as a primer to your favorite lip product, and it is also great worn under face masks!

While it doesn't have SPF to give your lip sun protection, it does have other nourishing ingredients like aloe vera, olive oil, and vitamin E. All these ingredients work in harmony to soothe your lips, neutralize free radicals, and fight visible signs of aging.

Always be ready even while on the go with this lip balm. It even has SPF15 to make sure your lips are protected from sun damage.

No.4

100% All Natural Lip Balm With Cocoa Butter Melts on Your Lips

This lip balm uses natural ingredients and does not include any harsh chemicals. Cocoa butter’s melting point is around the same as a person’s body temperature, so it melts and absorbs into the skin easily, with no need for unnecessary rubbing.

Many users have praised this lip balm because of its moisturizing power. It is great for dry, cracked lips and for those who just want a wash of color on their lips and a little bit of moisture. Reviews love that the lip balm also gave a subtle cooling sensation. They also love the colors, as they are great for various skin tones, from fair to morena.

No.5

AvèneCold Cream Lip Balm

From ₱550

Nourishing Hyperallergenic Lip Balm for Dry Lips

This lip balm is formulated with good-for-you natural ingredients that nourish, heal, and protect your lips. Linoleic acid helps your skin retain its moisture, shea butter moisturizes, and vitamin E and F protect your skin from external aggressors. No.6

Tinted Lip Balm Free of Parabens, Phthalates, and Petrolatum

With six lovely shades to choose from, it’s kind of hard to choose. That’s why it’s great that all six are formulated the same with all-natural ingredients that go on smooth and leave your lips soft. What’s more, it doesn’t contain any harsh ingredients, so those with sensitive skin can try this too!

This tinted lip balm from Burt's Bees gives your lips a subtle hint of natural color while providing moisture that can last up to 8 hours! We all know that the Burt's Bees brand has a great reputation for its lip balms, and this one does not fail to meet expectations!

No.7

Carmex Click Stick Lip Balm

From ₱174

Soothe, Heal, and Protect Your Lips With This Bestseller

Carmex has been well-loved by a lot of its users, for a good reason. It has sold more than 3 thousand pieces on Shopee alone! Grab yours now before stocks dwindle! One of the reasons why people love it is because it applies easily and is lightweight

It provides long-lasting moisturization with lanolin and cocoa butter. However, it does use camphor and menthol, so we don’t recommend it for those who dislike tingling sensations. The upside, though? It has SPF 15 - enough sun protection for moderately sunny days.

No.8

More Than Just a Flush of Color

Show your lips some love with the perfect in-between product. We would describe this product as the middle ground between a lip balm and a lipstick. It provides your lips with all the moisture that it needs, while also being intensely pigmented.

It has skin-caring and loving ingredients that include kahai oil, squalane, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C that effectively eliminates dryness and chapping, leaving the lips soft and supple. On top of all these nourishing ingredients, it can make your lips pop with color.

This lip balm for Happy Skin comes in 6 shadesーand you can's go wrong with any of the shades, as they were meticulously created to make sure they will suit Filipino skin!

It claims to instantly moisturize your lips with just one swipe

These lip "treats" apply just like a normal lip balm but has a cushiony smooth formula and melts on your lips like butter. They are free from any harmful chemicals and are also cruelty-free. However, they do not come with added SPF.

No.10

The Solution to Extreme Dryness and Chapping

If your lips always seem to be dry, you have to get your hands on one of these. First of all, if your lips are always dry, it might be a sign of dehydration, so make sure to always drink enough water. If the dryness persists, this lip balm can help your lips stay hydrated throughout the day and prevent further damage.

This lip balm does not have SPF in its ingredients list. However, it contains carrot seed oil, a natural sunscreen that can protect your lips from the harsh rays of the sun. The reviews for this product are mostly positive, but some buyers did mention that the size is a tad small

Expert's Comment About the Top 10 Products

Dr. Mara Huber's Comment

The skin on the lips is different from the rest of the body, requiring some site-specific skin care measures for this specialized area:

  • The skin on the lips is thinner than the rest of the body. While the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum) is generally made of 15 – 16 layers of skin cells, the skin on the lips only has 3 – 4 layers.
  • The lips do not have sebaceous (oil) glands. These glands keep your skin moisturized, and that's why the lips can easily become dry and chapped. The skin on your lips also does not have hair follicles and has very little melanin.
  • The abovementioned characteristics make the lips particularly susceptible to environmental stresses, like the wind, changes in weather, and sun damage.

Limit Lip Balm Application to 5 Times a Day

Limit Lip Balm Application to 5 Times a Day
Your lips already go through a lot in one day - makeup, conversations, lunches - you don’t want to increase the stress it goes through by over-applying lip balm. As much as possible, limit your application to 5 times a day.

If you feel like your lips are too dry despite applying lip balm religiously, it could be that your lips have been damaged due to over-application. Try lessening your application and see if your lips’ condition improves.

Dr. Mara Huber
Dermatologist
Dr. Mara Huber's Comment

Some lip balms, if not effective enough in keeping the lips hydrated, can lead to a vicious cycle of constantly needing to use them and applying them on the lips, often followed by lip-licking or smacking, which just continues the cycle of chapping.

If you feel the need to reapply every hour, that's probably not good. This is why it’s important to use the right type of lip balm that actually does the job. If your lips are very dry and cracked, try a thick ointment such as petroleum jelly.

What Else Can You Do to Prevent Lips From Chapping?

Here are some of Dr. Mara's tips to prevent chapped lips:

  • Make sure you apply non-irritating lip products – whether lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss, or other. Stop using products that cause burning, stinging, or tingling.
  • Use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher during the day.
  • Apply a thick layer of lip balm before going to sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps chapped lips (which is dry lips, after all).
  • Avoid licking, biting, and picking at your lips. Licking your lips can make chapping worse because as saliva evaporates, your lips become drier.
  • Consider using a humidifier in your bedroom, especially if you breathe through your mouth at night.

What Else Can Cause Dry Lips?

While environmental factors are largely responsible for chapped lips, some health conditions can also contribute. See a dermatologist if chapped lips persist despite supportive measures.

  • Allergies to certain ingredients/products (e.g. toothpaste, dental prosthetics, etc)
  • Skin conditions (e.g. eczema, yeast overgrowth)
  • Systemic medical conditions (e.g. thyroid disorder, irritable bowel disease, autoimmune disease, or nutritional disorders i.e. iron, vitamin B, and folic acid)
  • Certain medications

More Tips from Dr. Mara Huber

Some helpful tips regarding the use lipsticks and lip balms:

  • If matte formulas are too drying, you may opt for creamier formulations. Avoid long-wearing and plumping formulations if you usually experience chapped lips.
  • Look for lipsticks with added moisturizing ingredients (e.g. shea butter, cocoa butter, mineral oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, etc).
  • You can also use lip balm under lipstick to have a hydrating base underneath.
  • Shift to a tinted lip balm.
