How to Choose a Dandruff Shampoo – Buying Guide

Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Look for a moisturizing shampoo to treat your dry scalp and a refreshing one for an oily scalp.
  2. For stubborn dandruff, try medicated shampoos.
  3. Avoid shampoos that contain petroleum or alcohol-based ingredients.
  4. Watch out for “bad” silicones like dimethicone and cyclomethicone as they can cause build-up.

For more detailed information, read through our buying guide below.

① Look for a Moisturizing Shampoo to Treat Your Dry Scalp and a Refreshing One for an Oily Scalp

Look for a Moisturizing Shampoo to Treat Your Dry Scalp and a Refreshing One for an Oily Scalp
A dry scalp causes your body to produce more sebum than necessary, which is a cause of dandruff. If you have a dry scalp, look for moisturizing shampoos with ingredients such as glycerin, argan oil, marula oil, or coconut oil.

On the other hand, if your scalp produces excessive sebum, look for refreshing shampoos that contain lemongrass oil, tea tree oil, ylang-ylang oil, or basil oil. It might seem counterintuitive to put more oil on oily hair, but these oils regulate your scalp's sebum production and moisturize your hair in a healthy way. Just keep in mind not to apply so much!

Dr. Katrina H Luz's Comment

Dry hair and dry scalp are rather common. It's important to provide the hair and scalp with sufficient moisturization to minimize damage. Studies have shown hair oils penetrate the hair and reduce the amount of water absorbed in the hair, leading to less swelling.

Hair oils can also fill the gap between the cuticle cells and prevent the penetration of aggressive substances such as surfactants into the follicle. For oily scalp, make sure to shampoo your hair daily.

② For Stubborn Dandruff, Try Medicated Shampoos

For Stubborn Dandruff, Try Medicated Shampoos
All bodies are different, so it’s natural to think that not everything will work for everyone. If you find that gentle and moisturizing shampoos don't do the trick, then it’s time to try medicated shampoos.

The ingredients in medicated shampoos kill fungi or bacterial infections. Some examples of these ingredients include piroctone olamine salicylate, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, glycyrrhizic acid, pyrithione zinc, and ciclopirox. However, these ingredients are potent, so it's advisable to visit a dermatologist before using any of these.

At times, if dandruff is a bit stubborn, a medicated shampoo may be needed. Over-the-counter medicated shampoos typically contain zinc pyrithione. This heals the scalp by normalizing the epithelial keratinization and sebum production. Some studies have even shown it reduces yeast colonization on the scalp.

In the clinic, our usual go-to is a ketoconazole shampoo which is basically an anti-fungal shampoo. Best to check in with your dermatologist for this one!

③ Avoid Shampoos That Contain Petroleum or Alcohol-Based Ingredients

Avoid Shampoos That Contain Petroleum or Alcohol-Based Ingredients
Petroleum-based and alcohol-based ingredients are harsh cleaning agents that can irritate the hair and scalp. They can even cause redness and dandruff build-up. These ingredients are often listed as sulfuric acid or lauryl sulfate.

They can also end up drying the scalp, causing excess secretion of sebum or oil. If you have atopic dermatitis or a sensitive scalp, avoid shampoos formulated with alcohol. It can also get in the way of natural skin renewal, causing the build-up of dead skin cells and more dandruff.

Dr. Katrina H Luz's Comment

A lot of people, when they see that shampoos contain 'sulfates'...they run for the hills. But are sulfates all that bad? Sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS) are often incorporated into shampoos as they are good at removing oil from the scalp and hair. However, there are claims that excessively cleaned hair with SLS results in rough, dull hair

The thing is, shampoos that contain SLSs are typically formulated with other surfactants that help stabilize it, consequently, changing the way it reacts with the skin and hair, resulting in a mild product.

④ Watch Out for “Bad” Silicones Like Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone As They Can Cause Build-Up

Watch Out for “Bad” Silicones Like Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone As They Can Cause Build-Up
The shampoo you have been using to control your dandruff might not be a fit for you if it contains silicone. This ingredient is used to make hair silky and smooth. However, it can prevent moisturizing ingredients from penetrating into the scalp and hair follicles, causing dry scalp, itchiness, and build-up of flakes.

Although "heavier" silicones like dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, stearyl dimethicone, and cetyl dimethicone can cause build-up, not all silicones are bad! Water-soluble ones such as dimethicone copolyol, and PEG-8 dimethicone make for a better option as they are easier to work with, can be rinsed easily, and do not cause build-up.

Dr. Katrina H Luz's Comment
Why are silicones in shampoos? Silicones are typically used in shampoos in small concentrations particularly in 2-in-1 shampoos that clean and condition the hair at the same time. So the truth is that they actually serve a purpose.

Myth: Silicones are bad for your health.
Fact: Silicones are non-toxic to the body. In skincare and shampoos, silicones form a breathable layer on the skin. Studies have not shown silicones to have a negative impact on scalp health.
