Top 10 Best Motorcycle Helmets in the Philippines 2020 (Shoei, Arai, and More)

The motorcycle is one of the most popular modes of land transportation yet also considered the riskiest. In Metro Manila alone, as of February 2020, motorcycles garnered the highest number in terms of fatality due to vehicular accidents. This is why the Motorcycle Helmet Law of 2009 must be strictly observed.

Wearing a motorcycle helmet lessens the risk of head injury in case of road accidents and it also filters out dust or debris to get into the driver's eyes. Modern helmets have an aerodynamic design – a smooth surface for better air ventilation and less air friction. In this article, we provide you a buying guide and a list of recommended helmets as your options.

How to Choose a Motorcycle Helmet - Buying Guide

Motorcycle helmets must always ensure safety. They are more than just fashion accessories. Here are the things that you need to consider before purchasing a motorcycle helmet.

Look for a Valid Philippines Standard Mark (PS) and Import Commodity Clearance Sticker (ICC)

When buying a helmet, you must always check for the valid sticker (PS Mark or ICC sticker) to ensure its authenticity. All locally made helmets are required to have PS marks while imported helmets have ICC stickers before their release in the market. The quality of the product must meet the required government standards.

Each ICC sticker measures 1” x 1” and has a silver, holographic finish with the logo at the center. Also, each valid sticker has a unique identifier code to avoid counterfeits and has a VOID marking when peeled off.

The sticker is located at the lower back of the outer layer of the helmet. However, if buying online, send a direct message to the seller and verify just to be sure you get an original.

Check the Materials Used in the Motorcycle Helmets

There are many kinds of materials used in creating helmets. Here are the things to check in each part:

Outer Layer Material Such as Polycarbonate Ensures Durability

Outer Layer Material Such as Polycarbonate Ensures Durability

The outer shell serves as the protective layer of the helmet from a strong impact in case of accidents. Polycarbonate provides protection and is the most budget-friendly option. However, they can be quite uncomfortable to wear for those who are not used to wearing a helmet.

Carbon fiber is much durable and lighter than polycarbonate. It has an innate scratch-resistant feature that lengthens its lifespan so this is worth investing.

Kevlar helmets are very rare in the market. High-quality and high-price helmet types are usually a combination of it and carbon fiber. These helmets are usually used for the military since they are strong enough to resist an indirect gunshot. These headgear, however, are the most expensive and a little excessive for general use.

Inner Lining Serves as the Helmet’s Cushion while Padding Foam Serves as the Comfort Line

Inner Lining Serves as the Helmet’s Cushion while Padding Foam Serves as the Comfort Line

The inner lining is the middle layer of the helmet to protect the head from the outer shell. With resistance from natural impact or shock, Styrofoam is commonly used material for the inner lining. Even though styrofoam is a relatively good impact absorber, some people complain that they experience concussion when something hits the helmet while they are wearing it.

Koroyd is a newer type of inner lining used in manufacturing helmets. Although these helmets are still on its testing stage, manufacturers believe that these are better than the standard styrofoam. The internal structure protects the wearer from any injury caused by the impact. Made from a small tube, they reduce the impact of breaks on the rider.

The padding foam ensures that the driver is comfortable while wearing helmets as this layer directly touches the driver’s head. It also absorbs the moisture.

Visor Protects the Face from Sunlight and Foreign Objects

Visor Protects the Face from Sunlight and Foreign Objects

Transparent visors are the most common to see in helmets in the market. They provide clear vision and protection from dust or dirt but they grant no protection against the sunlight during daytime. You can, however, wear sunglasses underneath the visor, but this can lead to discomfort to the wearer.

Tinted visors are very useful during the daytime as they provide protection against sunlight. However, they are not advisable for use on a cloudy day and nighttime. Using these visors in dark areas can lead to accidents and injuries.

Anti-glare and mirror are purely for aesthetics and protect the rider from the intense lights. These are for closed circuit races - not for regular travels. The best type of visors are the dual-tint ones because they shift to either transparent or tinted screen, whichever is needed.

Decide on the Appropriate Type of Helmet

There are many types of helmets for different purposes. It is important to know which one you need. Here are the most common types of helmets in the market.

Full Face Helmet for Highway Travels

Full Face Helmet for Highway Travels

Full face helmets are the standard helmet that can be used on the main road. They protect the entire head and commonly seen with transparent visors for the eye protection.

Open Face Helmet For Nearby Travels

These headgears are for riding scooters and bicycles only. They provide little protection for the head and they are not advisable to be used for long rides or when riding on big motorcycles.

Modular Helmet for Versatility

This is a combination of a full-face helmet of open face helmet. The visor can be flipped up and down to the forehead to provide protection to small debris, dust, smoke, or rain when needed.

Off-Road Helmet and Dual Sports Helmet for Competitions

These types of helmets are for in extreme sports and tournaments. They provide large visors to protect the rider from much larger debris like small stones. They are not used for road trips.

When you are still unsure what helmet to pick, consult other motorcycle companies and groups. Many motorcycle companies and sellers in the Philippines do not manufacture helmets so they can give you honest and objective recommendations.

Motorcycle enthusiasts and conducting group motorcycle road trip are the best people to ask the credibility of the brands. Motorcycle Riders Club of the Philippines is one of the most prominent groups of motorcycle enthusiasts. They are an organization that is registered to the Security and Exchange Commission.

A car wax protects your car’s finish. They maintain and prolong the paint's condition, provides shine to your vehicle, and gives an additional protective covering for your automotive. Car waxes guard the paint against superficial damage by creating a slippery surface for most particles and contaminants to slide off of. Besides filling in light scratches to smooth out the painted surface, car waxes also add a sacrificial layer to your topcoat. Hence, these products prolong the intervals between car washing, and, at best, staves off retouching and repainting the car.
